Not sure he's got a thread. Never saw it if so. Think that earns him one to be honest. Really pleased for him.

Edit: f*** me. Merge it with the other one

And yeah, I'm delighted he got a full game and goal in the FA Cup for us.  He should cherish this evening.

Not sure we'll retain him beyond the summer, but probably deserved a game based on his U23 form and the goal was well taken. Good on him.

Technically no, but we scored 4 goals and won a FA cup game so we're whizzing off our collective nuts.

That's how I saw it, but he probably wasn't helped by Joselu who didn't hold the ball up at all.

Why is he being written off as a departure in summer? Is his contract up/refused to sign a new one?

I've seen two stiffs matches this season and the kids who really stood out were Roberts, Woodman, S Longstaff, Sorensen and Adam Wilson. Looks like we have a decent coach in Ben Dawson as well.

Would love for us to secure safety with two or three games to go so we can blood these fellas in this season. Conversely if we go down with two or three games to go we can start them all in preparation for life in the championship. Either way they need some serious game time.

How is it great? Aye it's great we have had no investment and the squad is in a s*** state that we have to play youngsters who are never going to be premier league level. Fantastic isn't it. Ashley wins again when fans are buzzing that the only back up players we have are kids despite them never going to make the required level

Good luck to him. Seems such a cliche but needs a bit of time playing first team football to build up the physicality required to cope at our level. At the very least hope it’s gives him a good grounding so he has a career as a pro.

In other news my wife glanced over as I typed this and thought the subject title was ‘Cat Robots’, so there’s that.

There's a bunch of players around the same age who have been at the club for a long time but never really broke through. Sterry, Roberts, Barlasar, Longstaff (who is just now getting a game). Can't see many of them sticking around...

I live in Colchester. They play decent football for the level which is surprising considering the ground is a giant refrigerator. Never been to a colder place.

But ultimately s*** at producing s*** players for us which is kind of the whole point of having one, or should be.

It’s a step in the right direction though. I’d rather the Lower leagues be littered with our former youth players than seeing none at all. It’s canny to keep an eye out for them if nothing else.

I think Longstaff’s success presents the stronger argument for giving Roberts a shot. Beyond Mbabu, have any of our recent former youngsters amounted to much? Armstrong and Toney are playing in League One, Adam Campbell in League Two. Lubo Satka broke into the Slovak national team last year, I guess that counts for something.

I’m not saying they have to be premiership quality, but consider a decent championship player can cost £10m these days we probably let our youth go too soon.

Mbabu is the standout, but abeid, satka, Armstrong, kadar could have done a job filling in gaps or out on loan ready to sell at a good profit to buy a squad player later down the line. Gillihead and Tonry doing well at league one as well. Just takes half a good season out on loan in the championship and a player is worth a decent edge around that age.

Potential is the hardest thing to judge in football unless it’s glaringly obvious. Suppose we can’t keep them all.

If they can get this loan manager appointment right, it will go a long way towards getting the most out of our academy players, and therefore getting a better sense of whether they are going to "make it" or not.

I'm curious whose idea the loan manager was. Can see it appealing to Ashley's greed, but I wouldn't have thought he'd be the origin of the idea - and if I believe it was Rafa's idea, then I might start thinking Rafa's staying, and I'm not ready for that kind of heartbreak, so it obviously wasn't Rafa's idea.
