Rome was a fantastic one.
Not one of the cool kids, and really insecure about it.

Big Little Lies is quite good too.
Making mistakes is how you learn.
Every generation must fight the same battles again and again and again. There is no final victory, and there is no final defeat, and so a little bit of history may help.
“What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?” If you cannot get rid of the people who govern you, you do not live in a democratic system.
That is why no one with power likes democracy and that is why every generation must struggle to win it and keep it – including you and me, here and now.

  Cheers for the recommendations, but Rome is about 15 years old.  Looking for recent stuff I may have missed.  Think I'll try Bluf's suggestion, if only because it's set in Monterey and I was there last week.

Of recent stuff:

Barry, True Detective, Westworld, Silicon Valley, Sharp Objects, Vice Principals and (not really new, but still) Eastbound & Down.

Some you'll no doubt have seen already I guess, but you wanted recommendations.

Just started watching fleabag. Cant be having this posh funny, commentating on everything and making faces to the camera after lines thing.

I thought it was OK, but I can't shake the feeling that she got the gig because 'daddy knows the DG'. or 'Mommy went to Winchester with the DG's wife'
or something like that...

Back to 1951.

Anyone watching the new season of Gomorrah? I'm up to ep6. Still loving it.

need to get on it, had a look the other day but couldn't find it via my usual sources :/
So raise your fists and march around
Dont dare take what you need
I'll jail and bury those committed
And smother the rest in greed
Crawl with me into tomorrow
Or i'll drag you to your grave
I'm deep inside your children
They'll betray you in my name

Back to 1951.

From the people who brought you 'Only Connect', 'Catchball', and 'How long does it take?'. A brand new comedic look at the foibles of anal sex.

To be fair, she wrote it, so you're both wrong there.

And followed it up with Killing Eve, which won everything and got her a gig writing on the next Bond movie.  She's outrageously talented.

To be fair, they're all produced by the BBC, and I said "From the people", not "from the person". So there.

Credit where it's due, mind. Killing Eve is canny. I wouldn't say that defines her as outrageously talented, though. Bond is a pile of formulaic crap.

I'm also willing to bet that she got the Bond gig on the back of 'Killing Eve' and not because James fancies a bit of bum-sex.

she's been brought in to sort out the script for the next bond film rather than write it from scratch

short story is she appears to be talented

Hundreds of people write plays, it's getting a BBC commission that's the hard part.
It's more likely to be a 'who you know' if the Commissioning editor went to the same private/separatist school as your wealthy parents, no?

PBS Frontline doc "Documenting Hate" about the re-awakening of white supremacist groups.

Scariest thing I've watched in years.
