The Pointless/Interesting Knowledge Thread
« on: Tuesday 23 November 2010, 03:23:35 pm »
I thought it would be a nice idea to have a thread on the little known or interesting things in life and from history. I love knowing daft little things about why certain things came to be, and work in certain ways. It would be interesting to know yours.

Examples:

Archaeologists know if a skeleton was a monk by their worn-down knees.

The Gatling Gun came about through the inventor trying to find an automatic way to sow seeds.

Staircases in castles run up clockwise so that when soldiers were retreating they could fight back freely with their right hand, whereas the opposition below would have a large central pillar in their way.

The Egyptians had automatic doors that used floor panels and water pressure to open the doors.

There are no Dutch Elms left in Britain.

Crab Sticks actually contain no crab. :)

More people die per year from coconuts falling on their heads, than Shark attacks.

I think that's quite a well-known one.

Lee Mack loves that stat, uses it all the time.

It takes more energy to eat a stick of celery than you actually gain from eating it.

101 Dalmatians and Peter Pan (Wendy) are the only two Disney cartoon features with both parents that are present and don't die throughout the movie.

The woman who murdered French philosopher Marat as he sat in his therapy bath (name: Charlotte Corday) was captured because a member of the French guard was able to grab her enormous breasts and detain her as she tried to escape.
