Dennis Wise tells me he's comfortable on the ball, happy to beat his man down the line or cutting inside and can cross off both feet.

Very impressive delivery with his left peg.

How Lazaar, how Lazaar, how Lazaar. Ohhh baby (oh baby), he's really pacy (he's really pacy). Everytime you look around, he's in your face!

Although in all seriousness it'll be great to have an attacking threat from left-back. If we play Lazaar and Yedlin at the same time, it would be one of those modern systems where - in possession - Hayden drops into a 3rd CB whilst they bomb forward. Maybe.

Another, albeit weaker, option:

So tell me what you want, what you really really want,
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna,
I really, really really wanna Achraf Lazaar.

Yep, if we get him to go with Yedlin we'd have two very pacey full backs who look good going forward, which would make a big difference when we come up against teams at home who are going to just sit back and defend. We really need another creative midfielder but it's good to see us addressing the other areas we're deficient in.

Ryder making noises about another winger too, in addition to Judge.

Shall we just build the biggest team ever? We've gone from having no competition for places to bulking up every position.

yeah could be a deciding factor, as i have no idea how big or quality wise any other team has. i know a few good players for the division but if they get injured how will their teams cope.

If he plays full back and Sissoko is going, I hope he gets to remain a number 7. I love fullbacks with attacking numbers, like Kolarov with 11. It's like an open admission of what they are there to do.

The "Palermo Best Moments, Skills, Assists & Goals" video has a Laurent Robert-level thunderbolt about 40 seconds in. I know folks are saying he's fast, but he looks balanced and composed with it.

Benítez really puts a lot of emphasis on fitness. So I guess that he's taken a look at how crazy the C'ship calendar is, and wants a big squad to cope with it.

If Krul and Moussa leave, which they will, we'll have gotten rid of 16 players. Crazy that we probably need to sign 2 or 3 more, too.

Whipping balls into the box from the left, and at pace, our forwards won't know what is happening.

Defensive side of his game looks canny also, though I'm aware that clips aren't made of errors. Wise seal of approval.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Newcastle have put €3.5m on the plate for Lazaar, but Palermo are sticking to their stance of not accepting less than €5m.

Not sure if reliable at all, but if so then just f***ing get it done one way or another asap Charnley. Can't afford to waste time.

He was strongly linked with West Ham about a week ago. In fact searches tell me Crystal Palace, West Ham and Southampton were all chasing the £2.5m rated defender earlier this month.
Italian sources claimed he'd even agreed personal terms with West Ham.

4th most crosses in all of Serie A last season, 12th per 90 minutes among fullbacks in the Top 5 European leagues.  Certainly far beyond anything we currently offer offensively. He's really quick but prone to lapses in concentration defensively. Lots of deflections and interceptions, good reflexes. Get him in.

No, that defending is more a priority for full backs as you go down the leagues. Higher up full backs have to be more footballers.

Go onto Youtube, first clip of him smashing a shot into the top corner from about 40 yards out. :notbad:

He looks ridiculously good on YouTube man. Seems weird how he's been linked with so many big moves in recent years but we appear to have ended up the closest to getting him. Transfer fee seems like peanuts too.

Please happem. Looks impressive going by youtube. Imagine how much the dynamics of our team would change with him and Yedlin as fullbacks, even if we only look at the pace difference alone. Compared to what we have had lately

After a bit of Wise scouting, he looks more like a Hatem type winger than a full back to me. Seem to love taking people on and has the skill to do it, which isn't really what you think of when think of a full back.

Did you watch the 9 minute 37 second video with AlmarssadPro in the title?  Shows quite a bit of defending their as well.  Obviously its youtube so not going to show any shitness, but he does look quite tenacious in defence and importantly quick enough to get back when a team catches us on the break.  Also from the examples shown likes to win the ball then break out with it himself, rather than just lumping it to nowhere like Dummet.

Wish I hadn't watched that video now like because I'm going to be gutted if we don't get him

Looks like he could do a job on the left wing. Given our blatant lack of wingers and the fact we have two LBs who don't look like going anywhere, this signing could make plenty of sense. Has he ever played left wing before?

We don't really have 2 LBs who are good enough to play though, assume this is why Lazaar is coming in.

