I always loved Craven Cottage. For ages, that has been my favourite English away trip.

Nice old ground in a great settings, near to enough really good pubs you can avoid the plastic glass, beer throwing, singing pre-match venues if you want.

Birmingham definitely exceeds expectations. I went there sort of apprehensively because of its reputation and when I first got there I thought it was around about what I expected. Then suddenly...a beautiful canal in the middle of the city! Lovely lit up buildings and almost installation art under bypasses. I really liked the place and would definitely go back.

You're probably talking about the gas st basin -> brindley place section. Currently they're doing up the NIA (arena), making it bigger and giving it a glass frontage over the canals:

That's the one! I was sat at that pub before going in the NIC. It wasn't something I've ever experienced in Britain before, it was lovely.

Isn't a there a strong movement afoot to not get rid of these?

Over here in the US most major (smart) cities have historic boards who protect these and districts greatly. If you can't build within original buildings and retrofit - then you have to build to spec to make it look as authentic as ever. Many of my company's hotels are located in these districts.

There's been a few done in Newcastle-Gateshead (Westgate road building and Get-Carter car park both knocked down) but money is tight nowadays.  The rules are stupid, the old odeon is a listed building and in a prime spot for a massive redevelopment and it's been sitting derelict for 10 years now.

Is that the main Odeon in the centre of Newcastle? Used to go there a lot in the late 1980s. There and the Tyneside Cinema (which I hope is still operating).

Aye, been shut for almost a decade now.  Tyneside Cinema is still there and doing really well.

(Even further off topic) I'm off to that town hall for the first time this Sunday after a session in probably the best pub in Brum (The Wellington)

If you like proper beer, you need to go for a few in the Post Office Vaults and the Pure Bar, both of which are pretty much round the corner from the Wellington.

I absolutely love the Wellington. Not been for ages, think the Post Office had just opened but didn't get the chance to pop in. Will put that right next time round.

One of my favorite threads yet.

Would anyone here (ideal world) be up for a new stadium to be built for Newcastle? Or would you rather significant money put in to modernize / add seats, and maybe do some exterior facade work? I know the majority will probably say the latter, but just wanted some opinions.

It's positioned perfectly, looks absolutely majestic in the middle of the city. Strong no for a new stadium.

When I was having a look around at the stadiums in England - it was quite cool seeing how awesomely positioned in city-centre our ground is. Fuck sake, if someone like John Henry or Mansour owned us? The entire area around it would have been transformed as much as they could - hotels, shopping, Newcastle United superstore, etc. The location of St James' Park in city centre would have a developer's mouth watering imo.

The problem is it's severely restricted by the listed Halls of Residence behind the East Stand which is why that side has never been developed.  Barring extending the Gallowgate (which isn't very cost-effective), St James' is at full capacity.

old and new Yankee stadium

Unfortunately, the old Yankee stadium is now this (although at least it's still ball fields)...

If you're looking for stadiums close to one another, it's tough to beat the setup in Philadelphia.

And yes, they have had events at the same time in multiple venues. Unfortunately the arena in the top left has been demolished in favor of an entertainment facility (bars, restaurants, etc.) Bottom left is NBA/NHL, bottom right is NFL, and top right is baseball.

:pilko:

It's been replaced by a massive bar. How is this unfortunate?

I know it was old, decrepit, unneeded, and probably unsafe but The Spectrum was an incredible building. 18k capacity, but felt like half that. A great place for concerts and the bands felt it was special too - always quality shows there. Similar to MSG in that regard.

Same with Notts County and Nottingham Forest.

And Trent Bridge.

 One of my favourite cities in the UK, you get a similar feeling when you're on the ground too. Going along the bridge (seen in that photo) and seeing them all just one by one essentially in front of you is fucking class IMO.

 Love Nottingham. Have a yearly outing there with work, always a good night. Was at Trent Bridge for the first time in July and was very impressed. Having all three stadiums within throwing distance of each other is awesome. Hope Forest come up!

The one good thing with England missing out on 2018 was it stopped Forest from building a new stadium in Clifton which is a horrible area. There was talk last year that Forest might build one on a brownfield site closer to the City Centre. It would be on London Road which is the road that you see there (includes the bridge). Opposite Hooters so it would only be a 5-6 minute walk from the train station.

I love Seattle's stadium, look at the crowd in that photo, do they really fill out for real football games ? The crowd there in seattle for the handoval games are really passionate, really tough place to go for opposition teams.

Not football but an absolutely stunning setting in Dharamshala, India. England and India played an ODI there in early 2013.
