Never had one but have been thinking of getting something written along the outside of my forearm, not big or anything just a nice small size in either Latin or a joined up English kind of font.

What it will say I am not sure, maybe a proverb or some kind of motivational saying of some sort.

My mate has got about five Newcastle tattoos dotted about his person.

Combined with his skinhead and beer belly it makes him look like a right hooligan, when in reality he is soft as f*** and deathly scared of worms.

I've never felt strongly enough about anything to get them. The stuff that made sense to me five years ago seems embarrassing now.

Who would get symbols etc of a football club tattooed onto themselves ???
Title: Re: Tattoo's

Because, when tastefully done, they look good.
Not a massive NUFC/AFC whatever down the fore arm, thats s****

I just think that football is just football, to get it permanently placed on your body seems very extreme to me.

I dont know anything worth having tattoo'd onto yourself tbh, im sure if you had kids you could get their name(s) tattoo'd onto you, but again why?
Title: Re: Tattoo's
Post by: Mr. Snrub on Thursday 14 August 2008, 04:02:05 AM
Personally, I think kids name as a tattoo is really bad.  Maybe it's ok when they are cute little babies and can't talk or anything, but kids grow up..

Like, from my own position now, a 22 year old male, the thought of my dad having my name tattooed on him would be to say the least bizarre and, well.. creepy as hell.

I have a few and I'm thinking about getting a big Newcastle one, as soon as I figure out exactly what and where I want it.. I was thinking about a silhouette of the Tyne Bridge and the nearby buildings on the upper back, but I already have the zion lion (the one in my avatar) on the back of my neck and I don't think I'll handle such a cultural difference on my back for the rest of my life.
the thing with tattoos is that the first leads to a second, and the second leads to twenty more.. so be wise and respect your body

One of my mates has a Newcastle badge on his upper arm. It looks ok but not something I would ever get done.

There's nothing I really want as a tattoo and I think it would be foolish just to get any old tribal just to have something done.

got me year of birth in numerals on inside of arm.

while the actual tattoo isn't exactly the most meaningful, its more the time I got it, who I got it with etc.

plus it looks kewl.

I got a small tattoo of Garfield on my left shoulder. Got it when I was 11, and it was my mom who did it on me. At the time, she told me it wouldn't last longer than 3-5 years, as it wasn't a real tattoomachine, it was something that were normally used to mark lips and eyelids on women, and the needle weren't as big (she has her own beauty clinic).

11 years later, and the f***er is still there, albeit a little fatter then he originally were.

Thinking of getting my sons name on my lower leg, in a rubber stamp style so bits are missing etc...

Like that with borders around, but vertical and with his day and month odf bday above the first letter, and year of bday below the last.

Thinking just a normal font, like the one on the previous page really to give it a proper stamp looking look ( :crazy2:) to it.

personally, I wouldn't put my son's name on my leg.. and not in a stamp-looking style for sure
if you're serious about this, do it the proper west-side way and get a portrait done on your chest

Fair enough, but i'd never get a tat on my upper body either.

Think the stamp look is something you never see, something original just like him.  :smitten:

My right arm is just a mash of colour and random s****, wheares my left arm was purely NUFC based until a few weeks ago.

I'm not one of those people who deeply thinks about my ink at all, as you can tell, and yes, I will look like a wrinkly old radgee t*** in 50 years, but I'll probably be shitting the bed by then so I guess a few tattoos won't be on the forefront my worries.

Just for anyone who may want one on the ribs, I have both ribcages done, and it's f***ing disgusting amounts of pain. Almost like watching Nixon play football

Same with me. I was highly tempted to get a spine done right across my back (Rey Mysterio Jr style), but after looking into it more, 9 times out of 10 it looks like s****. I easily regret things, I need to be sure of what I'm getting.

I love Rockers tatt's like, they're all class artwork but it's so far removed from anything I could consider getting on me but I love he just gets what he loves. Class.

When you going to get the N-O logo?

The day before they update it to the "new" logo that was decided upon 2 years ago.

Gervais' blog...