It'll make a massive difference to our build up play and ability to press imo. Sideways passing and lumping the ball forward is too frequent and I foresee out possession looking very favourable.

Having two fullbacks bombing forward will obviously make the team better. Just to name one or two i can imagine Shelvey doing better with some good forward passes, as well as Ritchie getting more space.

I agree. What I mean is, we're desperately short on the wings and may need people to fill in. This lad improves the LB position and could possibly move up to the wing if needs must. Going off his highlights he loves to get forward and take people on, even in his own half.

Gives us great options at back with him and Yedlin if both can bomb on and be half competent at the back. Allows us to target teams weak areas if we can get another good winger and a Striker we should be sorted. Looks like him and Yedlin will at least give Shelvey something to aim for with Wingers tucking in occasionally.

There looks to be a plan at least :-)

There is a lot to like about this one, had a chance to watch him pretty extensively. His crossing is streets ahead of anything we've seen on the left side in a while. He takes a fair few corners, too. Can float them or strike them low with pace. One of the better players Palermo had in terms of intercepting and deflecting balls, too. Concentration lapses have been an issue for him.

He has played as a wingback a fair bit, also a little as a pure winger. Palermo has a couple of good fullbacks already so selling makes sense for them, too.

SportItalia and Gazzamercato both report a deal has been struck and the documents are being exchanged this afternoon.

Newcastle are due to pay €3.5m for the Morocco international left-back.

He’ll fly in to England this evening to sign a five-year contract.

There was a positive meeting today in Newcastle between his agent, Andrea Cattoli, and director of sport Lee Charnely.

Lazaar had also been on the radar of West Ham United.

We need it really, when you consider what our front 4 might be like at times. There is some pace there, but we could do with some genuine pace to add to it. The full backs being rapid is gonna be handy. I think we could do with a very quick AM/winger though.

Not to burst anyones bubble but you get more time and space on the ball in the Italian league generally and most the players are about 70 years old so bit easier to look very fast imo

I was bored so watched a couple of the vids. Looks very good on the ball but nowt of him defending. I know these days that isn't the be all and end all for a full back but it is a bit more at this level than the prem.

Palermo played a lot of 3-5-2 in the last couple of seasons with him as a wingback. Even tried some 5-3-2 and 5-4-1. Probably saw more action as a wingback than a fullback, to be honest. Got thumped by Roma 5-0, lost 4-0 each to Genoa and Juve playing 3 at the back.  Lazaar got HAULED OFF in the 37th minute v Lazio down 0-2 when they started him as a LM in a 4-4-1-1, he and the LB gave up a lot of joy down their flank. Palermo sacked and rehired their manager, Lazaar was in and out of the mix in differing roles throughout.

He seemed to be most effective in a 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1 last season, played as an orthodox LB for Morocco in a 4-4-1-1.

Also, if you know the song "How Bizarre" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2cMG33mWVY), it's perfect for him:

Our Lazaar
Our Lazaar
Our Lazaar
Ooh baby
He's making me crazy

They had something like 7 or 8 managers last season alone but Ballardini - the one I referred to - was sacked in January and rehired in April

On YT alone I am happy with this, I just hope he can live up to the hype portrayed in those videos. Even if players are naturally slower in that league, the way he makes up ground for some of those tackles is insane. Welcome aboard the Rafalution Lazaar!

Although in all seriousness it'll be great to have an attacking threat from left-back. If we play Lazaar and Yedlin at the same time, it would be one of those modern systems where - in possession - Hayden drops into a 3rd CB whilst they bomb forward. Maybe.

Haha. I don't get how this is still a thing mind I only said I thought we would do well to get our money back on wijnaldum and was proved wrong by a silly bid,  fair enough.

Also that Sissoko isn't worth 35m and 20m would be a good deal which is looking a fair comment. Don't think I have made many other comments about players values

You think we were a couple of defenders away from saving ourselves? ??? Maybe, but I doubt it. We went down because we'd been begging to go down for the last four years.

The scale of this rebuild goes so much further than the playing squad. But swapping a dozen out for a dozen in is a great start at shifting the culture.

