Am I dense or is it just easier to understand using the old fashioned scale? Like, Sun>Vega>Big f***er A>Massive f***er B.

It is when the alternative is being presented by an unbearable douche.

They got really bored really quick. Could not be arsed by the time they got to Rachel.

Rachel was obviously a good character but probably the one with the least 'things'.

I know we've covered it plenty of times but Friends at its best was wonderful, btw. Watched a couple episodes from Season 3 earlier today, absolutely top notch. I know a lot of people think the first couple of seasons are the best but, for me, there's barely an episode from seasons 3, 4, 5 and 6 that isn't great - probably peaking with Vegas. It obviously lost its way a bit but the finale was perfect.

Series 1 and 2 are mint. The One with the Butt and The One with the Blackout are peak.

I really don't get that. It's a lot more slapstick back then. Like when the cat jumps on his shoulder and he's trying to fling it off... it got a lot smarter.

I've not seen them for probably over a decade, but the earlier series felt a lot sharper for me. A bit cleverer and original in the humour. It was quite stupid, I suppose. Started to get more generic around series 3/4 I seem to remember though. Until it turned in to the vomit inducing laughter track soap opera it ended as.

That ep where they're all trying to get ready for Ross's thing is the peak of Friends IMO.  Just looked it up and that's series 3 ep 2.  Perfect ep.

First series is canny but they really hit their stride in 2-4.  I've seen them that many times it's difficult to take a step back and judge it properly but those series' are clearly a level above what came before or after it.

Series 5 onwards there is some gold there, some of the best moments in the show but it definitely starts getting worse.  The characters become exaggerated and 2 dimensional, a lot of the jokes are weak and stupid selfish w***** Chandler is in a happy relationship and not funny anymore.

I don't actually watch it anymore as I've seen them too much and it's a bit ruined but it used to be my go-to show to get in a happy-ish mood.

Whenever I rewatch Seinfeld or Friends I find myself most drawn to the earlier episodes. I think it's the life-cycle of sitcoms: after a couple of seasons shows find their rhythm, they understand the world they've created, characters become more integrated into their various plots and they find their voice and become more fully developed. But after that things can quickly become a little bit glib and repetitive: characters aren't developing anymore and they're not finding new laughs but instead relying on old ones.

By contrast I think the earlier episodes where characters are still finding their feet often feel a little bit more experimental and more natural. Seinfeld for instance stayed smart but became more self-referential after the first couple of seasons, whereas before it had carried a wider array of cultural references, and then in the later seasons it changed things up by becoming a bit more slapstick. I still think Friends holds up really well throughout, it's always watchable, but I always think that the two-part beach episode closing season three and starting season four marks a bit of a shift.