Got this email from Robin Ince;

"a fellow on twitter wanted you to know he has ruined his life (well I think he's proud of the tattoo, but really)
- http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2w73es8&s=7 (http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2w73es8&s=7)"

Wow. Who wouldn't be proud of that? It's a masterpiece. If you've got a boring arm, all skin coloured and that, pop a huge Brent on it. Perfect.

I can't say I'm not just a bit flattered. And scared. But... wow.

Apart from the obvious 30 or 40 reasons not to have that done, it is a brilliantly rendered piece of tattooing I must say. But... wow.

Just generic topless shots. Really s*** ones I bet. Never even looked at them after they were taken to be honest. Didn't have the heart. Realised it was a mistake half-way through, but by that time the damage was irreversible.

Please let them just show a decent-ish one and no close-ups of my little beer pot.

Didn't in the end because im not 100% sure what I want, and I havent done much research. Only want some simple arabic writing on my arm so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Aye, a bit. Just can't get my head around this kind of stuff. Hobbies, interests, taste, they all change throughout your life. I just can't see how a TV show can have such a sustained impact on your whole life.

Aye, a bit. Just can't get my head around this kind of stuff. Hobbies, interests, taste, they all change throughout your life. I just can't see how a TV show can have such a sustained impact on your whole life.

I can understand that way of thinking, sure. To be honest, in thirty/forty years - i reckon at the very worst i'll think, "well, i was young and i f***ing loved that show, fair enough". And i mean, i did utterly obsess over it. Anything like that is subjective - some people will find that 'saaaad', which is fine.

I'd only have one in a place that could be hidden; the first one is on my chestplate so theoretically, i could go my whole life nobody seeing it.

Do s*** that makes you happy; that's the philosophy i'm attaching where this is concerned. It's not going to effect me in later life... other than potentially thinking i was a bit daft once upon a time. Besides, as i mentioned above, they're both fairly ambiguous. The first one less so, but the one above could be any sort of tattoo design. The bonus for me is that it has personal sentimental value.

Aye, a bit. Just can't get my head around this kind of stuff. Hobbies, interests, taste, they all change throughout your life. I just can't see how a TV show can have such a sustained impact on your whole life.

Me, I've got an NUFC crest on one arm and a papillon on the other to remind me they can never imprison my spirit. That s**t don't change.  :)

I'd draw the line at my favourite TV show, although The Sons of Anarchy one looks cool.

I'm no expert on Tattoos, I've got a f***ing horrible one, but there's always the option to get it changed to something else in the future if you really don't like it.. I was going to get mine changed last year but I'll probably wait a few more and see about getting it removed instead.

What is Hype tattoo studio like? Its on the street down from the Beehive off Bigg Market. Ive been wanting one for ages, went in today to see how long I would have to wait for an appointment, and they offered to do one straight away. Didn't in the end because im not 100% sure what I want, and I havent done much research. Only want some simple arabic writing on my arm so it shouldn't be too difficult.
Anyone?

Top class. I've had a number of pieces done by Gary, simply a brilliant tattoist with brilliant attention to detail.
Went and got mine done on Saturday. Chuffed with it. :) Scott Taylor did mine.

I actually received my two more a few weeks ago. I was given the name of my village on my left pectoral, and Revelations 21:4 on my back. The latter is the largest of the four I have. I don't desire to be heavily inked, but I am quite pleased with these for now.

Aye, with discount you're looking at 180 at the rate I get it at.

Most places would charge a set price before you've even sat down, always be weary of that. Ask people what the hourly rate is and pay per hour, most places are 60-70 but I can get you it for 40, If I book you in.

 It is funny you say that. I swear you are channeling my late grandmother (she became intensely religious towards the final years) who referenced the same verse, when I considered marking myself as a teenager, and used the same to chastise my father for his own. My people have been marking themselves for centuries and some uncles even have tribal scars on their face. I don't see what wrong I have done.

Tattoos are a funny thing to just go to a shop for. I would only get one from someone I trust a fair bit. All of mine have been done by one of my best mates.