We needed a left back, Rafa goes out and gets one, what is this tranfer policy, completely foreign to this club. The only area I think we are lacking now is left wing, if we pick up one of those before Wednesday, we'll have had a pretty darn good window in the end.

Makes sense. We've got better options at fullback than we have on both wings at the moment.

Looking forward to seeing what he and Lazaar can do.

Lazaar is definitely comfortable on the wing or at LB. I thubj we will bring at least one more winger in, hopefully two with at least being able to play as an creative AM.

Quote
Meanwhile, Achraf Lazaar is a left side, of Moroccan origin, trained in Italy and has played in Palermo in Serie A and can act even more well ahead on the left wing. Also it has a first class experience despite his youth, has just 24 years. It has a good shot with his left leg and a great ride in this band.

Rock on toons

Found one (which is far far better) that started with a sweet as f*** shot into the top corner and continued to show assists and goals. Finally! He looks like a handful. One of the clips he totally stands like Ronaldo. Read into that what you will :shifty:

His problem is probably the first few yards he can appear sluggish but over a longer distance he is rapid. There was occasion at home this season (Reading I think) where he was flying before winning the tackle.

For all his faults, his recovery/last ditch tackles are actually really good. Barely ever let's a winger get beyond him in a flat out foot race and times his interceptions very well.

I think it's more the defensive side of it but it could have been as Dinho and Conjo have just said. Rafa is a defensive minded manager first and foremost so that's probably why we haven't seen Lazaar and Yedlin at full back yet, not until he's sure of them both with his defensive structure and instructions.

Just my take on it like.

Fans of many clubs in the PL have had a pop at us over the years and those of Championship clubs have whenever possible this summer.

I agree on the average Twitter fan not being the best to take notice of but to see some fans giving him such abuse after 1 game is obsurd.

Guess it's just a difference of philosophies. Applying your method, in my mind, just delays the process. This isn't some 16 year old academy player, so we shouldn't spend 6+ months easing him into things to see if he is up to it.

He has a much higher skill ceiling than Dummett, so a couple of bad performances is worth it in my mind if he gets up to speed quicker for the sake of our long term results this season.

It showed yesterday that we can get results even if he doesn't play particularly well, so why not persist with him for a few more games even if his performance level is inconsistent/poor?

When the other option at LB is Paul Dummett, I completely agree that this lad should be a given a run of games to see if he settles down.

Because Newcastle United is a meritocracy not an old boys club and Dummett has been playing better than Lazaar? Dummett gets too much stick on here. Really frustrates me how much time we give to new signings on here while perpetually writing off our current XI. Within the last week I've seen posters on here suggest Diame is better than Sissoko, Ritchie is better than Townsend and now Lazaar should be starting ahead of Dummett after one game during which he was by all accounts awful against a second string Wolves side.

I'm not saying we should write him off but going off last wednesday's game he doesn't sound ready yet and he needs to earn his place.

He looks a winger playing full back when I've seen him play

Wouldn't mind seeing him on the other wing opposite Atsu at some point today then.

Like his attitude, even though he's barely played, there's no whinging going on, he's just biding his time and adapting to the game here. Still think he'll be a good signing, looking forward to seeing more from him.

Glad this guy improved significantly on what was (by all accounts) an absolute horror show in his first appearance. Thought he entered the team philosophy with no qualms at all and got forward well too. Real shame that effort that cracked the bar didn't drop in.

Plenty at fault for the goal, especially Sels and Hayden.  Lazaar was at fault for ball watching, though the ball rolls to the perfect position for Snodgrass to run onto it.

Not just saying it to go against the general grain but I thought he was really poor last night, improved a bit second half but I thought he was non existent defensively and seemed terrified to pass or dribble forward with the ball.

Started to look OK in advanced positions second half but overall looked poor, early days though and still probably getting used to english football, but certainly hope he improves upon the small amount we've seen so far.

Aye I thought he looked decent that night. Doesn't seem remotely likely that he'll usurp Dummett any time soon, but I'm strangely confident about him, based on very little. Another benefit, besides the obvious, to opening up a gap would mean the likes of Lazaar might get rotated-in a bit more frequently. Interested to see what he's like.

