Title: Curb your enthusiasm s10e10
Post by: Cajun on Saturday 21 April 2007, 09:10:19 PM
You have funny comedy, you have clever comedy but this is ingenious comedy!

For some reason I never thought I would like it but I gave it a try anyway and it really is hilarious.  :D

Great indeed.  Takes a bit of getting used to... first time I saw it was by chance on channel 4, can remember thinking "what the hell is going on here?!".

Season 6 is in the making aparently.

Larry himself couldn't have come up with a wittier review.

I agree it's a fantastic show though.

The fact that it's mainly improvised makes the comedy even more funny. One of the most unique shows on TV

It gets better with each episode.

Season six is coming soon, it's all been filmed and Steve Coogan is in it as Larry's shrink.

There's one scene I simply cannot watch. Usually have to fast forward it.

When Diane Keaton leaves her number on his answering machine, only for the last few numbers to get covered up. Their shared interior decorator is there and she won't give up the last few digits. I physically feel like I want to kill her.

Anyway, the cringe factor isn't that bad overall imo, not like the first few eps of The Office for example  :cheesy:

Similar ordeal for me. I hate to feel that embarassed for people, it makes me want to curl up and die. Don't know if you're a Peep Show fan, but that is a similarly excruciating/funny experience.

Six series of grade a comedy.

Jerry should be cowering in a corner somewhere!

He and Larry exported what i believed to be the finest American comedy ever in Seinfeld

Then Larry says his goodbyes and produces what can only be described as a work of pure genius! Gold!

The whole cast needs applause, as mentioned earlier, scenes are off the cuff, and the natural acting from everyone is just sublime!

And by that Cheryl is a sexpot!!

As someone who posts in the film thread 90% of the time I take great offense.  What's wrong with film/tv discussion?  Is music discussion allowed?  or Books?  Threads like this one or the Simpsons quotes one are s*** because it's just a string of quotes we've all seen on the show.  But threads that actually analyse the shows...like the Sopranos ones are always interesting.

To me what's s*** is just quoting dialogue rather than having a discussion about what makes it work, why it's funny.  I love the way the disparate plotlines interweave before culminating in the inevitable denouement that you very rarely see coming.  There's something so inherently satisfying about that and makes it far funnier than the sum of its parts.

Larry is a bit of a t*** too, but you can't help but see everything his way, esp. after a few episodes.  Curb has a cumulative effect; the more you watch, the more you get it.  Bit like The Office in that way.

Maybe it's just any discussion of which you two happen to be a part that's s****? :)

Talking about TV on a forum is nearly as s*** as talking about TV in the pub.

Thats why these threads are always s*** despite the quality of the TV being discussed.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is brilliant though.

Chomp chomp

Not followed the Soprano's discussion on here but that Lost thread was the most boring thing ever written on an internet forum.

Are you comparing TV shows to books? The quality of writing is good on some shows but please dont pretend its high art, its f***ing american TV ffs. 'Oooh the writer developed a theme over 6 episodes' Whoopdy f***ing do.

You're really trying to cultivate the snob image now aren't you?

TBF, it's british TV that limits itself to 6 episodes in a series.  American shows never have less than 10.

Bit rich coming from a self-confessed film-snob AND music-snob. You're the one who castigates the tastes of others, I just think discussing TV on a forum is like discusssing TV in the pub. A bit s***.

I'd love to see where I've said I was a snob, saying when you don't like something specific doesn't make you a snob, refusing to like ANYTHING in a certain genre does, ie TV is s*** and can't hold a candle to literature.

Love to see where i said TV is s***. I think i said this show was 'brilliant'.

So we're agreed.  We're both talking s****.  All you can expect in a tv discussion.

Acting like a pair of huge vaginas tbh.

Maybe it's just any discussion of which you two happen to be a part that's s****? :)

NO's very own beloved c***s.

This weeks wasn't that funny, but considering Seinfeld got a huge stigma attached to it as being a racist show I love the way Larry David keeps poking fun at the issue as overtly as possible.

