I thought it was hilarious the lengths the highschool teacher went to in creating a Halloween themed disco like. He really took the project to heart, it must have cost the school millions.

You Were Never Really Here.

10 on 10. Excellent, heartily recommend a cinema trek while it's still playing for the next couple of weeks. Great central performance from Joaquin, great use of sound and it captures the best elements of films like Leon, Drive, Ghost Dog, Narc, The Killing of a Sacred Deer...others, and Lynne Ramsay's previous films (in particular Morvern Callar). It's all about the small details, meticulous.

The shape of Water.

Totally unoriginal but beautiful all the same. I never normally pay attention to the Oscars, but I was somehow aware that this had been commended for it's music, and within 10 mins I was nodding my approval.

Visually stunning, but the the film as a whole is a wholly unsatisfying watch.

Manson Family Vacation. Oddly brilliant.

Baby Driver - 4/10 - all style over substance. 3 of the marks were for the soundtrack, the movie itself was a dog.

It's an Edgar Wright film no? It's all style over substance.

Are you saying all of Edgar Wright's films are style over substance? That's clearly rubbish. SOTD and Hot Fuzz are brilliantly written, and it's an added bonus that they're stylistically and technically a massive step up from your average comedy/drama.
Before that why didn't the Wigan fans just walk the the Stewart's, the Stewart's only went up to the touchline, their was a big gap between the end of the Stewart's and the stand they could have walked through.
God man replacement's don't have to 100% of best to 100% of a replacement.

I suppose it depends what you class as substance. Wright's films, to me, are generally visually good and amusing but that's it. They have no 'substance' as much as I like them.

I think that's harsh certainly in terms of the first two in the Cornetto trilogy. I've not seen Scott Pilgrim or Baby Driver mind, they both looked irritating as f*** from the trailers.

Again, it depends heavily on what you might consider substance. He's produced some funny, good looking s*** but I can't apply substance to it myself.

I thought it had some good moments at the time, but I'd be surprised if it's aged well.

Scott Pilgrim was brilliant imo.

I loved it as well. Canny surprised that it wasn't more popular.

I didn't like The World's End that much and I haven't seen Baby Driver, but I've really liked everything else he's done. Spaced is still the best thing he'll ever have an association with for me.

Yeah, in the same boat with his other films too. SOTD and Hot Fuzz were really entertaining, World's End wasn't great and don't really fancy Baby Driver.

Annihilation. 7. Good, slow burn with plenty of unnerving shots/sequences, some of the CG was poor however. Reminded me of The Last of Us and people are also comparing it to Under the Skin.

Watched this last night, absolutely loved it. Wouldn't agree that the CGI was poor, maybe the alligator wasn't the most convincing, but it's excusable for this type of budget. Most of the time, it looked bloody gorgeous IMO.

Sign me up too. Terrific movie.

Also, I'm happy to think that style can have substance in of itself.
