Everton are doing exactly what Liverpool did between 2011-15. Buy bottom half players for inflated fees and wages in the hope of bridging the Gap to top 4 . But in reality all you end up with is mostly below average players on huge wages and become Deadwood in a season or two. IIRC Wenger as usual bulked at the asking price £12mil for Alonso and ended their interest in him.So luckily for us Rafa decided to keep Alonso and Barry transfer fell though. It was ridiculous and wierd on so many levels. Was to raise funds no? That's what Rafa has said previously. Barry would have costed more than Alonso though. Pretty sure in an interview Rafa says people used to question why he wanted to sell Alonso and he said he didn't want to sell him.but he had no money to spend to had to raise funds. That was next season I think.When we sold Alonso for 30mil to Madrid.
