That first half was no fun at all, wind plus sun plus 100 yard goalkeeper kicks plus enormous centre forward.

Aye, that sums it up nicely like.

Was like some WWII Dog Fight bullshit the way the ball would suddenly appear out of the sun diving into your face.

They're a decent team tbh. Usually always up there near the top of the table.

We won the 2nd half!

Sadly, they beat us within 10 minutes of the first half.

Forgot to mention this yesterday but I was curious.

On the weekends Newcastle are at home and we don't have one of these games planned, how interested would folk be in some 5/6 aside at Power League?

On a chilly, windy December morning, Kaisayr (Ayr United supporters) arrived at Blakelaw Park to take on NOFC (Newcastle United supporters) in the final Round One fixture of the 2011/12 IFA Cup.

A fixture that had seen plenty of hand-wringing in Runcorn when the draw was first made, eventually saw the Ayr supporters jump at the chance for a weekend 'in the toon' and a chance to meet another IFA team. Similarly, after last year's abysmal initiation to the IFA Cup (a drubbing in Motherwell, on a very cold, very windy day - although some players would later describe the day as 'magical'..!), the Newcastle supporters were keen to see if the chance to play 'at home' would help against the Scottish raiders.

With the regular NOFC keeper unavailable this season, the home side were dealt a blow when the original back-up was unavailable to play, followed by a late withdrawal of the back-up's back-up. Instead, the very first NOFC keeper (Nick) was ready to don his gloves for the cause as somewhat bleary-eyed squad of players gathered together for the first time in a couple of months.

A minute's silence in respect of Gary Speed was observed by all players. Thanks to the Ayr lads for letting us show our appreciation for a great servant of Newcastle United.

Despite having paid the Albatross Hostel 'management' a substantial amount (two Greggs pasties and a bottle of dog) to make as much noise as possible outside the Kaisayr team's room, it was the away side who started the game brighter.

A combination of no warm-up, unfamiliar faces (the Ginger Pirlo debutising at left-back) and a winter sun that seemed to be sitting two yards above the Ayr cross-bar, seemed to be causing the most difficulty for the home side. Ayr forced a couple of corners and had several clear headers that failed to trouble the home side before NOFC had even managed to make it out of their own half. Eventually, a sloppy piece of play by the Kaisayr right-back saw Kev Moore break free into the Ayr half, but as the covering defender eventually made it across 25-yards out, NOFC's leading goalscorer elected to shoot on his weaker foot instead of finding his unmarked team-mate on the other side of the defender..!

That half-chance gone, NOFC went back on the defensive...or at least what was supposed to resemble a defensive stand, mis-communication was the main point of the day, with club legend Colin Rance having something of a nightmare at the heart of defence. A hopeful Ayr through-ball wasn't cut out and the striker nipped in to put the away side in the lead.

At 0-1 down halfway through the first half, NOFC made a few changes to ensure everyone had a run out, Bahrainian Omar making his debut for the club after travelling thousands of miles to Newcastle just for this very experience (although he justifies this to his parents by claiming to be studying at the local university..!). A slight formation shift ensued, as NOFC tried to put the Ayr team under some sort of pressure, with some success, a couple of half-chances fell to the strikers but nothing really troubled the away keeper.

Instead, NOFC rewarded the travelling Scots with a comedic performance to rival anything Gary or Stephen Caldwell have produced for club and country, a corner was missed by THREE defenders (it bounced three times over their heads) but not by the Ayr player. 2-0 down and surely the interval was upon us? Nay, ACT I was swiftly followed by ACT II (the NOFC right back overlapping his winger and no-one covering the massive gap behind him), ACT III (another corner not dealt with) and ACT IV (a headed backpass that was in no-man's land and the diminutive Ayr striker nipped in for his second goal of the game).

Interspersed with all of the goals, a great display of sportsmanship/pity by the Ayr lads as a (possibly unintentional?) back-pass was picked up by our keeper and the referee awarded an indirect free-kick, at three or four goals up, Ayr kindly kicked the ball back to our keeper rather than mess about with a training ground set-piece..!

Thankfully, the referee showed mercy and blew for half-time. With the glare of the sun now behind our keeper, it was a chance for NOFC to get some pride back from the tie. A switch at half-time put Colin in goal, while Nick returned to his more familiar striker's role. Stu came on for Chris at right-back, in an attempt to shore up that side of the pitch, while Duffy dropped back alongside regular partner Jack in defence.

The half-time team talk simply consisted of "forget about the score, lets win this half" and the NOFC lads did a great job of doing this. Granted, the Ayr lads had made changes of their own at half-time and no doubt had their foot half off the pedal, but we were a lot sharper and more incisive going forward. Four of five decent chances had been squandered before a quick throw-in found Kev Moore in half a yard of space - as if any invitation was ever needed, Moore fired towards goal and saw his effort deflect off the defender to wrong-foot the keeper.

Buoyed by the goal, the home side tried again to push forward, a through ball to Nick Kane saw him felled by the defender/trip over his own feet (eerily similar to Demba Ba/David Luis in the later game), the ref awarded the penalty and the player stayed on the pitch. Kev Moore stepped up and smashed home his second, suddenly there was a note of concern in some of the Ayr voices.

Lo and behold, the comeback was right back on when a Kev Moore shot was dragged so horribly wide that it turned into an amazing reverse pass for the onrushing Omar on the edge of the area, he took one touch, steadied himself before smashing a neat finish into the top corner of the near post. Tears of pride and jubilation began to stream down his face as he thought of all the thousands of miles he had traveled to be here, representing the team he loved, all those hours toiling under the sun in Bahrain...

...then the referee informed him that he'd given a free-kick for off-side.

Just like that, the flicker of hope that we could have pulled off the incredible became very, very faint. It was shortly extinguished as NOFC once again failed to clear a corner and an easy header was professionally dispatched to seal the win.

Sadly for the Redditch United lads, there will be no early-2012 trip to 'Geordie Shore'; no slappers gagging for a mouthful of their saveloy dip in the Bigg Market; no hen parties necking blue WKDs for the young West Midlanders to crack onto; instead, they face a long trek into the frozen wasteland of Ayrshire for their second round match. However, they will get to meet one of the best IFA teams we've ever come across and who will no doubt be able to take them all for a great night out - our only regret from the weekend is that we didn't spend more time with the Ayr lads on the Saturday night - next time, next time...

Harsh on the defence if you ask me. Not a mention of the midfield/forwards constantly giving the ball away and putting the back four under pressure.

And no mention of the three saves I made in the second half either.

that back pass certainly wasnt intentional, i was gonna take another touch and simpson it up the pitch and he picked it up off my toes  :D

Colin's got a point, you lot weren't doing us any favours but then again we didn't cover ourselves in glory. Mistakes were made all over the pitch but only the defensive ones were highlighted, that's football for you though.

That's a good write up though Stu, i do wonder how you manage to remember so much from every game.

They're a very well drilled side who look to pass it and play some really tidy stuff. Was impressed with the bald guy in midfield and the winger in particular.

Anyway onto the next game.
