Title: Forum Service Issues and Updates
Post by: Dave on Monday 27 December 2010, 12:41:38 AM
Please go here for the latest forum updates or if you have any technical issues: http://www.newcastle-online.org/nufcforum/index.php/topic,73457.0.html

The football board is by far the busiest so it makes sense to discuss things there.

Cheers.

Just to let people know we'll be down from approximately 3am this evening for essential maintenance. Will try and be done within an hour.

Sorry to all the Yanks/night owls.

Might just be me but thought I would post in case it isn't, seems a bit slow today and pages have timed out on a few occasions.

I have been having a few issues with my modem though, as said just thought I better post in case there were problems that needed highlighting :dontknow:

I was getting a few slow loaders yesterday afternoon. 'Page created' times were about 0.1-0.4 a few times. Didn't seem like anything major though, occured for a couple of minutes.

imgur.com is quick and easy for me. Think imageshack now needs you to sign up or something and it's affected the add on on here iirc?

It will have been down around the time of this post as that's when the weekly backup happens.

Has the place been running slowly for the last day or so, or is it just me..?  Ashley and co. organising a DDoS because of the Chronicle thread..?

That said, the bottom of the page says "page created in 0.054 seconds" and it took two or three to come up, so it's probably my PC riddled with malware

What is going on here? It's just a link to a Wikipedia page, but the forum identifies it as some kind of embed. Quote my post to see.

Any idea why fonts seem strange on Chrome for Android, while using the desktop version?  Like the name and description of the Ticket forum on the main index is huge.  The list of users in the football forum is huge, but the list of people viewing individual threads isn't.  When scrolling through a thread, some posts are huge and some aren't.

So it would be something like this:

You then would click on the '2' and see what the notifications were, like:

"Kaizero has sent you a PM"
"Shak was quoted your post"

That's how Dave will do it when he decides to pack it in - he'll switch the forum off, then he'll delete his Facebook account, then we'll realise it was a fake limp all along.

If it's a total pain to sort then alright (it's not me sorting it) but in all honesty I doubt I'll be on here as much.  Last couple of days since the update I've just not bothered other than the odd check.

Whereabouts can you see that?

I'm on it now and can't see a way to see all unread posts across all boards, which is what you get in the Unread tab on Tapatalk.
Title: Re: Forum Service Issues and Updates
Post by: Dave on Friday 7 September 2018, 12:56:50 PM
The circle with three lines top right, on the board you want or the main index. Don't forget it's just a theme, so almost all of the same functionality of the full site is there somewhere.
Title: Re: Forum Service Issues and Updates
Post by: Interpolic on Friday 7 September 2018, 01:03:17 PM
OK that's functionality seems decent, thanks Dave.

How do you get to the last unread post in a topic again?  Can only get to the first or last post.

Still can't see me using it a great deal mind, it looks bad compared to Tapatalk and I prefer reading the forum in an app.  Doesn't really matter what I think but raising it as there might be others that feel similar and drop off.

Any idea why Tapatalk Pro is working, and are you going to switch anything off so that won't be the case anymore?  If not I might buy that.
Title: Re: Forum Service Issues and Updates
Post by: Dave on Friday 7 September 2018, 01:06:51 PM
Last unread is just the chevron to the right, which disappears when you're up to date. What's missing is easily jumping to the end of a thread that you've already read, which is annoying.
Title: Re: Forum Service Issues and Updates
Post by: Dave on Friday 7 September 2018, 01:07:53 PM
No idea on Pro, would guess that it's just not been updated in the same way as the free app. This will surely happen at some point.

If I remove the plugin it won't work on any version.
Title: Re: Forum Service Issues and Updates
Post by: Dave on Friday 7 September 2018, 01:09:03 PM
I also like that switching to the full site is a simple one click toggle back and forth. There must have been things that have never worked properly in Tapatalk, like spoilers, embedded stuff etc. If something isn't quite right in the mobile theme you can just go full site temporarily.

Disagree about it looking bad though, I much prefer the clean black/white/grey look to all that other bobbins.

Clicking the chevron to the right is bringing me to the last post regardless of whether it's the last unread post.  That's when I do it in the Unread section anyway.

What's the issue with the errors generated by Tapatalk Dave? Is it slowing the forum? Creating more workload for you? If we understand the why it will make it easier to understand the change.

It was just the final straw tbh, a mod to one of the core forum files that it had made wasn't working so literally any time anyone clicked on anything the forum reported an internal error. It didn't even go away when I uninstalled it, I had to manually edit the lines out of the file. It's a piece of s***. Might be a concidence but the forum has been loads faster for me since I got rid anyway.

Here, read this: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=561011.0

You on an iPhone? I've been dabbling in shortcuts, and have one that uploads images to imgur direct from the share sheet or from your photo library. And copies the direct img url to the clipboard.

Thread replies IIRC. Remember it's just a theme so have a mess about in the proper options. Chances are the setting will carry through.

Apart from the swear filter, obviously.

I'm getting used to the mobile app. It would be nice to upload and for the theme to be black, but they're not essential. Any chance of making the tgread arrow always take you to the latest post and not just the first time/when there's a new post?

Bear in mind the mobile theme is a paid app, it's not something I can develop myself. Previously I asked if the default behaviour when clicking on a thread that's already read could take you to the end instead of the start; personally I think that's miles more practical than going back to the start. Hasn't been implemented, obviously. I'll ask again.

I can't change the main colour either I'm afraid, just the elements which are currently matched to the dark grey on the main site.

