As a relatively newbie to these meet-ups for the Lockwood Cup I cant stress enough to anyone thinking of joining up to play or even just to come along, to do so. It’s free to anyone. I was like that once thinking should I or should I not and I remember Yorkie the first time I played - who by the way, and I don’t mind saying it, is f***ing lush (they all are) - asking me what took me so long and to be honest I never wanted to meet anyone off here in person, that and a few of my own inner issues of anxiety I’d use as excuses to keep my arm down.

But I knew I’d like it as I love playing football and when we lost Jon, who I never met personally like others have, but who I had some kind of relationship with via PMs over the years and of course as fellow main site writers and forum admins, I knew the only way I could say thanks and show my appreciation was to play in his cup, the Lockwood Cup.

My thanks and appreciation of Jon being one of the first members to put his hand up to offer his help with N.O and when I reached out to him and others years and years ago, selfishly at first to beg him not go and join Toontastic because N.O could not lose its best members like Jon at any cost, as long as Jon and others like him were posting, there would always be a forum. We’d be better by having someone like Jon, no great in fact, greater than any other forum. And do you know what, I’ve been proved right!

I initially bribed him with moderator and admin offers and he was OK I’ll help out as best as I can, but in all of that he was honest and said he would still be posting on Toontastic and during some of the more bitter times between the two forums he along with others were valuable to me and helped show me the the most the hilarity of it all and indeed how sad I was taking things so personally and being on the defensive all the time.

But he understood why and never made me feel like I was a prick (which I was or had been) and I will never ever forgot how he would stick up for this place. I will never forget him offering to write for the main site either which he did, or helping out with admin, I don’t think he really wanted to, but he wanted to help and when asked, he didn’t want to just say no or f*** off, that’s not Jon.

Those who only know of Jon’s memory or his name through the Lockwood Cup, he goes way back to the start of this whole place and was a huge positive contributor, a popular poster and underrated as a football section poster in terms of his knowledge and astute thoughts as well.

Others obviously got to meet him and become friends with him in real life and Jon meant more to those people than being just some forum member and me playing in a game created in his honour, means a lot to me because this place means a lot to me, it means a lot to all of us and it meant a lot to Jon who may not post much these days, but as long as he’s a member, there will always be an N.O.

Sorry for the long post and I don’t want to make it personal, but I couldn’t help it.

Anyway, get yourself a long, everyone is great and I’d be happy to sit this out or be on standby as a sub if someone who hasn’t played before wants to come along and play. You don’t have to be like Messi or super fit, the standard is good, but fitness and ability doesn’t come into it, it’s all about getting together and having a kick about for a bit of fun, a bit of a laugh, a bit of banter and for Jon.

Reds better win this again like!

Thanks, I didn’t want to make it personal or emotional, but I couldn’t help it. I remember messaging Jon ages ago when the forum split kicked off again practically begging him not to leave for Toontastic and he was like f***ing hell, you must be desperate, what are you paying :lol:

He once messaged me to ask if I knew any hot Geordie slags desperate enough to go with him when he was coming to Newcastle, with Jon you couldn’t be offended and I always got the impression he was unaware how self deprecating he come across which was endearing.

I’m sure he didn’t need any desperate slags the handsome f***er :D

What I love about this place and those I’ve met from here is how down to earth, friendly and thoroughly normal everyone is and it says a lot about Jon how far and wide people come to play in these games and don’t just turn up and that’s it, people make a weekend of it and next time I’m definitely coming out afterwards for drinks or whatever.

I think the first time I met you Yorkie was picking you up from the Central, I was canny nervous like and helped by Chris being more nervous “they’re your mates, you know them from the internet”

I think my first encounter with LFEE and Jill was a big hug from them which really helped ease any nerves, my next encounter with LFEE though was a vicious assault on my foot, resulting in a broken metatarsal. It was an accident really and anyone who knows me knows if someone is going to get hurt it’s me.

