So we playing a normal 4-4-2 then lads?

I guess it's the most likely formation. It's simple and most people will have played in it. Back threes are complicated, particularly for people who don't know each otherand one up front is a difficult job, especially if we are struggling to keep the ball or support the frontman.

When we played Whitby the other day, we played a back 3, and I was one of the three.

It was a proper eye opener, I was shattered.

I've played for teams that have used both back 3 and back 4 systems. If you work hard on the back 3 and have good communication it can work well but it puts a lot of strain on the wing backs. Back four is a lot simpler.

I think all tactical discussions should be held over PM. I have a sneaking suspicion that somebody may be watching us.

Think we should play 4-1-3-2 rather than the traditional 4-4-2. Everyone will be bombing forward so we may need someone to sit and fill in the gaps.

That's a fair shout with regards to a holding player. Does leave you with the problem of the other three either being too narrow thusly leaving the full backs exposed or a big space in the middle of the 'diamond' if two stay wide and the AM pushes on thinking he's got licence to do it.

I think it'll come together once we can see where the other lads think they can/should/want to play.

Post by: MKSC on Friday 23 April 2010, 11:45:09 AM
Stu already said we should try and meet up an hour or so before the 6.30 start time to get organised. Otherwise we'll be eating in to our game time. I'll be in the town from about 3.30 so will probably be wandering around SJP soaking up the atmosphere.

I'd like to get all the team selection sorted out before the day though, so we have time to make any alterations if somebody is unhappy with anything.

I've logged all the numbers people have said they have/are getting on the OP. Keep checking it if you are planning on getting a number printed.

I've just bought a 95/96 season grandad collar shirt on ebay. It's now a tough decision on which one to wear. Probably still go for this seasons top as I'm not sure about getting printing done on a retro shirt, think it might ruin it. Also keeping tabs on a retro keeper top that I fancy.

In 8 days I'll be on the bus on my way up. The excitement builds.

As awesome as that Grandad-collar kit is... it looks like there's a good chance a lot of us are getting/already have the current home top. Obviously people can wear what they want but i think it'd look mint if everyone was wearing the same shirt. All them IFA teams we've played really look the part in their full strips.

And doesn't NSG already have the current top, with #37 on the back?

I agree, it would be great to all wear the same thing, as the away team are planning on doing. I did say I probably won't wear the old one as I don't fancy defacing it with a name and number on the back.

If everyone has the 09/10 home shirt then it would be good if we all wear it. Official shorts and socks are not needed, Any black shorts and either black or white socks will do.

It's not a problem Dave. I don't think we should make a big deal about it, we always said any vintage shirt would be ok. If you want to get it then get it, if you don't then there's no need to.

Aye i know, not a big deal or owt. Just all i was saying was, if you have the current home top, you might aswell wear it as it seems, like, the most common shirt owned amongst us.

Mind Dave you've got the best shirt of our Premier League era so it's not biggy.

Yep Nick has #37 on his shirt (Rob Lee!) for this season but I think he has a couple as one of them got signed at Villa last season

As an aside, I had my 92/93 home shirt on that day and wouldn't let any of the relegating b******s near that bad boy...

You don't need the current one. DOn't worry about it.

Get yourself rested and maybe get some ice on the rib area if it's swelling/bruising at all. Your fitness to play in the game at SJP, as with everyone else, is at your own discretion and if you say you can play your full allotted time then play it you shall. If you pass out through pain we'll just roll you off the pitch.

I'd hope the referee will run the game sensibly and fairly. By that I mean give fouls that need to be given but not to blow up for everything. Let the game flow. If somebody is being over silly and needs a card then fine, but we don't want to be seeing anyone sent off.

Quote from:  London Evening Standard

In the build-up to the critical title decider between NOFC Home and NOFC Away next week there has been a lot of talk on injuries to key players having an effect on the game. Today we sent our chief sports writer Arry Arris to have a chat with Home team captain Colin 'MKSC' Rance.

AA: So Colin, there is only a few days left before the big game and all the talk coming out of your opponents camp is of injuries to key players. Do you think they are just trying to throw your preperations off track?

CR: There's definitely a bit of the old mind games being tried out that's for sure. So far we've heard that their key player Stu Dow is suffering from a groin problem, or was it a hamstring problem? I can't remember now as they've changed the story a couple of times, and there is also the ankle knock the big Chris NUT has been suffering from for a few weeks now. Let's just say I wouldn't be at all surprised if both were out there on the pitch come kick off time on May 4th.

AA: You are sceptical of the reality of these injuries then??

CR: Well everyone knows they have a great media team over at the yellow deckchair stadium and I can definitely smell something, and I'm not talking about the steak bakes young Greg left in the laundry room, if you know what I mean.

AA: Have you got any injury worries of your own?

CR: Well Disco Mark has been complaining of a side strain, at first we thought it might have been a cracked rib but it turned out he just bruised it when he did an especially bouncy dance routine in Flares the other night. We sent him to see a masseuse at the Chinese brothel and she sorted him right out so I'm confident he'll be fine. Other than that the only issues I'm anticipating are the general lack of fitness that most of the team will be suffering from, for many of the lads it's been a while since they had a game of this magnitude and I am concerned about how many of them will last the distance. Fortunately we'll be doing rolling subs and I've got a job lot of oxygen masks off Fat Elvis that we'll keep in the dugout for emergencies.

AA: Finally, are you confident that your boys, who many see as underdogs for this crucial game, can step up to the plate and take home the trophy?

CR: We're in for a tough game, without a doubt. On paper they look strong at the back and have established IFA players all over the park. But I know we've got heart, we've got fight and we've got desire. I'm certain we'll be able to give them a decent game and we'll cause them some problems. I think the key battles will be in the middle of the park. If we can stop them playing they'll have to revert to plan B, and I'm not sure anyone over there will have thought of one. I'm gonna send my boys out with some inspiring words and I know they'll push themselves to the limit. If we come off that pitch having given our best then that'll be good enough for me.

So there you have it. The tension is building, the mind games have started and the whole of the world wide web is shaking with anticipation. Who will come out on top in this titanic battle? The skillful and experienced  Banana Splits or the underdog Barcode Boys?

And don't forget, it's on Star Wars day. May the 4th be with you.

Aw go on then. Should be a good craic. Will be a bit of video diary charting my epic journey, some interviews, a bit of pre-match chat and hopefully some celebration from the triumphant home team. On sale on all good market stalls for 99p.

Away team have some rather splendid line-up graphics floating around.

Do we have a starting XI?

NSG

Dino --- MKSC - ChrisMc --- JonBob

Dave -- Rocker - Muckman -- Disco

Kevin - Muzza

Subs: Yorkie, Neesy, Selwyn, Steve

Something like dis to start with? Obviously there's a few players in the opening post whom i've never seen play before so that's just a very rough mock-up. But that team there has everyone in a position they're comfortable playing in.

It's not that simple, unfortunately. I've got to make sure everyone gets the same (or near as dammit) amount of time on the pitch. Also we've 'tossed' for ends already as we need to know which way we are shooting for the starting line up. We will be shooting towards the Gallowgate end in the first half, which means I am in goal and NSG is up front. In the second half we will be shooting towards the Leazes end which is the half NSG will be in goal for. The toss on the day will only be for the purpose of kick off.

The way things are looking it appears we are looking at around between 40 and 45 minutes on pitch each (with me and nsg being the exception). The current system I'm favouring is the first set of changes being done on around 18 to 20 minutes. The second lot at half time and the third lot about 10 mins into the second half. There will also be a few changes in the last ten minutes to even up the playing time. I want to try and give everyone a decent run of time on pitch (i.e not bringing somebodyt on then taking them off again 10 minutes later). It does mean that 4 people will play straight through till about 40ish minutes and some others will miss the first 15-20 and play through till the end.

Of course on the day we could face unexpected injuries and bouts of severe unfitness leading to unscheduled rest periods, which will completely undo any plans I have made, so I'm not sure if I should even bother to plan ahead!

I'd plan ahead down to the finest detail tbh. IE, who's gonna start, who's gonna replace who after the Xth minute. If you want a hand with it Colin i'd be happy to help out.

To clarify on the meeting arrangements for Tuesday.

I will be in the vicinty of SJP (probably flitting between Shearers and the Club Shop) from around 4pm on the day. I know a few others are also heading down early to build up the atmosphere, feed the anticipation and generally bounce about excitedly like small children.

I'd really like everyone to be at Shearers by 6pm at the latest, although the earlier the better. Stu has said we need to be outside the players entrance at 6.25pm. I'd recommend turning up in as much of your kit as possible and having your change of clothes with you in a bag as opposed to the other way round. This way we can have our team meeting before we go in thus not wasting any pitch time.

Plenty of rest and limited drinking before the game. There'll be more than enough done when it's over.

You do, but I don't think many people will want to spend 30mins staring at the changing rooms before running out onto the pitch.

Supposedly, the format is 20 mins warm-up, back to the changing rooms for 10mins, then the ref calls both teams out into the tunnel.