Could you not just get his name in a subtle but nice typeface? Or are you looking at imagery?

Na no imagery, but something a little different from what i've seen so far. Its hard to say what, if i ever see it then i'll know.

I quite like this:

Supposed to be A B (not overly keen on the A) which were his initials, then maybe adding the rest of his name to it in a smaller sized font. ???

My worry with something like that would be that Andy Booth is quite a common name - I mean what happens if in a couple of years there's a new character in Corrie or something called that and he's a massive mincer, or maybe that's the name of the mackems new star striker, going to be well awkward.

My honest opinion would be to have just the AB. It's clearly AB (like Cajun says). It's nice and subtle. Also, people who see it might ask what it means...then you can tell them all about him. Rather than them see the whole name and be unlikely to ask.

It's quite nice calligraphy. The ndy ooth font is god awful and heavily jars.

Well put. O0

I know many might think i don't have the right to even talk about tattoos, but fwiw, i prefer the ambiguity of the 'AB'. But that's from a stylistic point of view; i know there are other (serious) motives behind your tattoo. But tbh, in those sort of cases, i think anything you're happy with is perfect - seeing as it's exclusively personal to you anyway.

Was thinking about this on my upper forearm at some point. Cant work out if it's too pretentious and s*** though. Cant really be any worse than having something inane a tiger or some flowers as part of a pattern put on your body for life like.
I'd choose a different Libs lyric than that, so many people have that or "did you see the stylish kids in the riot". Theres so many better quotes that could be taken from their stuff. Music When The Lights Go Out is full of brilliant lines, Death On The Stairs is another like that for me. Still, any Libertines tattoo is a f***ing class one.  :aww:

Congratulations to the fellow with the Ricky Gervais tattoo earlier in this thread, you've got bigger balls than me sir.

Would get one right now if I wasn't so consumed by fear  it's just picking one would make me go mental.  Wouldn't go near the likes of NUFC, tribals, names, portraits.  None of that stuff.  All power to those who do but not my cuppa.

Since I'd be petrified of bad quality I'd be happy to pay a high price to make sure it gets done well.  Always kind of fancied a Moby-Dick related piece since it's always been one of my favourite novels - also got the potential for epic art, accompanied by a quote I haven't decided on yet.  Hell the book is so packed with brilliant prose that there'd be literally hundreds of viable options.  Would think about getting it down my side or something.

Either that or just get a random abstract thing done, something just a little bit different.

Exactly this. You don't grow old with the people who are old now. Everyone has tattoos nowadays. In fact, there's now perhaps an element of surprise if the younger generation DON'T have one.

I guess it's all a matter of opinion anyway, if I see a 60+ year old with tattoos I don't think "I wonder if they regret being tattooed as a youngster", I just think "That is bad ass".

Besides which, when you're old and f***ing decrepid and shitting your pants without realising it, I think the fact you have tattoos will be the least of your worries.

Only thing is, I do know a few older men who have pretty big tattoos and they honestly look like dogshit now they're pushing on a bit.
Getting a bit wrinkly around the edges, tatts look tired and a bit desperate.
Plus they all do bottom rung jobs :undecided:
Maybe I have a bad impression of all this.
Only thing I can think off to describe my thoughts on it is this:
Somebody mentioned in the season ticket thread (I think) about the cards having the old NUFC badge on it (the circular one from the 70s) and how much they didn't like it.
Now imagine if you had gotten that badge tattooed on your arm back then, thinking it was the dogs, and now think it's s***.
That's basically my main problem, in life my tastes, views etc have evolved as I've grown up, learned to think for myself etc, and things that I was into 20 years ago, I wouldn't be seen dead around now.
Wouldn't want a permanent reminder.
But yet, at the time, it was the main thing.

That's basically my main problem, in life my tastes, views etc have evolved as I've grown up, learned to think for myself etc, and things that I was into 20 years ago, I wouldn't be seen dead around now.
Wouldn't want a permanent reminder.
But yet, at the time, it was the main thing.

not sure if they use different inks these days, but i havent got any tattoos and i dont think i ever will tbh

Moby Dick eh? Deeks this:

I really like the Bernini tattoo, would be interested to see that when it's finished. I visited the Borghesi gallery recently and loved it.