I got the first five series for Christmas, I'd only seen one episode before that (the first). Actually took me longer than I thought to get into it but it is class. Just watched The Acupuncturist (not that great) and The Doll (nearly suffocated myself laughing).

I am only up to about the 6th epsisode of series 5, but have to say it is probably the greatest American TV comedy show I have ever seen.

Larry David is just so hilarious, he turns the most everyday boring things into, great comedic moments.  The cast is ace too and I am in love or should that be lust with Cheryl.........my number 1 milf tbh.

Season 4 with Ben Stiller and David Shwimmer rules!

I love the one where he rings shwimmers dad to apologize about the nuts and that bloke crashes into the back of him causing larry to call him worse than a mackem and then the phone call at the end!

The whole discussion with Jason Alexandre with the grudge about the Seinfeld finale and the ongoing bashing of the Costanza character (when it was based on Larry)... very Hilarious.

Mine are:

Krazee Eyez Killa
The Survivor (when they renew their wedding vows)
The Car Pool Lane (one Ronaldo mentioned)
AAMCO (a perfect Curb episode)
The Terrorist Attack (has one of the best scenes ever when Larry and Cheryl are talking about if he should leave or attend her event)

among many others.

Yeah that's quality, especially with Cheryl in the background looking on in despair.

End of series 6 they're at some bash (Larry, Loretta, Cheryl and the underwear guy she's dating) for something or other. John Legend's singing and everyone starts dancing. Larry looks over at Cheryl and her date and then looks back at Loretta standing by herself. He goes up and asks her to dance and then there's a quick scene of the whole family back at the house with Larry and Loretta sitting with their arms round each other.

What channel is this on in the UK, I've watched a load of DVDs but never seen it on telly, also which day and what time is it on.

The 7th series is currently being aired on More 4 on Thursdays at around half 10.  I think we're 3 episodes in.

Right, finally started to watch this having never bothered my arse.  Got all the seasons, and I finished episode 2 last night.  Got to say, it must get better cause it's very boring and entirely predictable.
You bought all the seasons, having never watched it before? I only recently started watching it too, and it's fast becoming my favourite sitcom. Watch out Peep Show!

This weeks was by far the best episode of the season so far (perhaps of all series).  I was in a kink.

When the swan got it I couldn't breathe.

And when he called the bloke he'd killed a prick.

Then at the post killing dinner.  When Larry calls Marty a moron and an Asshole.  :mackems:

I still want a pair of Larry's Dad's glasses.  My lass reckons Justin Timberlake wears them these days.  b****** beat me to it.

I think it's been an excellent series.  Need to watch all the other series' again but I think I've enjoyed it more than any of the others.  I really liked the one that ended with the Broadway show, but this series has cemented it as one of my favourite comedies ever, absolutely love it.

Was starting to get nervous about half-way through the finale that it was going to be a major let down compared to the rest of the season but when they started showing actual Seinfeld footage and the ending came together I thought it was a very fitting and actually quite poignant ending for the season (on top of being hilarious).  Well done Curb.  Looking forward to the new season.

It's just been such a treat for Seinfeld fans. Goes back to the conversation Larry and Jerry had in one of the first episodes: "How will it not be lame?" "We'll do it in a way that won't be lame".

Just a terrific season all the way through. Going to be hard to put all that behind and start again for a new season, but if anyone can it's LD!

I'm sure there'll be another season, that would be no way to end it. This has been one of the best seasons so far imo, right up there with seasons 2 and 4 (although I haven't seen the 1st, 3rd, or 5th season yet!).
Title: Re: Curb your enthusiasm

I found the last episode vastly underwhelming, I must admit.  Dunno whether I might have enjoyed it more if I was a Seinfeld fan - I've got series 1-3 somewhere but haven't watched them yet.  I know Jason Alexander is meant to be Larry David personified in a sitcom, neurotic, ridiculous, etc, but his face and manner get on my tits.

It was a brilliant series, but that finale was nowhere near as good as the best episodes in the series.  I still think it's went up a notch as a whole though.