Everyone I’ve met thus far went out of their way to make me feel welcome, yourself, LFEE and Jill of course in particular and Neesy who I’ve met just once and who was a star for us in goal one time.

I even got to meet Lucas’ adorable bairns (his dog’s)  :smitten: and Stifler is as sincere in terms of his soft animated persona as his personality on here is and don’t take that the wrong way Stiffy, to me that means you’re a nice lad and genuine as they come. Although if anyone has watched Lock Stock, where Ashley is concerned Stifler is Soap (scene with the knives) :lol: My partner in defence though the last time, we were like a brick wall together. Maldini and Baresi :D

I of course played like Messi in my first game, 4 goals and too quick for the old timers at the back. I soon returned to my true form though after that for the following games, from Messi to Messed up :D

Looking forward to this one more than any other, hopefully I’ll have had a month off the tabs and be more fitter and help lead us reds to another victory.

Sorry to hear about the passing of a forum member on here, good on you lot for doing something in his memory. Nice words from HTT.

For a while, on and off, I've been trying to sort out some football but get the usual drop outs so put me down as being interested for this. However, I'm currently sporting some cracked ribs and I'm off on my jollies at the start of October but if I get through all that in decent shape I'll come along.

Can also vouch for this. Went to my first one last year bricking it but everyone is proper canny and you have a great laugh playing and over a few pints afterwards in town. Spoke to @Danh1 a few weeks ago and we're both up for a bit of a night out afterwards if others are up for it. It's also an excuse for me to stay in town until the Sunday morning as trains for me are s**** on the Saturday night. Also rather not try and get a train back p*ssed. End up in Wick or somewhere.

I needlessly threw that England thing out there, by the by. I won't be in Toon on the Friday, personally.

Was hoping we might do a meal on the Saturday evening? It being an international break means there's no football-watching activity in the hours following our game, which is a pity.

Last year I went to my first game. Was good putting names to faces. I’m not good by any means, and I was run ragged within 10 minutes. I enjoyed it though.

I went again earlier this year, I stuck to a more rigid position and had an idea of how others liked play, so was able to do a bit better. A small break for HT, and some nice drops of rain at the end helped a bit to keep people fresh.

Trust me, if I with my fitness and ability can enjoy it, then so can anyone else, even if it means subs are used.

Is this definitely happening on the 12th then?

I’m hoping to cram as much footy in as possible between now and this game and desperately hope to have jacked the tabs in by then too.

I played indoors for the first time in years last night with LFEE, very hard work, but a great run out fitness wise and I loosened up my soreness from that earlier this evening with a 7 a side game on the same size pitch we play on at Dunston.

It was an awful game quality wise and I wasn’t very good either, we lost by a couple and I struggled to get up and down the pitch the hour and 20 minutes we ended up playing. I managed to score a goal which I always like to come away with at least having scored one, but I was also personally responsible for my team conceding a few by my poor marking attempts or struggling to get back enough to defend.

I want to be as fit or as close as I was the first time I played in this so I can enjoy it as I’m not enjoying my footy much lately. That’s the aim, anyway!

I can’t wait for the Lockwood Cup though and I’m really looking forward to playing alongside my fellow Reds again against the Blues and hopefully retaining the currently broken trophy I must mend or get replaced :lol:

Aye, surely we're due one now.

Brilliant day with brilliant people. Well done Reds on another deserved victory; loads of good performances. Stifler getting stuck in well  at the back, guided by HTT's captaincy and assuredness; Theregs a constant pest and outlet through the middle (couldn't beat wor Sifu though); Ryan/Spaceman/Dean a threat constantly; Wullie doing the Hodgson Welbeck role well (big compliment) - always finding pockets of space and holding it up; Slim busy, tidy and non-s***-taking; and obviously Cats p*ss with a MOTM performance (sure he gets better every game).

Dan's volley would have been the best ever RedvBlue/Lockwood goal, by the by. f*** me what a strike.

Blues did well. More of the same, really. Loads of good football but average finishing and caught on the break.

Great day though. As always, can't wait for the next one.

