A birthday is the anniversary of the birth of a person, or figuratively of an institution. Birthdays of people are celebrated in numerous cultures, often with birthday gifts, birthday cards, a birthday party, or a rite of passage.

Many religions celebrate the birth of their founders or religious figures with special holidays (e.g. Christmas, Mawlid, Buddha's Birthday, and Krishna Janmashtami).

There is a distinction between birthday and birthdate: The former, other than February 29, occurs each year (e.g. January 15), while the latter is the exact date a person was born (e.g., January 15, 2001).

In many parts of the world[vague] an individual's birthday is celebrated by a party where a specially made cake, usually decorated with lettering and the person's age, is presented. The cake is traditionally studded with the same number of lit candles as the age of the individual, or a number candle representing their age. The celebrated individual will usually make a silent wish and attempt to blow out the candles in one breath; if successful, a tradition holds that the wish will be granted. In many cultures, the wish must be kept secret or it won't "come true". Presents are bestowed on the individual by the guests appropriate to her/his age. Other birthday activities may include entertainment (sometimes by a hired professional, i.e. a clown, magician, or musician), and a special toast or speech by the birthday celebrant. The last stanza of Patty Hill's and Mildred Hill's famous song, "Good Morning to You" (unofficially titled "Happy Birthday to You") is typically sung by the guests at some point in the proceedings. In some countries a piñata takes the place of a cake.

Not one for birthday celebrations and I originally thought I was going for a meal with my wife in Town which I couldn’t be arsed with but got dragged out to anyway. Glad I did as she and my best mate had arranged a birthday surprise party with some of my dearest and closest friends and family, was overwhelmed by the love shown by them to me. One of my good close friends happens to be a cousin of ON as well ha ha. If Carlsberg did birthdays...

Thanks and it was the Alchemist and then we just went all over in Town. We didn’t end up having a meal everyone was just happy drinking and getting a dirty kebab before home. Was great to see so many people I love all in one place. I’m not one for being lost for words, but I was that evening.

What did you think of the alchemist I haven’t been there yet?

Where else did you visit?

Never mind copper

Nah man...

It was quite lively and it’s the first time I’ve been in that part of Eldon Square for ages, but it looked like it lacked character and just seemed kind of generic. Never sampled the food, but the menu didn’t stand out and grab me if I’m honest. The staff were great though. We had far more fun in the Black Garter which is the first pub I had both my first ever illegal and legal drink in then we went to the pub over the road from there (forgot what it’s called!) and then hit the Big Market and just stayed around there all night/morning. Over 20 close friends and family turned up for me

Sounds good HTT  the Alchemist/Botanist places are pretty contrived but they make really good drinks so I can't begrudge them existing.