Title: Re: Curb your enthusiasm

The most annoying thing for me as how blasé she was over the divorce. Larry, yeah, his first instinct would be to just brush over it, joke around etc. But she was just like 'yeah, this is it. Over tomorrow. Hmm.' Just doesn't seem right. Just never found the Cheryl character right. One minute she's overreacting to everything, getting all emotional, then she won't have a reaction in the slightest, then she'll get irritated to easily, just can't see how that character is a good foil. As funny as the episode was as a whole, the beloved c*** episode still irks me. Would you really blame him for that? really?

I was expecting another boner incident or something. I was in tears of laughter, just wasn't expecting it. Surprised they didn't make more of the dad's reaction to him trying to help her tbh.

Same here on the boner thought, the trousers poking out or something.

I don't see what the big reaction was, was it that outrageous? He was only trying to help

Watching it I don't see the big deal. But it's Curb. Was expecting a much bigger deal to be made out of Larry's actions, as always. At the same time, if I was him, would've at least informed the parents meself, like. Imagine just hearing from your daughter that your middle-aged peer invited you in to talk about cookies and then tried to teach you about tampons.

The strength of the scene was having no idea whatsoever what Larry was going to do next. It turned out to be a normal, funny scene, but as it was playing out that first time, you were prepared for him to say anything.

I got that too, didnt know if he was going to do something unacceptable or not. I guess they had to tread pretty carefully though.

Aye. Fair play, clearly what they were going for and it worked. Just when her face dropped, it's like you were waiting for it to turn out he'd done something unintentionally creepy  Then the whole conversation you were just waiting. Fantastically worked scene, like.

Can't believe the hate Cheryl is getting.

She's:

a) a brilliant plot device - adding the contrast against which Larry's social ineptitude is amplified/made funny
b) quite hot
c) excellent at improvising

The whiny/nagging-ness is all part of it.

You're all crazy/bad fans. :)

Immense form. Ridiculous to think the eighth season might be the best season yet - what other show has continued to get better at this stage of its life, especially a comedy - although 7 was a bit iffy in places.

How popular is it in the States? As I can't think of anyone in 'real' life that's seen/liked this. Showed one friend who's pretty much spot on taste as me, and even she was bored by it.

Just how popular is it in the States?

I think you'd be surprised as to how popular it isn't.  To me it's honestly the best comedy on TV but I'd wager a fair percentage of houses don't even get HBO if you look at actual population numbers.  It's fairly popular in my age bracket/income but a lot of people miss out on it.

I would've thought it'd have a strong Seinfeld following. Not a clue though. Wouldn't surprise me if it was under-appreciated though.

When he rounds the corner towards the end of the last episode, in his casual clothes and trainers... I realised just how much of a hero he really is.

When he rounds the corner towards the end of the last episode, in his casual clothes and trainers... I realised just how much of a hero he really is.

The best ad I ever saw for Curb was a picture with everyone looking like him and it simple says "Deep inside you know you're him" which makes the show totally make sense.  That's why the show works so well.  He's so outrageous yet everyone sees themselves in him.  It's the same reason Seinfeld worked so well - the "comedy about nothing" - because everyone saw a piece of themselves in each character.

Well appararently Cheryl gets it in the divorce doesn't she? Not read any spoilers or plans for this season. My main worry is losing other characters. Feel like for all the build up, it's going to be one, maybe two episodes of him in NY and then he'll be back to LA either first or second episode of season 9.

No Mike, you're not alone. Gervais is a t***.

The Office was a work of genius, but it's subsequent success then propelled Gervais firmly up his own arse. Haven't found any of his subsequent stuff particularly amusing, though Extras had one or two moments.

No way, man. Season 7 is one of my contenders for the weakest - which I find a little hesitant about admitting/saying because I don't think there has been a dip yet (unlike virtually every other show I've seen). It's fantastic. I f***ing loved 7, and I think it's one of the weakest! Eight is doing fantastically so far. He's becoming increasingly irreverent

Did anybody else look at the wikipedia bowing etiquette page after?