You were unplayable really. Anytime I thought I was about to get a challenge in, you and the ball went away from me. I even saw HTT struggle with you. We tried doubling up and at times even that was difficult. I came off so Slim could get into you better. Honestly I think the best we were able to manage was to get you to the pass the ball.

Thought you had a cracking game, Yorkie. Along with Paul, you kept us nicely organised at the back and your fitness levels seemed to be a level above other occasions! But aye without your goals and general quality up front we would have been some way behind, Anth.

Ah thanks guys, thought it was a really high standard and if mine and the blues finishing was a little better could have been a different story. Yorkie, Sewelly and Lfee never stopped running and creating space and thought Ian did really well in the middle.

The second reds goal (I think it was that one anyway) was insane, and if that volley had went in that would have been the best goal I think I’ve seen in 5/7 a side. Ball was behind Dan and the connection he got was so sweet. Zidane esq...

HTT and Stifler you were a nightmare to play against, really well organised and aggressive at the back and closed me down so quickly. Reds had some class attacking players as well that punished us!

Good game though and well played everyone :thup:

I’m sore today ha ha, I have a big lump under my knee and a big red mark/cut -just as well I always wear shin pads. Don’t know what happened there.

I thought I was very poor on the ball at times, leading to two goals for the Blues. Anth I agree with Stiffler, the best way to defend against him was to try and get him to pass otherwise he would skin you. I’ve never been twisted and turned so much in my life.

Slim was like a rash, getting stuck in, up and down the pitch, tackling, passing etc. General all-round display. Stiffler was fitter and economical on the ball and like a wall at times, we just about did enough back there to stem the tide of Blue attacks towards the end where we were under constant pressure.

Ryan and Dean up front for us were great, similar players, but complimented each other well, great runs, finishing and energy. Dr Spaceman was like our Gerrard, goals, leadership, defending, running, tackling. Cats p*ss saved us so many times, I’ve played with and against him for over ten years, it’s not just his shot stopping it’s his coming off his line, agility, use of the hall throwining and kicking out and his communication.

The regulars almost scored a worldy which Sifu tipped onto the bar to save IIRC. Wullie was a calming influence, held it up well, give and go. Just a great performance from my Reds.

The Blues were equally great, Dan a beast at the back and his volley would have graced any game had it went in, great technique and Cats p*ss said he had to be at his bets to keep it out. Nearly snapped his hand ha ha.

Sifu made lots of heat saves as well, Ian W, Matt and LFEE as a combo in defence and midfield were a pain to play against as they could drop back, come into midfield and even get forward.

At one point they were all over us and I won’t lie towards the end I was camped around our box and was just hoping to cling on for the win, which we did.

Great game, great football, great goals, great people, great meet up and a great occasion in memory of Jon.

Love yous all :D

Yorkie you were everywhere, your fitness is superb compared to first time I played (not that it was bad), where as mine is shocking right now ha ha! I enjoy playing at the back, but it’s forced on me due to poor fitness, I was itching to go up front and get a goal towards the end as I miss playing up front. Hopefully by the next match in March my fitness will be better and I can play my natural game up top. I was relieved when the game was finished. I can barely walk right now and I’m just about to head off to Durham for my 5 year old’s match!

Have to say everyone of my Reds never stopped working hard for the team, covering, putting in blocks and communicating throughout. We were all Captains on the day and the standard of play from both teams was a joy to watch at times.

I remember Neesy you were on my team once in goal? You made some canny saves!

Not necessarily a NUFC match but if so then fine. It’s just nice for those who make a day and night of it to have a bit footy to watch afterwards and chat. For example if Marko decides to come all the way from Croatia would be nice for a few people to be out for the day and have something to watch.

Outdoor football has already started in U.K. with even the councils opening up their outdoor facilities last week of August.

