And yet he still gets criticised. Sometimes rightly, but more often than not wrongly.

He looked a class above in the first half today, faded a bit in the second but did all he had to do, good performance.

Said it before. If he’s facing the right way he’s great to have in your team when you have possession. If he’s facing his own goal we are defending, he’s not good to have in the team.

Some games he’ll be suited to having on, others he won’t.

Shelvey not perfect. Has flaws, I'm not naïve.

However 5 wins, 1 draw with City, 1 loss from 7 games when he's been playing recently. West Ham win he was tremendous for 60 mins.

People have been crying out for Shelvey to be dropped in favour of the Longstaffs - well I’ve not seen us put in a weaker central midfield display for years than today. Man Utd were there for the taking and we’ve made them look like vintage Barcelona.

Since Bruce hates Ki, Shelvey has to play. There's no one else who wants the ball.

Shelvey could’ve played this game no problem. This was Bruce’s attempt at keeping the squad fresh over the festive period - basically surrendering to Man Utd by changing the entire central midfield.

Not surprised to see a few ‘fans’ finding a reason to criticise Shelvey in all this though. Yawn!

If he was going to rest anyone it should have been almiron (who covers the most ground) especially with maximum injured.  Be interesting to see if he risks Lejeune playing all Christmas too

This 5 3 2 doesnt work.  Shelvey looked crap in it at the start of the season and Longstaff did today.  You end up either getting murdered out wide or the 1 in midfield gets over ran

Fuck off man, they are meant to be professional athletes. It’s not like Shelvey exactly exerts his absolute all every game either, the opposite in fact. If he can’t physically and or mentally play 2 games in quick succession at the tempo he plays at when he does play, he may as well jack it now.

Premier League level football or not, players of a pro standard should be fit enough to play in quick succession especially the likes of Shelvey. A player who in particular, given his age, position and style of play, should be at the peak of fitness in order to suffer least at this time of year.

And let’s be honest, these games don’t exactly come around every other day or two every week do they. I’ve never bought the arguments that this time of year demands too much from players, elite or otherwise. It’s a convenient excuse for players and managers to use to drop out of games or blame poor results/performances on. And those managers/clubs that do, that’s why you have a squad of players.

There is no excuse full stop!
