I'm on my 83rd day of Duolingo Swedish. It's fun learning a language that is familiar in some ways and completely mad in others.

I think it's been spying on me though because it taught me to say "I have several ties" ("Jag har flera slipsar") and I have been going through a tie phase.

Unfortunately there’s no magic bullet. However, you already live in Spain, which is an advantage. You’ll be immersed in the language, which makes it infinitely easier to learn than if you were trying to learn in the UK.

Adding Spanish closed captioning to English-language TV and film helps make connections between the two languages. Watching Spanish-language shows with Spanish subtitles, even if you don’t have a clue what’s happening, helps you to figure out what something sounds like irl. Likewise, listen to the news, radio. Pick up a copy of El Mundo, as the language used in newsprint tends to be less “flowery” and more to the point.

Grammar wise, try to learn the major tenses and the rules around conjugating verbs. Grammatically, and certainly phonetically, Spanish is a simpler language than English, imo, at least in terms of it making logical sense. Once you figure out the rules, you’ve got a lot of the language unlocked.

Ultimately learning any language comes down to commitment. You gotta be willing to sound like an idiot, take risks with the language. It feels awkward but people get that you’re learning and appreciate the effort. Use Spanish even in environments where you can probably get away with speaking English. Make friends, go on dates, go to events, etc. It can be exhausting but if you’re dedicated to learning, it’ll eventually come together.

I can say what my name is and ask what someone elses name is.

Personally just stick with "¿Habla usted inglés?".

Don't do online lessons or tapes, you're in Spain.  Join a class.  You'll get to meet other people in the same situation and actually practise using it.

Ah, man. Just listened to a prog about a Polish post-WW2 massacre and obvs there were loads of Poles speaking, so I remembered some old bloke coming up to me at the bus stop years ago on his way to the White Eagle club brandishing a letter from his brother. It made no sense to me, lots of szcz stuff, but he loved it. Checked with the mrs, cos she was there, and that really happened. He said it sounded like his bro, he might have been being kind. I'll take it.
