Seems a lot of money is wanted for a player plying his trade in a pretty poor standard league - and apart from Dempsey (excluding goalkeepers) none have been a big hit especially for that kind of money.

McBride was good.

As was Landon Donovan for the brief time he was here.

Claudio Reyna’s time was cut short by injuries but he clearly had what it took to play in the PL. Same with Stu Holden.

Geoff Cameron was a competent defender for Stoke for a few years.

I’ll go to the grave defending Yedlin as a PL-quality fullback.

There really haven’t been a ton of players to make the jump from MLS tbh

Thing is they were ok the names being mentioned but not a massive success which when your paying the reported 24 - 30 million for is what would be required

Only for Newcastle, if we are being honest, though. This club's competitors are spending 20+ million on reserves and young players. Leicester spent 75% of Newcastle's transfer record for a 25 year old that would exclusively be their reserve keeper.

Also a good point, we’ve essentially priced ourselves out of the European market.

Not sure any clubs that are our direct competitors are spending £20m+ on reserves like.  But I do agree that £25m doesn't equal instant great in todays market, nowhere near.  I mean when you think about it we spent 75% of our transfer record on a reserve as well (Murphey).  You've got to start at £20m+ these days just to get a good player (unless you strike gold like for someone like Fernandez of course).

Christ, 10 years ago it was nearly 2 dollars to the pound.

Those were the days like!

He’ll only be record signing because of the weak pound. $30m in 2005 wouldn’t have afforded Michael Owen.

doubt it, even back then £17m wouldn’t have got you $30m.

Atlanta are in less of a position then they make out. In the MLS you are only allowed so many Designated players (players who earn over the salary cap and are international players). Atlanta already have a deal signed to sign another designated player with more rumoured to follow. Their forwards is also a designated player, so Almiron pretty much has to be sold. It’s also unclear who has control over the sale as well, I’m pretty sure the MLS has the right to sell a player behind the clubs back. This happened somewhat with Defoe’s move from Toronto to Sunderland. Basically the league wanted to sell Defoe, Toronto kicked up a fuss, in the end Toronto settled for getting Altidore, some money, and a draft pick for Defoe, if they were in charge though they wouldn’t have sold him.

Well that sounds interesting. Can you link to some source explaining a bit more?

MLS is a "single entity" model. It owns players contracts and can negotiate their sale. They also have negotiated purchase of players like Michael Bradley, and basically assigned them to the team they want them to go to, even though there is some official claim process that is supposed to make it fair.

So Atlanta tell us to bid with a figure starting with a 3  i.e. $30m.  So we bid $28m.  Classic we tried but couldn't get it over the line !!!

Any normal club that bid would be fine, because if they really are holding out for that they’d go back up...us on the other hand....

Who do you think the next player we'll be linked with without foundation?

Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe?

The reality is that we'll end up one or two past-it cloggers like Kuqi or Colback and a couple of youngsters who did some step overs once, but in reality are fucking shit.

It's the only way...
