Sibierski given Premier targetNov 10 2006

Antoine Sibierski is determined to start replicating his cup heroics on the Premiership stage after admitting Shola Ameobi's misfortune has given him the chance to establish himself as a regular in Newcastle colours.

Ameobi's long-standing hip problems look to have brought his campaign to a premature end and, given the lack of height in the club's attacking ranks, the importance of Sibierski to the Gallowgate cause has increased markedly.

Although much maligned when he arrived in the North-East on a free transfer this summer, the Frenchman has made some crucial contributions and has so far matched the goal total of Obafemi Martins, a £10m signing from Inter Milan.

Having started just five first-team fixtures, Sibierski scored for the third time at Vicarage Road this week to help Glenn Roeder's side reach the quarter finals of the Carling Cup; and with all of his goals having come in cup competitions, the 32-year-old knows it is time to break his Premiership duck.

"People have said that I'm a cup specialist but that is not enough, I need to score goals in the Premier League," admitted a player who is keen to face former club Manchester City.

"The cup goals have been important ones but those games have gone now and I know how important it is to get started in the league. We have not scored many in our recent matches.

"But I'm hoping to put it right. I have a positive mentality that I take into games and, because I enjoy it so much, I am sure that when I play in the Premier League the goals will come."

Sibierski, who struck after two minutes at Watford on Tuesday evening, has scored decisive goals against Fenerbahce and Levadia Tallinn in the Uefa Cup since his arrival from the City of Manchester Stadium this summer.

He has started just once in the league, that a short-lived experience as injury curtailed his participation at Middlesbrough last month, but with Ameobi's problems having finally caught up with him, Sibierski is hoping the time has come for him to get a run in the team.

"This is a big chance for me - I really believe that," he said. "But talking about it is not enough. I have got to prove it. I need to start games, I need to play and if I do that, I think that I will score goals.

"I love playing for Newcastle, I come into training every day with a smile on my face and I enjoy everything I do here; but I will enjoy it even more if I start to score some goals in the Premiership."

Although Roeder had hoped Ameobi would be able to soldier on until the New Year, the 25-year-old has not been involved in the club's last five first-team fixtures after his troubles intensified.

The striker will undergo an operation at the renowned Colorado clinic of Dr Richard Steadman and he is not expected to play again this season.

"The problem we're having is that although he is relatively pain-free, his mobility in the hip is almost grinding to a halt," said Roeder. "The hip joint is starting to become stuck and it needs unsticking. The only way to do that is to have an operation.

"This is going to be six months. As and when he has the operation, that's him out for the season. But we always knew that was the case.

"I wouldn't put a player's career in jeopardy, he's still a young player, and it would be wrong to ask him to play beyond the call of duty, and we are there now.

"That's why we tried to get him through to January so we could maybe get someone in on loan. That's not going to happen now."

So let's see....back in August they knew Shola would be knackered, Owen out all season, Rossi ( a raw, unproven young talent ) on loan poss till Crimbo, Sibieski filling in.....and the plan IS/WAS to get another loan in......jesus wept TBH   :wullie:
