Title: All Things Rock
Post by: Lenny on Tuesday 6 August 2013, 09:19:02 PM
I know we have a general music thread already but I find it get's a bit watered down by all genres. I'm looking for something new to listen to, and there are probably a fair few posters on here that could recommend some good stuff.

So that being said, I thought a rock thread might be useful - what rock/indie/alternative/metal/whatever are you listening to, and what could you recommend to each other? Doesn't necessarily have to be new music either.

I'd never heard of Graveyard until someone mentioned them on here, so more of the same would be welcome.

My recommendation at the moment would be "The Temperance Movement", they have an EP out at the moment (it's on Spotify), and a new album coming out soon, I believe:

If you like Graveyard, give Witchcraft (also Swedish) a go.

Just gave that a listen, liked it - I'll check them out. Can certainly see a similarity to Graveyard in there.

i wasn't massively keen on the 3rd album like, not enough rock in it for me, but the first one is solid and worth a listen, third too really

you on spotify then lenny?  have to link me up to some rock playlists if you've got any...graveyard radio just broke my heart in the gym, started rocking out and working away then it rapidly descended into damien rice and country house by blur :dowie:

I don't really use Spotify all that much to be honest - I don't have a premium account. It seems you can do a lot more with it now though, the radio stuff wasn't there when I used it a lot. My username is markluk.

I only really listen to the obvious bands, generally (Foo's, QOTSA, Feeder, Led Zep mostly), so there isn't a great deal I can recommend that I haven't already (Parlor Mob, Temperance Movement). Hopefully this thread will be useful in opening my eyes/ears to new stuff.

That being said, I have noted down a couple of bands/artists I've heard on Planet Rock that I'm meaning to check out:

Joe Bonamassa

So I suppose I do have some stuff to get working on

A mate of mine told me to give this song a listen by the Courteeners, they seem pretty decent, this is the only song i have listened to of theirs thus far, so i'm going to give one of their albums a listen before I pass Judgement, but based on this song they seem to have potential.

Possibly the pick of the bunch but pretty much all Cancer Bats stuff is brilliant though. Not really 'Rock' though, whatever 'rock' is.

'Melodic hardcore/post/pop-punk' I think is their official niche I think, or some rubbish.

Check out 'A Wilhelm Scream' if you haven't already, another class band.

Absolutely not.  A Day To Remember would be under "melodic hardcore" which is really just "pussy/poppy metal."

Off the back of hearing "The Uncanny Valley" by Stone Sour and Corey Taylor in "From Can to Can't" on the Sound City record, I decided to give Stone Sour's latest album a listen.

Don't think I'll be listening to it again, which is a shame as I really like his voice. Bit too much roaring and not enough variation for my liking. Most songs sound the same once they get going. I know it's harsh judging an album on one listen, but it ain't really my thing to be honest, seemed a bit goth/wrist slitty.

Good lad. I've never actually listened to any Kyuss funnily enough.

One thing I always say to people listening to QOTSA for the first time is that they are a band that you should probably just accept that you are going to want to skip certain songs, but don't let those songs affect your opinion of the other absolutely cracking songs.

That being said, I don't really think that statement applies to ...Like Clockwork, I think it's class from beginning to end.

Yeah, they're good. I haven't been here for a bit, but I think it's the best place for this. I've had Purple's "Speed King" rattling round my head for a couple of weeks (I know, :mick:) and have had to listen to it a dozen times tonight to exorcise it. I just have to hear it over and over to stop it from replaying in my head. I reckon it's just me. I've had to do it with Green Day and Distillers before. Never mind. Still think it's a proper good song like. Going for "Burn" next. JFC, 40 years ago.

Loving this track at the moment:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAnoHjPpsTg

Reminds me a bit of The Pretender by the Foo's (in the verse).

Been listening to bits of Scott Stapp, Toseland, The Answer, Von Hertzen Brothers ("Coming Home" is class), Shinedown, and Rival Sons lately. Still think Rival Sons are the best of all of the new stuff I've been listening to. "Head Down" is a really good album. New album due out as well :)

I never really managed to get into Witchcraft, they sound a little flat/muffled to me for some reason. Same for Graveyard as well, although I don't mind their previous album.

Also, I can't make my mind up on Brant Bjork.

Really like "Fire, Fire" by Heavens Basement too, but not much else of theirs.

Following months of speculation, Foo Fighters have finally confirmed details of their highly-anticipated eighth studio album. The as-yet-untitled record, serving as the follow-up to 2011′s excellent Wasting Light, will arrive in the fall through Roswell/RCA Records.

The album’s release will coincide with the airing of Dave Grohl’s new HBO TV series, which was first reported yesterday. According to a press release, the series will document Foo Fighters’ sessions in eight different cities — Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, DC and New York — as they record the album in various legendary studios.