IMO, Dummet is underrated by some simply because he's come through our ranks. Some people seem to be labelling him and thinking of him as poor simply based on opinions of when he first broke into the side and was admittedly dodgy. Now, he's a very solid defensive left back and I'm more than happy with him to start for us in this league. Having a defensive winger ahead of him doesn't help the team though (e.g. Gouffran).

Dummett is poor, no idea why people think he is defensively solid, he is constantly caught out of position and he offers absolute nothing going forward, in fact he is a hindrance as it takes him an age to control the ball and then he hoofs it aimlessly forward or passes back to Clark using up precious time.

True he was poor against Wolves, he'll have to get used to English football so gets a bit of leeway from us for now surely. Although i would say Lazaar should be pushing a very poor Dummett from the team by now, but Rafa probably thinks he's not doing enough in training to deserve starting. That and Rafa is very cautious when introducing players to his system (Lazaar been here long enough though for that not to be a factor now imo).

Like most of us, I've seen little of him to judge but the fact that he can't get past Dummett who has been atrocious this pre-season says a lot about the guy. Rafa doesn't even want to look at the guy, look at the Wolfsburg game. Clark had to play the full 90 mins, Mbemba came on and played right back, Gamez had to go to left back and there wasn't another CB to replace Clark.

Really odd situation, surely Rafa sanctioned the deal and knew something about the player, but what he's seen in training obviously makes him think he's not cut out for the English game.

Got a decent look at him when he played in the Hull cup game.  He did some good stuff with the ball and looked pacey but also bottled a 50/50 on the halfway line so my guess is that Rafa has him in the "soft as s****" category.  Probably the right decision, our fans never have much patience with those types, Thauvin is a recent example.

Rafa doesn't tend to have much patience for players who seemingly struggle with instructions - I'd guess that's why Mbemba has slipped down the pecking order. In Lazaar's case it's a bit more surprising given in Italy it's always been 'the system is everything' but then maybe my preconceived ideas of Italian football stemmed from watching it on Channel 4 about 20 years ago are a bit out of date.

Either way, bye!

Palermo played 3-5-2, 4-3-1-2 (one of the 3 dropping in as a CB) or variations of this system when he was there. This means he was always played as a left midfielder or wing-back rather than a full back in the traditional sense.

In that context his signing never made sense. Not even like he could have played further forward, as the wide player in a 4-2-3-1 is a very different role too.

Either he was signed without proper scouting or we wrongly thought he could adapt to a new position.

Transfermarkt shows him having 50 games of playing time in Serie A over two seasons, the first with his club (featuring Dybala) comfortably mid-table. You would think the typical player from there would get playing time in the Championship.

Benitez will remember him because he scored a 40-yarder against Napoli in 14/15. The shot was hit centrally though and the keeper comically lost the bounce.

Would've liked to see this lad to be given a few games to see if he's up to it but clearly not rated by Rafa.

If our budget is what it appears to be then what Arsenal want for Gibbs is out of our reach for a LB. Can't say I'm that bothered about him as I don't think he has much hunger in him these days.

Who is our back up LB? If we are looking to shift him and Haidara.

Gamez

He has played RB every time I've seen him including pre-season at Hearts. Also fairly right footed it seemed.

None the less he would be the back up in that position. It's almost like we need to sign another left back. If only someone like Gibbs was available...

Mitchell Dijks would be a good cheap option given he is in his last year of his contract at Ajax. Giant strong left back at 6'4 got rave reviews on loan at Norwich last season. Apparently they wanted to keep him on but couldn't afford his wages to keep him on permanently had a fee agreement of just €3m.

Quote
Having failed to make an impression at Newcastle since arriving from Palermo in August 2016, attempts to kick-start the faltering career of Achraaf Lazaar back in Serie A have proved to be equally disastrous.

Moroccan-born but raised in Italy, the 26 year-old made the last of his ten United appearances in the League Cup defeat by Nottingham Forest back in August, before departing on loan to Benevento.

That was intended to be a season-long switch, but after playing just nine times for the side who have managed just a solitary win all season, a change of coach has seen Lazaar lose his place completely.

Reportedly in Spain for treatment on an injury before Christmas, he was then twice named as an unused substitute for league fixtures during January.

However the left-sided player was then omitted from the revised squad published following the closure of the transfer window - despite the club leaving four of the 25 available slots unoccupied.