If the latter then it’s a case of Reds (since Ryan) being stronger by a bit of a margin without Heron last 2 games and this time blues won’t be as strong. Would love to prove you wrong of course being a blue :lol:

@Dr.Spaceman (Red)
@Heron (Red)
@AyeDubbleYoo (Blue)
@Yorkie  (Blue)

@neesy111  (Red)
@Greg  (Blue)
@Danh1  (Blue)
@Stifleaay plus mate (2x Red)
@Ryan  (Red)
@Slim (Red)

TBC but unlikely @M4  (Blue)

So 7 Blue and 10 Red unless I’ve guessed previous allegiances incorrectly.

Early days but I still maintain we will need a shuffle as Red probably got the 4 strongest players at least. Hopefully we get 9 each so 2 rotating subs each and plenty of game time for everyone.

Speaking of which I’ve booked the pitch for 90mins 10:00-11:30 like last time we can have it 10-11 or 10:30-11:30 if you only want an hour but with subs and halftime and people not being ready I always think it’s worth the extra 30mins. Baring in mind if we still maintain 9 each then it gives everyone that bit more playing time even if we turn up organised :lol: Works out usual £5-6 each.

Can someone update the thread name with confirmed time please. Hopefully everyone can get there for 9:50ish to do some stretches :lol:

First post in nearly two years. Teaching really does eat up all your time.

There's a possibility I can play in this. My son has just started at Northumbria so the wife is ok with trips up to check on him. He'd probably like to play too (even if I don't make it).

Few things to sort out and obviously Covid may f*** with my plans, but it is certainly possible.

Squads confirmed...

Reds:

Crisp Packet
@HTT
@Ryan
@Dr.Spaceman
@neesy111
@Slim
@Wullie
@Stifleaay -mate

Blues:

@Yorkie
@Greg
@AyeDubbleYoo
@ponsaelius
@Heron
@SimplyAnth
@Danh1
@LFEE

40mins each way. 10mins HT. 7v7 so 10mins off pitch for everyone in theory however...

Blues are swapping keepers so whoever is going in goal needs to decide when whereas Reds if sticking with a permanent keeper will have different timings technically (so agree the orders so no time wasted when switching but would make it easier if Chris come off pitch for 10mins so both teams are swapping every 10mins)

26-4 to the Reds today, Ryan, Dean and Andy lethal up front, Slim a midfield general, Mandoon everywhere and great communication at the back when he dropped back, me a colossus at the back as usual and two left footed goals (:lol:), Cat’s p*ss in goal gave a pen away which Greg put away with aplomb, but when called on to make vital saves he was superb, Simon a young sexier Lothar Matthäus. Great game, great fun, great bunch of people, Reds just, well, brilliant. Some lovely football mind by both teams, others who haven’t played from the forum, seriously, sign up, come along, play, it’s GREAT. Blues need to splash the cash and buy big though next transfer window :lol:

Was genuinely lovely seeing everyone today. Shame it wasn’t under more sociable circumstances. Thank you all for for turning up and making it relatively easy to organise. Enjoyed the post match drink and chat too despite the low numbers.

Feel bad for those forced to sit it out due to Covid fears and also our world beating T&T system. You were all a genuine miss to the occasion.

Will look to do a game in Easter if you are all happy having me organise again. Without wanting to be proved right I think we can all agree now it’s time for a reboot with the teams as over the last 3 years this result has been coming especially with who was unavailable for the Blues this year. Will discuss with @Yorkie over the coming months a fair system but feel free to voice any ideas.

Got an issue with my phone so unable to respond further to the WhatsApp group. Hopefully sorted tomorrow.

Safe journey home, especially those who have travelled so far.

Enjoyed it despite the massacre. Thought Blues were OK up to a point, it just became clear the way the game was going quite early :lol:

Had slight hamstring tightness so had to go in goal, that was probably worth about 7 goals.

Great to see everyone, look after yourselves.

Also yeah NFL style draft with the reds and blue GM's.  1st, 2nd round picks etc probably best way

I do think the ball was bit on the heavy side.  Also sure me megging Heron from kick off probably set the tone ;)

Just as well for blues sake, would have been an even bigger massacre...

Determined to be much fitter for the next one :thup:
