Changing ISP
« on: Thursday 26 August 2010, 03:16:16 PM »
Long story short, I changed ISP because Orange were being arses with a cap on my connection. It changed to Virgin today but still doesn't feel as fast as it used to. I.e. struggling with youtubes etc.

Any idea how long it takes to hit peak?

Assuming you're on the fibre/coax network there shouldn't be any profiling period IIRC. Should be at full speed already.

Any idea how I find out what network I'm on?

The connection now keeps dropping too... :undecided:

ADSL....

You didn't do your research, Virgin cap their peak time traffic as well!  Also seem's the line might be a problem!

Try an BT I-Plate for your wall socket.  (Buy off e-Bay and not BT (how the fuckers get away charging £85 for something that's £5 on ebay is a joke)).  It should improve the connection a little.

Edit: I see they've seen sense, now it's £8.50 but it was £85 when they first announced it a few years back.  Can speed up connection by 1.5 MBps

It was never, ever £85 neesy, even from BT themselves.

Anyway, a filtered faceplate is a good idea but it won't sort out dropped connections. If you're really on ADSL Kez, then wait a few days to see if it settles down.

My Virgin connection is faster than owt else anyone I know has, I suppose the network is designed for that as opposed to an archaic network that BT uses.

All getting updated from this year on anyway (apparently).

Virgin is the best for speed and reliability, but they are throttling badly during peak times (if your not on the super super fast connection).  Also they are monitoring heavily what you download, which I don't like.

Aye, Sky have been decent with us. Were suppose to have up to 20mb like, but I know its impossible due to how s*** the BT lines are around here, so I'm surprised we're getting 10mb. No download limits, no throttle during peak time. The only incident I can remember is during the early days when SKY banned Xbox/PSN ports due to 'high traffic', but soon realised what they were and no issue since.

I think the message here is to avoid BT if you can.

Anyone here use plusnet?
I asked for a Sprite in my local Conservative club.

I was given a small green vegetable.

We use them for backhaul. Reliable, but then it's a business connection. No idea on how they rate from a CS point of view, but they have extension user forums at http://community.plus.net/forum/ and http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/plusnet.html.

My broadband speed with them is horrendously slow, though apparently this is the norm over the first 10 days.

Well, not really. Over the first ten days or so an ADSL connection is training the line; finding the highest reliable sync speed. If it's still gash after that then get in touch with them.
