5th Lockwood Cup - weekend of 12th/13th October 2019
« on: Sunday 1 September 2019, 12:01:44 pm »
Hi all,

For those who don't know, this summer marked the fifth year since the forum very sadly lost one of its best and most long-standing members in Cajun. Since his passing, every October we have held what is known as the 'Lockwood Cup' - a kickabout between forum members followed by a raising of glasses, all to the memory of Jon. Everyone who has taken part in the past, I'm sure, would testify that they've always been fantastic occasions with great people.

This year, the suggested date is the weekend of the 12th/13th of October. The likely venue is the Powerleague in Gateshead (Dunston Pits). There's a group who have essentially become 'regulars', but we'd hoped that, with it being something of an anniversary, others may like to come along.

You don't have to be dead fit, you don't have to be any good at football, it's altogether casual and more about the gathering in Jon's name. Typically it's a 7-a-side match; however, if there's a decent appetite and more people fancy it, we can easily take a look at the format and tweak it as necessary.

*NB, just by the by, the traditional forum Spring match is 'Reds v Blues'; the October game is the Lockwood Cup.

As a relatively newbie to these meet-ups for the Lockwood Cup I cant stress enough to anyone thinking of joining up to play or even just to come along, to do so. It’s free to anyone. I was like that once thinking should I or should I not and I remember Yorkie the first time I played - who by the way, and I don’t mind saying it, is f***ing lush (they all are) - asking me what took me so long and to be honest I never wanted to meet anyone off here in person, that and a few of my own inner issues of anxiety I’d use as excuses to keep my arm down.

But I knew I’d like it as I love playing football and when we lost Jon, who I never met personally like others have, but who I had some kind of relationship with via PMs over the years and of course as fellow main site writers and forum admins, I knew the only way I could say thanks and show my appreciation was to play in his cup, the Lockwood Cup.

My thanks and appreciation of Jon being one of the first members to put his hand up to offer his help with N.O and when I reached out to him and others years and years ago, selfishly at first to beg him not go and join Toontastic because N.O could not lose its best members like Jon at any cost, as long as Jon and others like him were posting, there would always be a forum. We’d be better by having someone like Jon, no great in fact, greater than any other forum. And do you know what, I’ve been proved right!

I initially bribed him with moderator and admin offers and he was OK I’ll help out as best as I can, but in all of that he was honest and said he would still be posting on Toontastic and during some of the more bitter times between the two forums he along with others were valuable to me and helped show me the the most the hilarity of it all and indeed how sad I was taking things so personally and being on the defensive all the time.

But he understood why and never made me feel like I was a prick (which I was or had been) and I will never ever forgot how he would stick up for this place. I will never forget him offering to write for the main site either which he did, or helping out with admin, I don’t think he really wanted to, but he wanted to help and when asked, he didn’t want to just say no or f*** off, that’s not Jon.

Those who only know of Jon’s memory or his name through the Lockwood Cup, he goes way back to the start of this whole place and was a huge positive contributor, a popular poster and underrated as a football section poster in terms of his knowledge and astute thoughts as well.

Others obviously got to meet him and become friends with him in real life and Jon meant more to those people than being just some forum member and me playing in a game created in his honour, means a lot to me because this place means a lot to me, it means a lot to all of us and it meant a lot to Jon who may not post much these days, but as long as he’s a member, there will always be an N.O.

Sorry for the long post and I don’t want to make it personal, but I couldn’t help it.

Anyway, get yourself a long, everyone is great and I’d be happy to sit this out or be on standby as a sub if someone who hasn’t played before wants to come along and play. You don’t have to be like Messi or super fit, the standard is good, but fitness and ability doesn’t come into it, it’s all about getting together and having a kick about for a bit of fun, a bit of a laugh, a bit of banter and for Jon.

Reds better win this again like!

Thanks, I didn’t want to make it personal or emotional, but I couldn’t help it. I remember messaging Jon ages ago when the forum split kicked off again practically begging him not to leave for Toontastic and he was like f***ing hell, you must be desperate, what are you paying

He once messaged me to ask if I knew any hot Geordie slags desperate enough to go with him when he was coming to Newcastle, with Jon you couldn’t be offended and I always got the impression he was unaware how self deprecating he come across which was endearing.

I’m sure he didn’t need any desperate slags the handsome f***er :D

What I love about this place and those I’ve met from here is how down to earth, friendly and thoroughly normal everyone is and it says a lot about Jon how far and wide people come to play in these games and don’t just turn up and that’s it, people make a weekend of it and next time I’m definitely coming out afterwards for drinks or whatever.

I think the first time I met you Yorkie was picking you up from the Central, I was canny nervous like and helped by Chris being more nervous “they’re your mates, you know them from the internet”

I think my first encounter with LFEE and Jill was a big hug from them which really helped ease any nerves, my next encounter with LFEE though was a vicious assault on my foot, resulting in a broken metatarsal. It was an accident really and anyone who knows me knows if someone is going to get hurt it’s me.

Everyone I’ve met thus far went out of their way to make me feel welcome, yourself, LFEE and Jill of course in particular and Neesy who I’ve met just once and who was a star for us in goal one time.

I even got to meet Lucas’ adorable bairns (his dog’s)  :smitten: and Stifler is as sincere in terms of his soft animated persona as his personality on here is and don’t take that the wrong way Stiffy, to me that means you’re a nice lad and genuine as they come. Although if anyone has watched Lock Stock, where Ashley is concerned Stifler is Soap (scene with the knives) My partner in defence though the last time, we were like a brick wall together. Maldini and Baresi :D

I of course played like Messi in my first game, 4 goals and too quick for the old timers at the back. I soon returned to my true form though after that for the following games, from Messi to Messed up :D

Looking forward to this one more than any other, hopefully I’ll have had a month off the tabs and be more fitter and help lead us reds to another victory.

Sorry to hear about the passing of a forum member on here, good on you lot for doing something in his memory. Nice words from HTT.

For a while, on and off, I've been trying to sort out some football but get the usual drop outs so put me down as being interested for this. However, I'm currently sporting some cracked ribs and I'm off on my jollies at the start of October but if I get through all that in decent shape I'll come along.

Can also vouch for this. Went to my first one last year bricking it but everyone is proper canny and you have a great laugh playing and over a few pints afterwards in town. Spoke to @Danh1 a few weeks ago and we're both up for a bit of a night out afterwards if others are up for it. It's also an excuse for me to stay in town until the Sunday morning as trains for me are s**** on the Saturday night. Also rather not try and get a train back p*ssed. End up in Wick or somewhere.
But...6 in a row. But...Calciopoli.

Can't believe we're planning for October already. Gone by really quickly.

The last one at Coach Lane IIRC. Been a while. Might have to graft but if not, should be able to get along.

I needlessly threw that England thing out there, by the by. I won't be in Toon on the Friday, personally.

Was hoping we might do a meal on the Saturday evening? It being an international break means there's no football-watching activity in the hours following our game, which is a pity.

Last year I went to my first game. Was good putting names to faces. I’m not good by any means, and I was run ragged within 10 minutes. I enjoyed it though.

I went again earlier this year, I stuck to a more rigid position and had an idea of how others liked play, so was able to do a bit better. A small break for HT, and some nice drops of rain at the end helped a bit to keep people fresh.

Trust me, if I with my fitness and ability can enjoy it, then so can anyone else, even if it means subs are used.