The three clubs in a season rule means that Lazaar will now be idle until June, regardless of his contractual status (at present he's our player until 2021).

That also removes any faint hopes he may have retained of forcing his way back into the Morocco squad for this summer's World Cup Finals.

Its a bit of a depressing list to read.

I think back to my younger years when I often looked at the squad list and though so-and-so are the only players I'd like to keep if I was a manager with £xxxM (probably due to CM/FM ). There were always quite a few players I would like to keep. Today it is only 1 in Lascelles. The only others, if the imaginary budget does not allow for a full replacement, would be Dubravka and Shelvey.

Shelvey & Dubravka are equally as good and as important to us as Lascelles imo. I don't know a goalkeeper I would/we could replace Dubravka with, his game is complete and he seems like a good man too. I like Oblak for AM, but that's the level we're talking for someone better than our goalkeeper.

To say Diame isn't Premier League quality because he's only been class for us for half a season in this league but Muto is Premier League quality because you've seen him for about 90 minutes in the league is f***ing mental.  That's not even getting into the other people you've mention who have barely even played never mind dominated in their position for half a season.

Well, tbf, Muto and Schar it was a choice of leave them out or give them the benefit of the doubt.  If i'd left them out then instead of posts like yours there'd be reams of posts questioning why they're not PL standard

As for Diame, i'm just not convinced (yet).  Maybe the second half of last season was the real Diame or maybe it was just a purple patch and the real Diame is the useless oaf we had lumbering around for us previously.  It's an opinion at the end of the day, with the teams we've played so far it's probably too early to tell which Diame we'll get this season but if he continues like he's started I wouldn't be averse to Lascelles lamping him again.

Saying Diame is not PL standard because "he's only had half a decent season" is absolute bullshit. He's played an average of over 30 premiership games in in 8 out of the last 10 seasons. Relegated once (in the only season he played less than 25 games he actually played only 12 games, for a new club), and promoted to the premiership twice. He's got PL quality written all over hm.

He only started 4 league games before Christmas so would have been pretty fresh second half of the season. Think it’s perfectly reasonable to think he won’t last the season at a good level. He’s hardly started well.

It's barely been handful of games yet, and no one is saying he's an outstanding Premier league player, but he's definitely spent enough time in the top league to say he's a standard Premier player. If we sold, I think he'd find another Premier league club, albeit probably a lower level one. Not sure I'd say that for the majority of our squad so he's not our biggest problem.

Surely you judge whether a player is PL-quality by their performance, not how many PL games they’ve played.

In that case you'd be changing your opinion with every game.

Jack Colback played 179 premier league games. I don't think the number of appearances a player has made is a good metric to judge quality.

Colback is currently playing his second consecutive season in the championship. I didn't say it was about how many PL games a player has played.

Not convinced by Diame. He had a good 4 months but it’s out of keeping with his first year and a half and how he’s started this season.
That year and a half was also out of keeping with the rest of his career tbf. I reckon the safe answer is somewhere in the middle.

He wasn't exactly a main man at hull and they weren't that fussed about selling him. Kenedy, Ritchie, atsu and Joselu as our attack on Saturday. Cast offs and deemed disposable by Bournemouth, Watford and stoke. Says it all. Newcastle united signing cast offs from clubs not even half our size. Utterly pathetic

Don't understand why Rafa does this sometimes, for whatever reason just freezes players out. Obviously we don't know all the facts, but he's done it before with players and would be surprised if every single one was a disruptive influence?

If he just thinks they're crap it makes more sense. But if he was doing it based on that in training they'd barely have enough for a game of 5 aside.

I always assume it's some sort of communication thing. Knowing what Rafa is like with intricate, seemingly minor details & instructions for his players, maybe he knows he can trust Dummett such is the player he is, and second in line is Manquillo simply due to his ability to communicate with him in greater detail? I don't know, just guessing.

Saw Lazaar play for the reserves last year and even at that level he was shyte. Tried to be a fancy Dan on a couple of occasions to impress but was dispossessed both times. He would be murdered in the prem... yet another of a pile of shyte left back signings. I go back to the days of Alan Kennedy for the last real good one although Bez was decent in the Keegan team
