Ballad of Buster Scruggs - Cohen Brothers

Another somewhat slight piece of whimsy from the Cohens rather in the vein of fluff like Hail Caesar and Burn After Reading, it's a compendium of Wild West tales. Some of which are amusing, some are diverting and some slightly less than interesting. Overall I think it's time for them to make a decent film again, high time. I can appreciate the archness, the smirk, the little bits of cleverness but none of this makes a great film in my humble opinion.

Looking back it might be No country that was the last good film, before that Fargo. For such a talented pair they have a decidedly mixed back catalog but I usually look forward to a new piece from them (I didn't see Inside..., it looked to be not something I would enjoy)

Big fan of the CB’s. Agree with your thoughts on Buster. However Inside LD is one of their best.

I should check it out then.

  What are you talking about man?  The Big Lebowski wasn't a good film?  The Man Who Wasn't There? O Brother Where Art Thou?  Have a word.

Conceded but the fact that you have to go back to 2001 kind of proves my point in terms of it being high time for a decent film from them.

Since 2001 they've done No Country for Old Men, True Grit, Inside Llewyn Davis, A Serious Man.

I don't agree that A Serious Man or True Grit are good films, certainly not when we've seen what they can achieve, average at best. I haven't seen Inside... and in my previous post I commended No Country.

Black Panther. Generic comic book fare, adult bedtime story, hilarious CGI...surprisingly poor, thought the hype would be real like Get Out but apparently not for me. Has Forest Whittaker stopped pretending to act? He's been cack since Ghost Dog.

As for Coen Bros, most of their films aren't masterpieces but very few directors pump them out consistently anyways; especially at their rate of creating. A lot of 6-7/10 comical farces with intermingling narratives, most are pleasant at least, only really disliked A Serious Man and Burn After Reading.

Watched the first few hours of Green Mile but kinda need to go to bed. Great film, though. Percy is horrible.

Boring.

Awk. It looks amazing from the trailer. Kinda like A Quiet Place.

There's a nice angry deconstruction of it somewhere, hang on:

Also, I watched Christmas Chronicles with the kids on Christmas Night. It was nice . Kurt Russell is ace.

No Elf, mind you. Or Muppet Christmas Carol.

Or Die Hard.

With the exception it was made prior to A Quiet Place, and is based on a book.

Mowgli.  That was great, and brutal at points.

Aye, that hit me, one of the brutal parts indeed.  I don't usually get that involved in films to care enough, but was taken aback, a bold move for a glorified kids movie.  I know they've said it wasn't aimed primarily at kids, but that's the target audience it'll end out with down the years.

Liked it better than the Disney version to be honest, not that I'm knocking that.  Thought that was well done too.

So raise your fists and march around
Dont dare take what you need
I'll jail and bury those committed
And smother the rest in greed
Crawl with me into tomorrow
Or i'll drag you to your grave
I'm deep inside your children
They'll betray you in my name

Sleep now in the fire

I was interested in that until I heard it wasn't part of the wider MCU.  Seems stupid, something to do with Sony trying to carve out their own little Spiderman universe because they still own the rights?  Sounds cynical as f***, no matter how good it ends up.

And all of that could be entirely wrong, I shall await @Kaizero.

Not seen it yet, been stuck in a glass case of emotion. By all accounts it's supposed to be very, very good.
