Very hard to find a good gyros anywhere in England imo. Think Acropolis is the best I've had actually when they're at Tynemouth market.
The ones I like around north London are run by Greek owners, so the food is true to it's Aegean roots.
I could live off Gyros, Moussaka, Dolmades, Tsatziki and Greek salad for the rest of my days.
Incidentally, when I returned to my home after leaving Athens at the end of '83, bearing in mind it was a small town in the lakes, I couldn't even get hold of red onions, peppers, greek yoghurt or hummus.
I think crispy pancakes were the big seller at the time...
