Steve McClaren & Beardsley's jokes are absolutely the best things about it, but there's some other cracking stuff in there like Gangs etc.

I love it because it feels like a 'modern' throwback to daft-as-s**** comedy. Andy isn't particularly funny, for me, but he's good at bouncing conversation off Bob which often leads to my biggest laughs during the show.

I'd be interested to know how it translates abroad as it's really f***ing niche at times.
Title: Re: Athletico Mince
Post by: joeyt on Thursday 13 September 2018, 07:45:45 PM
Yeah I think it was mentioned in the past that Bob's humour probably doesn't translate well.

The first 10 episodes of Athletico Mince are alright but they're still searching for gold in them but after that it's just gold all the way from Bob

It all depends, as I in general have enjoyed both British stand-up comedians, sitcoms and similar in the past. But I'm sure there's something lost in translation here though as there's people liking this s*** that I in general seem to have similar tastes to based on comments in other threads. For me, this is just someone blabbering on about s*** and making up personalities/stories around people where those personalities/stories aren't even close to fitting. Squires, as an example, does a similar thing but he tends to nail it (for me). However the formats are very different, and a two frame gag from Squires is easier to nail than trying to maintain a story-gag for far too long like these guys do. Guess the difference here could be in general storytelling between Brits compared to general storytelling between other cultures.

An example from my own experience is the time when everyone was raving about "The Fun Bus", listened to it, and came out of the experience questioning existence due to the extreme boredom it caused. Then there was the "Gangs of the PL" people were raving about, listened to it, and it was just a long, long story about fictional personalities not doing anything at all of note in a public toilet.

Admittedly I've not listened to anything else after those two experiences, because jesus christ, nothing happened.

I think a lot of it is knowing Bob Mortimer just doesn’t take himself seriously at all. There’s just something about him. If pretty much anyone else did a podcast like that it wouldn’t work. I mean if I just loaded a random youtube clip up and someone else was putting daft voices on pretending to be Peter Beardsley I’d think it was absolutely s****

FWIW I don’t think it really works in clip form either like, even being a fan of Bob

The songs and daft stories are pretty rubbish and nonsensical but they’re meant to be as the whole point of the podcast is him and the Get in the Sea guy just talking s****. I don’t think they’re written to go viral.

"For me, this is just someone blabbering on about s*** and making up personalities/stories around people where those personalities/stories aren't even close to fitting."

Think this line from Kaiz is key. As that's where the joy of Mince comes from for me the bizarre surreal caricatures rather than impressions. The absurdist elements are what does it for me. There's no grounding in Beardos wife loving boilers, but by God is it funny.

Completely get how it's marmite though and how it won't resonate with people but I bloody love it. My parents hated Vic & Bob but I loved them growing up.

I completely get why people wouldn't find it funny, particularly non-Brits. I bloody love Bob, though.

I know enough Brits that don't 'get' Vic and/or Bob, let alone abroad. I reckon Would I Lie To You would actually be a great starting point to enjoy Bob if you didn't like him before. There's a reason someone's put together a compilation of pretty much every one of his appearances on there.

Bob is great. What I think makes him great is that sense of anger that underpins much of what he does. All too often anger in comedy manifests as a trite assault on some political figurehead (c.f. every panel show on tv). However, with Bob the attack isn't against the symptom (the political) but the ground of the genesis of these symptoms - the societies in which they flourish. Underneath his work you find a constant despair at the pettiness, vanity, and avarice that plagues the human condition.

The psychoanalyst Lacan called this standpoint the discourse of analyst, the ability to see beyond the system by which ephemeral meaning is created and assigned by society. Occupying the position of the analyst is characterised by a cruel, cynical  type of humour that often borders on condescension, and a sort of disdain for the desires of others (the structure of which the analyst has some insight into, though they remain opaque for others), whenever they are made explicit. I think you can see this in a lot of Bob’s work, and particularly in Mince.

Yeah saw that one but that's the worst one imo. At least two better ones which seem to have been taken down.

This week's episode was a f***ing tour de force but the Sean Dyche rap/song might be the funniest thing I've ever heard. Beardsley as well was devastating. Crime Files is the best new sketch they have come up with as well.

It's just excellent, I'm all about the meat restaurant now though, it's vile

I was Slaughter's but now Crime Files is just exquisite. Beardo was gone too long and it was a triumphant return.

But the Dyche song, my word........

Club Parsnips, exclusive podcasts and early release of the main pod. The free is still there and glorious.

Most importantly there's an extra podcast each month.  It's only a couple of quid a month, don't mind paying at all seeing as how much it's made me laugh.

Last few episodes of this have been fantastic

  Love the Talksport bit, and the nonsense potter.

I'd highly recommend subscribing, the last one had a Crimefiles with Woy Hodgson and Jim White interviewing Michael Owen.

If you subscribe, where do you get the extra podcasts? Presume it's not through Spotify/Apple?

Couldn't listen to that c*** Dawson. Only manage to put up with him because of the excellence of Mortimer on Mince.

Any reason why Andy Dawson has deleted his Twitter? ???

He seems a bit emotional on it, bites a lot. Probably just got fed up of the arseholes.

Dawson and Twitter don't go to well. He's a staunchly hard left Corbyn supporter from what I gather, he was probably getting a bit of s***. That and he has notoriously thin skin.

Not sure about that mind.

Either way the Mackems absewlewtly despise him for making limited success of himself instead of being very angry and wanting South Shields FC to go bust.

I've never heard him in anything except Mince, and he's pretty good.

Even when Bob slags off Sunderland he takes it fairly well.
