Blatantly corrupt too. Ruins so much of everything around the WC. The viewing pleasure, especially. Gone are the days of watching the games outside on a big screen in the warm weather. Urgh.

Neebody cared about corruptness when Germany did it for the 2006 World Cup

do you believe the two are remotely comparable man?

Is there a difference between corruption and corruption?

I think the World Cup in Qatar is a bit bad due to the fact that it's a small country with no history in the sport and feel other would be able to probably host a more interesting event. But evidence seems to suggest that both countries won their bids with help of bribes.

it's a difference of perception as you rightly point out, i've no doubt that most of the world cup awards have been down to corruption on some level however awarding it to a nation like germany at least displays a shred of credibility to the decision for the reasons you state

even russia could probably be justified on some level given the size of the place despite it's shit football

qatar was just laughably corrupt rather than just corrupt really, that's my issue with it, and absolute insult to everyone

The Qatar 2022 World Cup bid team ran a secret campaign in 2010 to sabotage competing host bids, according to a report published by the Sunday Times.

The paper claims to have seen leaked documents that show the Qatari bid team employed a US PR firm and ex-CIA agents to smear its rivals - mainly the United States and Australia.

The alleged aim was to create propaganda to give the impression that a World Cup would not be supported domestically. The Qatar tournament organisers deny the allegations.

Such a campaign alleged by the Sunday Times would have broken Fifa's bidding rules.

Kuwait currently sanctioned by FIFA btw, what a fucking mess.

Would assume neither Oman nor Kuwait would participate. Much like Canada shouldn’t have rights too for the needless 3 team 2026 jamboree.

Let’s have the World Cup hosted in every country and then the winner is chosen by lopping a head off a chicken and throwing it onto a world map and playing a kazoo for the dancing headless chicken until it flops down on a country and that country wins but FIFA gets billions of dollars.

The qualification for 2026 hadn’t been sorted and they are discussing giving all 3 nations an automatic spot.

The state of Qatar secretly offered $400m to Fifa just 21 days before world football’s governing body controversially decided that the 2022 World Cup would be held in the tiny desert country, leaked documents have revealed.

The files, seen by The Sunday Times, show that executives from the Qatari state-run broadcaster Al Jazeera signed a television contract making the huge offer as the bidding campaigns to host the World Cup were reaching a climax.

The contract included an unprecedented success fee of $100m that would be paid into a designated Fifa account only if Qatar was successful in it bid to host the 2022 World Cup.