You're not going to look good when you're old any way so I don't see what difference having wrinkly tattoos makes.

Any way I'm always really interested in people's tattoos. Thinking about getting a half sleeve done. However I think people like this look awful:

The boot has a meaning, something to do with uniting of houses. That's the Tyrone flag (where we originated apparently) not the Japanese flag. With the fish and lion your guess is as good as mine. Our motto is "Vincere Aut Mori", which translates to "Victory or Death."

For now I'm going to say the lion is Lannister and the fish is Tully. Works for me.

I had a zinger burger which was 10% chicken/90% really crispy/hard coating that I had genuine concerns it might break my teeth. Aye family crests just aren't a thing. Some people might make up their own nowadays but they don't have historical precedent. Coats of Arms belonged to a specific person and were unique, though they may have had common themes running between family members.

Then some random lyrics from Nirvana songs and songs I love from other bands and artists and of course wor lass' and the kids' names in Arabic somewhere. I don't think I would fancy a full on sleeve down my arms like and in my line of work I think tattoos all over my arms would put clients off sadly.

Do they mean anything or are they just pretty patterns?

The top one has a few lines spaced out more which makes it look simpler, however the other one looks like their is more going on but I'm not sure if it just looks kind of cluttered. Very similar but still a little different. At the moment I'm probably edging towards the top one.

I really like the one where the line from the small circle dissected by the circumference of the large inner circle transverses seven-eights of the diameter of the large inner circle, terminating at a slightly larger small circle.

It's my name in Gallifreyan (I'm not a fan of people having their own name tattooed on them at least not in their native language in anyway) with the title of Doctor added on. No probs, I kind of expected some comments and to be fair I was more after people's view on what aesthetically looks better not to actually question the meaning of them so for people to ask and seem to actually like the idea behind it then that is rather pleasing.

Regardless of their meaning...I think they're weak and unbalanced, in their current form.

Can you make the lines heavier without changing their meaning? Or is the thinness important?

Personally...I'd stylise them a bit.
The lines have no meaning, it is the circles which spell out my name, the lines are purely decorative. The translator I'm using will come up with hundreds of variations and the only thing that changes is the lines. I don't want anything with too many lines though as in my opinion it just looks a bit too much.
Title: Re: Tattoos
Post by: Stifleaay on Tuesday 16 July 2013, 11:19:05 AM
Circles are made of lines, too :)

It needs weight added IMHO.

But the main thing is what your thoughts are. If you love them...get it done
I was on about the straight lines. The reason I added the title and used my full name is to give it more weight as you say otherwise it would just be one circle. Each outer circles is a paragraph, each slightly inner circles is a sentence (it doesn't distinguish between names or not), then each inner circle a word and starting at 6 o'clock going anti clockwise each pattern is a letter.

So the more words there is and the more letters in each word the heavier the circle.
Title: Re: Tattoos
Post by: Stifleaay on Tuesday 16 July 2013, 11:26:37 AM
You're not understanding my terminology. More weight/heavier doesn't mean more clutter. As my first point...it means thicker lines. Sorry.

I just think it looks thin and weak no matter how much you add.
Oh so you mean make the lines bolder.
Title: Re: Tattoos
Post by: KDT on Tuesday 16 July 2013, 11:27:18 AM
What size would you be looking at getting it? Given how much is going on it would need to be pretty big to not looked clumped together and for the small circles to stand out.

That was just copied off a photo.

Seen some of their portrait stuff and what-not too, and they look pretty accurate. Might be worth giving them a shout?

Think they normally charge around £65 an hour and they're normally pretty full up.

I still have mine to be finished actually, with a bit of shading and stuff. From around a year ago...

Me too like. I thought about the idea of editing the image first and possibly bringing more colour into it as well, but I might not need to looking at some of those links, they're absolutely insane.

Ah quotes can be canny s**** though, and a bit too literal.

Was just thinking of an easier option artwork-wise too, tbh. I know what you mean though. Depends what you want from your tattoo though I guess.

Forget what you thought I meant, just completely forget it. Because clearly you've either misread it, or I've not explained it properly:

Under the assumption Clem never said "MMIM" in the initial, real-life timeline, I claimed that the words had no place in his memory erasure procedure (and thus the story was taking liberties the sci-fi element). That memory didn't exist so she should never have said it.

In response to my saying that, I thought you may counter with: "but Clem wasn't the housekeeper in real life, that memory didn't actually exist either, but it was there in the procedure!"

So, to counter that potential rebuttal, I said that her appearance as Mrs Whatsherface was different to MMIM. Her appearing as Mrs Whatsherface wasn't a profound message that was somehow communicated between the two characters, unlike MMIM; it was simply a manifestation made in Joel's head in an attempt to cling onto her (and/or some Freudian stuff, if that's what your previous readings would lead you to infer, I wouldn't really know).

When I said 'profound message' I meant an actual message in the story from character A to character B, not a message from director to audience, or whatever.

That's that explained. But I haven't the foggiest clue where you've got the idea that I think your interpretation is 'wrong'.-->

Bit of a big bump like, but does anyone know any amazing tattoo artists that specialise in photo realistic stuff?

A geezer called Rob Richardson in carlisle, have a quick google of his work. My mates just had a full sleeve done with Roman emporors and stuff, it's unbrlievable. Very, very expensive though.

....holy...s***.

I'm not surprised he's expensive like.

Over two grand for the sleeve. To be honest though if I were wanting one I'd pay it, it's not something you want re done. And my mates arm looks like somebody's printed photos on it.

£100 an hour. You have to email him with an idea and he chooses the work he fancies, if he can fit you in months later. Sounds pretentious as hell to me but there's no doubting the end product.

As long as you don't do anything retarded with a healing tattoo like go for a swim, lay out in the sun, pick the scabs etc it'll be fine. Don't worry about caking it in bepanthen every 3 hours. Just throw some Hustle Butter on there when it starts to get itchy and annoying.

Honestly, when getting a tattoo the next stage should be waiting to see if you really want that design in that location. I wanted mine since I was 13-14 and got it when I was 18. Even now the ones I'm pondering getting is one I have been thinking of for 18 months.

Once past this stage you look at different tattoo parlours, different tattooists. All have different styles and are better at different things and on particular locations of your body. Then when you have found the right tattooist do you book the appointment.

Finding someone local who has a killer style you love is a good way to get started. The idea will come once you find a style you love and the artist will really help it come to life for you as that is part of their job to take a fledgling idea and turn it into something beautiful.

And if you don't want something very intricate which it seems like from your post, you can still find a local artist who's work stands out to you and then take a look at their flash sheet which will be a big sheet of smaller ideas and they'll give you something off of that which is a quick and easy way to go.

Yeah, I only really want to get some when I'm happy to show them off with my body.  Lost 3 1/2 stone now in 4 years, but I've changed my diet quite a bit recently and it seems to accelerating the weight loss so hoping to lose another 1 1/2 by the end of the year.

I’m a true believer in finding the right style first and then fitting in your own idea to that.

Start by following accounts on instagram like ”blackworkers” that post daily tattoos from around the world and it’ll start to give you an idea of what’s going on out there in the world of tattoos and can give you inspiration. You might not be able to get to Sweden or Brazil to get a tattoo from someone on there but there may be someone far more local that does a similar style that you can talk to.

Not sure yet, think when I get next few months over with (with degree etc) then I'll concentrate on what I want doing and where.  Was going to ask people for any links to get some inspiration.

Cheers.  I know its something I shouldn't rush into.

I'm the opposite now

I have several tattoos that were done on my lunch break because I felt like getting tattooed that day. Literally seen something I liked the look of, walked in to a studio, got tattooed and been back at me desk in work within an hour. I don't regret any of them but if I had/took longer to think I might not have gotten them.