The press release explains: “One song was recorded in each city, every song featuring local legends sitting in, and every lyric written in an unprecedented experimental style: Dave held off on putting down words until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the experiences, interviews and personalities that became part of the process.

“Each episode delves into the singular regional identity of each city-how each region shaped these musicians in their formative years, and in turn the impact those people had on the cultural fabric of their hometowns-ultimately celebrating their common bond: Every artist that appears in the show, regardless of genre or locale, started as an average kid with the universal dreams of making music and making it big.”

(Read: Reasons Dave Grohl is Awesome: As Told In Photos)

The first episode of the series will premiere on the eve of the band’s 20th anniversary. Grohl himself served as director.

Additional details will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Just write and record an album with your band, man. Recording each song in a different studio. You're a rock outfit. Get everyone in a room and play.

Personally I'd much rather see an experienced band that has made it's money/doesn't have anything left to prove go down this route and try and do something different. One of the reasons the Foo's are my favourite band is because of Dave Grohl's absolute passion for music and the desire to challenge himself.

The guy is always doing something to mix things up a bit, whether it be with the Foo's or in side projects, and as a result is probably one of the most diverse acts in the rock genre you'll see.

Also, Sound City is far from awful IMO, the second half of the album in particular is really decent, but seeing as you don't like the Foo's you probably dismissed it earlier than you otherwise would have.

Edit: I do agree with you on the Paul McCartney track - one of the weaker songs on the album (although still not bad). It got awards because it was Paul McCartney/Nirvana rather than the quality of song IMO.

I brought them up on the general music thread a few weeks back I think, if I had to peg them I'd say someone mixed the White Stripes with QOTSA. Great band, 'Little Monster' is one of my favourite songs full stop atm.

Also, it seems like Linkin Park's new album will be closer to Hybrid Theory and Meteora than... well, all of the other s*** they've rolled out bar the odd song. Will at least give it an experimental listen to see how that goes, apparently they've got a few canny artists guest starring like Tom Morello, one of the blokes from SOAD who wasn't Serge, Tom Morello, the lead singer of Helmet, Tom Morello, and a rapper.

Not exactly optimistic, like.

Off to this in a couple of weeks.  My first gig was Ozzfest in 2001 where Black Sabbath headlined - can't believe I'm getting to see them again 13 years later.

How far Page Hamilton has fallen, collaborating with Linkin Park. :scared:

Tom Morello collaborated with Bruce Springsteen recently.  The Ghost of Tom Joad was one of the songs on RATM's covers album, and he and Springsteen did another version together recently.  The solo is absolutely astounding.

Foo Fighters teased the name of their upcoming eighth album last week with a Facebook post and an eight-second video of a man, presumably Dave Grohl, growling, "All riiiiise." Now the group has revealed that it has named the record Sonic Highways and detailed the track list for the album (listed below) on their website. The 44-minute album, which the group co-produced with Butch Vig, is due out November 10th and is available for pre-order. The 180-gram vinyl edition features nine covers, including one for each of the eight cities the band recorded in for the record.

RELATED
Preview Dave Grohl's New HBO Doc Series
"This album is instantly recognizable as a Foo Fighters record, but there's something deeper and more musical to it," Grohl said in a statement. "I think that these cities and these people influenced us to stretch out and explore new territory, without losing our ‘sound'." Despite sharing a name with Grohl's upcoming documentary, the album is not a soundtrack of that HBO series.

The group also premiered a 14-second clip of Dave Grohl getting a tattoo of the phrase "In the end, we all come from what's come before" with an infinity symbol on his arm.

Although it proved to be somewhat of a red herring, the number eight has been a recurring theme in the buildup to the announcement. In June, Grohl told Rolling Stone that the album would contain eight tracks, recorded in eight different cities and that its making would be chronicled on an HBO TV series, also titled Sonic Highways, that will last eight episodes; the first episode airs on October 17th. The eight-second YouTube was titled "8," and the bit.ly link the group osted to find it had "8-8_8" in its URL.

Additionally, in early August, a Twitter user calling himself Captain Sarcastic posted a photo of a sticker the size of album art that showed a city scape with numerous eights scattered around landmarks from Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Nashville and Austin. It's also worth noting that most of these clues occurred during the eighth month of the year.

Grohl has revealed that the album will feature guest appearances by a number of notable musicians, including Chuck D, Carrie Underwood, Gary Clark, Jr., Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, Butthole Surfers' Gibby Haynes and Joe Walsh.

Grohl's original plan was to record the album in international cities. But once he conceded that that would be "financially impossible," he told Rolling Stone he's happy with how Sonic Highways came out. "We're an American band. We wouldn't be the band we are if it wasn't for the cities here and their music."