Love this place but things are killing me day by day. And it's getting worse, not better. But details aren't important as it'll quickly descend into another argument or whatever, you know. I want to quietly (as poss) disappear and not fire off anything etc etc. Serves no purpose :)

Are you an admin, D?

Damn, shame fella, you are one of the good guys. Fair play to having the balls to cut loose, i hope there are no regrets.

Just picture the moment its finally confirmed, Ashley has sold the club, no doubt in it, no way back...then think if part of your celebrations would be to come on here and join in the party. If that's not there and you don't think you'd regret it then you are doing the right thing. It's all i hang around for, that tiny bit of hope and see the joy in everyone who has gone through the ringer with me over the years.

Naaa, not Admin. Christ.

I've quit all social media, with the exception of Twitter which I'm reluctant to get vocal on because all it takes is one 'wrong' comment and you're under attack (happened during indy ref to me ).  So I don't think I could ever actually leave here.  Would have nowhere at all to talk about anything, but certainly thought about it.  As recently as this morning.

I think we're all letting general negativity get to us a bit much.  There's a lot of toxicity in many subjects, from NUFC to Brexit, to politics in general and the changing of social norms.  All of which can get people's backs up, but I think we just need to take a step back and leave for a bit.  We're a bit different from social media in that we're a genuine community and have legitimately helped people out before.  I don't know who I'd be, where I'd be, but it wouldn't be a good place if I hadn't had this place at certain points over the last 15 years.

I'd only ask that people don't go as far as completely wanting out, we're not a massive platform, we'll more often than not bend over backwards to help you out.  We've banned people to stop them coming and force them to have the break they know they need but their willpower won't allow.  We're more than happy to rename accounts, or allow you to come back under a new guise if you feel too much of a reputation has been gained in your old name.  All I'm saying is, talk to us before you do.  Which is what POOT did and why we agreed to do as we did.  I also predict, he will be back. :)

EDIT:  Also, we're not obligated to delete all posts, we only have to anonymise them.  So it's not the clean break one might have assumed.

Nice post. Its funny but no coincidence a lot of us are feeling the same. I think for a lot of people this place ties us to NUFC and when we see no hope or an out from Ashley then its easy to view negatively, especially when there are a few wums out stirring the pot. I used to kid around (been called a wum but that wasn't the intention) take things a little too far, but knocked it on the head as i can see people are worn out.

Its a shame some just aren't reading the atmosphere, or worse are and still going and causing more tension across the forum. Shame that focus isn't on getting Ashley out rather than in-fighting.

Brexit just causes the perfect storm. It's dividing more than just forums. Both NUFC & Brexit are caught in a timeloop, nothing changes. Groundhog day, reliving the same s*** day after day. Two topics that dominate this place are broken, out of our control with no end in sight.

I'll not leave (sorry Greg ) as when Ashley goes i want to attend the big N-O party (KI is paying for the beers) as it will be well earned for all, but that day seems further away than ever right now, good members leaving doesn't help. Fingers crossed he'll be back, along with others and we have our day again.

well what browser are you using on this azure remote desktop thingy? ie? EDGE? some proprietary s***? No admin rights I assume?

Chrome with no admin rights. Managed browser and no ability to add extensions. Was thinking developer mode in Chrome and/or an exe or some s***?

I don't think there'd be a way to do it that would be persistent. Like, using dev tools you can go in and link to the css / paste the css in, but you'd have to do it every time you opened a NO window. Seems painful.

Was wondering if there was a way to host a site with an iframe in that linked to NO, but applied my own CSS. Hard to google this s*** given how it has no sensible use case. Just idiots like me f***ing around.

In great news for those without managed browsers, and with crippling eye strain, there is now a Dark Merd option. When installing, click customize settings. Enable Dark Mode here. It's still in testing tho. Inevitably gonna be some borked pages.

I tried to install the extension using dev tools direct from the repo but it didn't work. It was that Stylish replacement you posted after it got taken off the store (https://github.com/openstyles/stylus). Not sure if Im getting the right folder or if my restricted rights stop me from uploading it. Which file do I need to install from there?

Clicking on Load Unpacked is unresponsive. So I'm guessing that's disabled too. f***er.

Updated CSS with an option to hide football board link from main page. Hoping it's an adequate solution for my need to cut that s*** out of my life.

Sounds like a background process has crashed on the server and needs restarting.

Yeah I thought that and tried rebooting but no help. It appears to be Sphix which I believe is attached to the SQL database. Anyone who knows more than me (won't be hard) I'm all ears.

Guessing it's a tool that auto updates? Judging by their site it's still running. Last update was October 2018 and though there are changes and warnings in the release notes it'd be strange for any issues to only show now. Mentions a change to the api though.
I'm no db analyst but I swear the indexing is f***ed. Long page loads and knackered search point to db issues in my experience.

It's unfortunately more embarrassing than that haha there was a different issue which I sorted which required a server reboot. Following the reboot the Sphinx service hasn't rebooted or has become corrupt. I've tried checking it's status from console but I get nothing, but it not running can cause that. No idea how to restart it as it's not a service within WHM by the looks.

Seen these?

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/7902505/how-gracefully-restart-sphinx-search-daemon-after-reindexing
https://serverfault.com/questions/8619/how-do-i-make-sphinx-restart-when-i-reboot-my-ubuntu-server

I mean we aint reindexed, but Dave did db work. Think it was upgrades and moving things about but not sure of detail. Speaking to him he didn't do any indexing. Might still translate, though.