I've lightened my view on it significantly, but I think if you want to get a bigger, personal piece for your first tattoo, that the method I talked about above works best. Now that I'm just working on filling out a sleeve with tattoos when I travel, it becomes a more shoot from the hip style, which I think is the way you'll have to go if you want to just get a bunch.

I'm saving my other arm for one big sleeve piece though that I'll get from a trusted and high quality artist that has a style I love and is stoked to go through the journey with me which requires research.

Quality Jill and good choice, I love my Nirvana smily face tattoo on my calf with all in all is all we are from All Apologies underneath it. I didn’t like the pain mind and that and deciding what I would want is preventing me from becoming an addict as well because I’d love a few more.

I think I'm addicted mind. I knew this would happen.

Already? Good work.

I think I actually like the "pain" whilst they're being done for some reason.

Didn’t like the pain of my last one last week, but it was the third of a 4 hour session so think my adrenaline had gone. Never again. For a few months.

First one at 15, in Gateshead; regretted it within a year or so. Got p*ssed in Folkestone at 17 and ended up with a Geordies ("are you sure that's 'ow you spell it son?" ) and a dragon (memorable night...). Hated them all at various points, really don't think about them now. Perhaps too much to hate about the rest of my body!

I would love to know what has happened to the guy going before me for the first one who was getting the 1980s' NUFC badge on his scalp. I like to imagine him as a balding middle-aged white-collar worker. All suited and booted with the crest gradually being revealed as his hair recedes.

  What?

I have a few buddies that run shops around Denver and the going rate for a chair in a shop is low-end about $800 a week. They're not making a "fortune" when it comes down to it.

That’s insane  most shops here (that are any good) the tattooer pays £350/400 to the shop then whatever they earn after is theirs and if you’re good you can earn that in a day.

I'll tip on small pieces from time to time but I don't tip on all day sessions.

One of the tattooists I use charges £450 for a full day and she's normally fully booked for the whole week. Know a guy that works at another studio that is booked up for the rest of the year. He also charges around £400 for the day.

Damn. The above average artists here in Denver charge $200/hr usually. Then a 20% tip on that.

I got a tattoo a couple of months ago on my back, first one. A lot of pain but really happy finally doing it, been thinking about it since I was about 17-18 but never really got to it. It was a bit more painful than I thought it would be, and I imagined it to be quite painful already before starting. But it's absolutely amazing how the whole process works though, really gave me some sort of satisfaction being under the needle that I didn't think I would experience. Almost to the point where it felt sad and depressing when the tattoo was done.

Not a fan of posting stuff like this in public though, so if anyone wants to have a look at it send me a PM and I'll send you a picture.

It only feels good for as long as the adrenaline keeps pumping. As soon as that's done I feel like death and the last thing on my mind is getting tattooed again.

Give me the pain from getting tattooed over the post tattoo come down any day of the week.

Went crazy and booked myself in for my first proper tattoo on Sunday.
A studio that i follow in Leeds put a post on Instagram that they had 2 free slots before Christmas, i sent them a message on the off chance they hadn't been filled and before i knew it i'd booked it and paid my deposit.

I'm shitting it a bit now!!

I had both arms done in one sitting. First was fine, second was like someone was cutting my arm off. Basically because the adrenaline was all focused on healing the first one.

I’ll never have more than one place done in the same sitting again.

Giving blood tomorrow then booking another one in the next few weeks, probably over my shoulders.

Best way to do it IMO is to find someone who works in that style whose work you really like, then just send them your ideas and see if they are happy to help come up with something with you. Anyone worth getting tattooed by would much rather have their own creative input and come up with something unique, than have someone coming in saying they want  something their mate cobbled together.

Though if you've got just about no ideas at all that may not be much use either    Again though I'd do some research and find someone whose work you can go through and think youd be happy with a good proportion of it. Would also say it's definitely worth looking outside the north east if you can at all.

This is absolutely the best way to do it. And there is no way they turn you down unless it's not in their preferred style.