Here is the track list for Sonic Highways:

1. "Something From Nothing"
2. "The Feast and the Famine"
3. "Congregation"
4. "What Did I Do?/God as My Witness"
5. "Outside"
6. "In the Clear"
7. "Subterranean"
8. "I Am a River"

It would have been as we went a saw them live last November and the album had been released for a good couple of months before that.

It is there best album, like Lenny says there isn't a single below par song on the album. My God is the Sun is probably the best imo.
Title: Re: All Things Rock

I think Songs for the Deaf is probably their most explosive, and has the strongest individual tracks of any of their albums - but still has one of two filler songs, as does Lullabies (although Lullabies has grown on me over the years). Like Clockwork is solid from beginning to end and has a bit more emotion to it.

Speaking of Lullabies, Like a Drug has become one of my favourites off that album despite not technically being part of it. Sounds like it should be in a Tarantino film.

Frontman Dave Grohl will also sit for an interview with David Letterman on Monday, October 13, the first night of the band's residency.

"Outside" sounds f***ing class. As an album, overall I'm not sure yet, it's different for them. Will give it a good few listens and make my mind up.

Also, I'm pretty sure the track listing is wrong, the last 4 tracks should be in reverse order.

I like it, the last two tracks are a bit different for them. The second to last sounds almost slightly "There is Nothing Left to Lose" era Foo's mixed with a touch of Pink Floyd.

The album could possibly do with one more track, maybe another fast rocker type.

I've listened to half and knowing nothing about the development or production of it I'll say it's heavily influenced by a lot of classic rock stuff. Seems that's their intent from what I can see.

Absolutely not a criticism mind, it sounds amazing but the influences stand out to me. It's very different from other ff stuff.

 It's different to their older stuff, but now that I've listened to it a few times I'm starting to like it. Can't say it's anything special but it's alright. My biggest gripe is that it's only 5 tracks - if those songs were part of an 8-10 track album I'd probably really like it.

I'm ashamed to say I have a bit of a blind spot for the Beatles (for some reason they never interested me), so not sure on that one. I think Racing with a Beating Heart is a good song though.

Cry Wolf (the track) is the best track IMO, I think you'll like that after a few listens, I love the build up.

New Parlor Mob album, Cry Wolf, is out now - only 5 tracks (although still 30 mins).

Just giving it a listen now.

what do you say dude?  it's not great like, plus i nearly f***ing flung it when that ripped off beatles intro kicked in (racing with a beating heart)

honestly thought we were past that as a species

 It's different to their older stuff, but now that I've listened to it a few times I'm starting to like it. Can't say it's anything special but it's alright. My biggest gripe is that it's only 5 tracks - if those songs were part of an 8-10 track album I'd probably really like it.

I'm ashamed to say I have a bit of a blind spot for the Beatles (for some reason they never interested me), so not sure on that one. I think Racing with a Beating Heart is a good song though.

Cry Wolf (the track) is the best track IMO, I think you'll like that after a few listens, I love the build up.

just the intro to the song is as big a beatles rip off as you're ever likely to hear beyond oasis....doesn't fit with the rest of the song either, it's weird

dead man the best track by a mile for me

That's a good song too, I actually quite like the album come to think about it, just wish it had more tracks (much like the Foo's album).

Incidentally, the deluxe edition of Dogs by Parlor Mob on Spotify has 3 extra tracks I'd never heard before, they're not bad.

Don't know if we have a metal thread here but my hardcore punk/grindcore band is releasing our first EP song by song on bandcamp. You can listen to the first three songs here. More will follow in the next couple of weeks.

Anyone heard of a band called Navarone before?

Stumbled on a song called "Time" by them on Spotify, and I think it's really f***ing good. Slow build up, powerful ending. Can only find a live version of it on Spotify (below).

Gave their album a listen this morning and it was promising. Like the guys voice, ever so slightly Myles Kennedy-ish.

Smash and Grab is pretty good too, and has a studio version on Youtube:

Playing in Scandinavia soon I saw. Used to love them, must have seen them 10 times or more back in their earlier days. Started talking to them outside a gig they played in Glasgow once, must have stayed and talked with us for an hour or more - really good guys. Their new stuff just doesn't really do it for me, still sounds good but not very creative.

IMO Legend is a masterpiece. If it was made in the 70's it would be considered one of the classic rock albums I reckon.

Depends on what you're into really but it's heavy rock in the sense of having some really long tracks on it but it's so good.

The Outcast from the new album is also excellent, on a par with the Legend stuff probably.

I'll listen later, loved The Outcast.  Never really got into Legend that much though, much preferred The Alchemist and Firewood.

