Aye, was going to say if it was a fixed term project job rather than a maternity I'd risk it personally. Is it still working in one of the schools or...?

I genuinely don't how much difference it being a fixed term project would have made tbh? :undecided:

Yeah, it's still in one of the schools. It's basically my current job, plus recruitment. I'll be on main campus now as well.

Always thought you gain more from a fixed term working on something specific rather than just covering for someone. Plus there's more tangibles to claim success over and the potential it'll overrun etc. Someone left our team to work on the MLK stuff, before I joined. Ironically now back doing a maternity on our team.

It's a tough one like.

I don't know how it works in non academic university roles, but I got a contract off the back of a year working maternity cover. It's a decent foot in the door.

Heady days on here when Bezos inevitably buys the OU, gobbles up the accreditations, sets up distance learning, and we're all screwed like.

I feel like I've caused offence, but it was just a s*** attempt at shoehorning a joke. Sorry.

This may have been posted previously but I found it very interesting: https://strikemag.org/bullshit-jobs/

I suppose strictly speaking all we really need are farmers and medical people, maybe a few of us with enough skill to build huts.

Orwell said the same thing about the palliatives like football pools, fish and chips etc on the working classes, keeping them occupied so as not to rebel against the management layer. I guess that is true.

But then again, the logic of bullshit jobs might well extend to make almost any job we have now meaningless. It might be correct, but we'd need a hell of a reorganisation of society to fix it. I guess AI might be coming along to do almost all jobs soon anyway, then we'll have a real problem to solve.

Well, I've handed my notice in with my last day being exactly before the start of the busiest 2 weeks of our year. Let's see if they come back with something to negotiate because I'd really rather not leave the rest of my team in that position, like.

Yeah, always mixed feelings if you like the team but you want to leave.

I'm out of my current contract on Wednesday, such a relief. Learned my lesson about going to work places you suspect are going to be s***, and also about how long to put up with it. Basically done nothing for almost a year, which isn't great.

Still, quick holiday then onto something (hopefully) much better.