In extreme cases a kneeling bow is performed, which may be so deep that the forehead touches the floor. There is an extremely complex etiquette surrounding bowing, including the length and depth of bow, and the appropriate response. For example, if the other person maintains his or her bow for longer than expected (generally about two or three seconds), it is polite to bow again, upon which one may receive another bow in return, often leading to an exchange of progressively lighter bows.

Caught up with the last 4 episodes last night and it's been great.  Thought Gervais was excellent in it in episode 6 and that The Bisexual (episode 7) was a total classic.  Particularly the "s*** bow" stuff and any interaction with Leon (stuff like "where's my room?" had me in stitches, I love it how Larry never complains when Leon turns up, lets him stay with him without question and basically treats him like his guru on women issues).

HBO has said that it is "cautiously optimistic" that David will do a ninth season. The network's president of programming, Michael Lombardo, commented, "For the first time ever after this season Larry didn't say 'I never want to do this again'".

9th season, please.

Think it would be easier to imagine than an Entourage film, but still not particularly desirable.

Post by: Tomato Deuce on Wednesday 31 October 2012, 07:33:40 PM
I don't see how either an Entourage or Curb film would work. Entourage because it got so s*** by the end that nobody wants to see them back for more. And Curb because it'd be like making a Seinfeld film. Just doesn't make sense considering the show's format.

Let's get Season 9 rollin' here Larry.

I've just started watching series 8 which I got for xmas. I got the impression it wasn't that great but I'm proper loving it. I think no contemporary show makes me laugh so. I'm 4 in, after watching 3 episodes today, and it's brilliant. Maybe cos I've not watched any Curb in 18months but it really is special.

What worries me is the special features on the bonus material on the Season 8 DVDs.  There's a panel-style discussion with Larry, Cheryl, Jeff and Susie, and there's a question about 'what about if Larry went abroad' and Larry brushes off the idea, saying that if this ever happens, you know it's time to quit, you're out of ideas.  But then there's that last scene of the last ep of season 8... maybe reading too much into this. :)

Quote
David said in December 2014, "I guess, right now, the odds would be against it, probably 6 to 1." He added he also did not anticipate a finale special, saying, "I got so much grief from the Seinfeld finale, which a lot of people intensely disliked, that I no longer feel a need to wrap things up. … I wouldn't say I’m mad about it, but it taught me a lesson that if I ever did another show, I wasn't going to wrap it up."

It's unlikely.

Really sad to hear about Bob Einstein. I've loved watching him on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and only discovered the Super Dave YouTube page within the last year, which collects some of the stunts and sketches from his show in the late 1980s. The payoff never fails to amuse, but it only gets there via the subtlety of his delivery and the momentum provided by his entrances and other preparatory work. These are good examples:

Had never really seen Bob Einstein in anything before watching CYE, but have been watching some clips of Super Dave on YT since his passing.

They all have a long build up, and are fairly simple in terms of the pay-off, but very funny. I particularly like the 'King of the Road' one.

The two episodes of 'Comedians in Cars getting coffee' (Netflix) he did with Jerry Seinfeld are also very good (some bits and that tribute above). Its just an informal chat type thing with JS taking a comedian for coffee/brunch in a classic car, but the stories Einstein tells are great.

Curb was the first thing I ever saw her in, she played Larry's sister-in-law in a few episodes back in 2000.  20 years ago, Jesus.

Sky are launching a new channel, 'Sky Comedy' next month, and the new series of 'Curb' is going to be shown on there.

Hadn't heard anything about that new channel, but they were running promo's last night on Sky Atlantic during The Outsider.

EDIT: Starts on January 29th, on Sky Comedy.

Just started S8 of 'Curb.

Whilst there were some decent episodes and laughs in S1-5, it really seemed to flick a switch from S6, and Larry became even worse, and the start of what he has become now.

Been some brilliant episodes and moments in S6, 7 and so far into 8.

It really feels as though he is free from the shackles of public perception or opinion in Season 10. He is legit making it for himself and his mates; to make himself laugh and have fun on set

He's smirking and laughing at his own jokes on screen more than ever. It's fantastic to see.

I agree entirely but have the exact opposite feeling - I find S1-5 to be so much better than 6-10. He's far too annoying now.