Got a lot of time for them, I was at a festival in Holland in 2010 and about half the bands had to cancel because of the volcanic eruption in Iceland grounding their flights.  Witchcraft were at the festival just as punters, but did an impromptu two hour set with an hour's notice and another band's instruments.

About a year ago I went off the deep end with what's known as Stoner or Desert rock and still love it to this day.

The Scandinavians are class; Witchcraft, Graveyard, Dozer in particular plus American stuff like Kyuss and Brant Bjork.

No idea why Stoner rock would appeal to yourself mind :shifty:

I really like Ghost's album last year.  Their first one was good but not very original - just sounded like loads of other 70s/80s rock bands.  Their second album was god-awful, but with this one they've found their own sound and got it right.

Probably not in the same area of rock as the sorts described above, but Navarone's Vim and Vigor album is probably the best album from a new band I've heard for years, I've been listening to it solid for months now. The first track, Time, is possibly up there with one of my favourite ever songs; the ending is so good and his voice fits perfectly.

Really balanced album with a bit of everything.

Aye. Really liked it. Some of the songs are a bit over the top in the production stakes like. The digital distortion on The Day That Never Comes is borderline unbearable.

Just happened to have a listen to Metallica's newest album, albeit 8 years after it was released, just out of curiosity after listening to Ride the Lightening...s***, it's really, really good. Canny mad that they released an album like that at all, let alone releasing it straight after St Anger. It's excellent.
Death Magnetic?

Aye. Really liked it. Some of the songs are a bit over the top in the production stakes like. The digital distortion on The Day That Never Comes is borderline unbearable.

As I recall the guy who did the mastering said there was little he could do because the producer had already compressed the s*** out of it. Can't remember if Bob Rock produced that one or not.

Edit: Rick Rubin, not Bob Rock. And I guess it was really the mixing engineers he blamed. Though you'd think the producer would have oversight of what went from mixing to mastering.

Aye, Rick Rubin, although I wouldn't be surprised if that was pretty much all he did with it once it had been recorded by his engineers. It's got that early raw sound to it, so it sounds great imo, but the limiting on it is truly awful and ruins a few of the songs.

I know they're not really popular anymore but Feeder have a new album coming out, and this is their new track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz5FDFYGR3Q

Always been one of my favourite bands and think it's a shame how underrated they are. They have a very diverse back catalogue but seem to have never recovered in the mainstream since Pushing the Senses. Their last couple of albums have been decent, too. Renegades, in particular, if it was released by an up and coming band would have been massive IMO.

The Good Life are another good one to listen to if you haven't already as well. It's Tim Kasher's other band. I never really listened to them that much tbh, but I remember Always The Bridesmaid was a decent song by them. All of the stuff that was either on or sounded like it was on Saddle Creek was absolutely magic around that time like. Deathcab, Postal Service, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Pedro The Lion, Bright Eyes, The Faint, Desaperacidos, Broken Spindles, Rilo Kiley, Azure Ray and loads of others either brought out mint albums or had at least one or two class songs.

I know they're not really seen in a great light these days, much to my disappointment as I think they're such an underrated band, but Feeder have a new album out.

I really like it; has a good balance of driven rock, with hints of Grant Nicholas' softer solo work. There are some new ideas in their sound with this album compared to their more traditional sound.

Definitely recommend a listen.

It's a shame that Pushing the Senses essentially killed them as a popular band as they've released some very good stuff since then. I still maintain that if Renegades was released by new/unheard of band, it would have been massively successful.

Saw a band called Reigning Days as a support act the other night; was really impressed with them.

Got a slight Royal Blood sound about them. They only have 5 tracks on Spotify (one being a cover of Speed of Light by Iron Maiden), but if these tracks are anything to go by they could be big.

Renegade and Empire in particular are class.

I've been listening to Billy Talents latest album Afraid of Heights this evening, having listened to and liked a few of there singles over the years, namely "Devil on my Shoulder" "Red Flag" and "Rusted from the Rain" so I figured id give an album a listen. It's really freaking good, there isn't much in the way of deviation throughout the album which could be a negative for some but it's medium to heavy rock all the way through, and really worth a listen:

Venom is obviously a good start. Then Mercyful Fate if you can get through King Diamond's voice.

f***ing Mayhem...that is just a crazy story.

Neesy - get Emperor's first album, At The Heart of Winter by Immortal and Sworn to the Dark by Watain.

Edit:  And Storm of the Light's Bane by Dissection.

I'm massively into my metal, but black metal is something I've never really listened to.

Speaking of Scandinavian metal, I proper love Opeth.

Opeth have changed massively over the years. I could have listened to the drum tracks alone back in the day.
