Making mistakes is how you learn.
Every generation must fight the same battles again and again and again. There is no final victory, and there is no final defeat, and so a little bit of history may help.
“What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?” If you cannot get rid of the people who govern you, you do not live in a democratic system.
That is why no one with power likes democracy and that is why every generation must struggle to win it and keep it – including you and me, here and now.

Guy on BBC News now was on the 2nd floor when the fire started and said people could barely move around the floor because of the smoke. Reckons nobody above the 4th floor would have survived based on what it looked like on the ground. :undecided:

I work in the construction industry (Architecture), and with the amount of old building stock in the North East alone, that has undergone similar refurb as this tower block had - I suspect there will be a lot of inquests/reviews starting today.

Certainly seems like the insulation in the external cladding system has contributed to the spread of fire, so quickly.

That message from the residents association makes it sound pretty likely you're right TK.

Well the fire doors ought to minimise the smoke and fire which can reach you until someone can safely get you. In theory.

Confirmed fatalities which is hardly surprising. Got an awful feeling it'll be quite high. :undecided:

I always assumed they would be a plan b for those that couldn't evacuate, really surprised.

Who's responsible for the building? The local council? It seems like the cheap cladding put on during a recent refurbishment was responsible for the fire spreading so fast.

The Grenfell Action Group predict that it won’t be long before the words of this blog come back to haunt the KCTMO management and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those in authority know how long and how appallingly our landlord has ignored their responsibility to ensure the heath and safety of their tenants and leaseholders. They can’t say that they haven’t been warned!

I think the 'stay put' policy is pretty common in large blocks like this. There should be multiple exit routes really, and it doesn't sound like there were enough in this instance.

That fire is absolutely terrifying, one of my worst nightmares. I've got awful memories of clearing my grandma's flat out after a fire (she was ok) and the smell of burning still terrifies me. The news of fatalities and serious injuries will only got worse, it's sickening.

Those pictures are awful, not seen anything like it since 9/11.  The middle of the night is the worst possible time it could happen, there could be hundreds of people in there.
