I'll use this post to rate the recommendations.

Kap Bambino seem very irritating at first listen, although I get the impression they could win me round if I was in the right mood - however I probably won't ever give them the chance. Basically, they remind me of Pilko in every single way.

Caribou - seems very pleasent, ambient sort of music. Too early to say whether it excites me or not but would certainly be good backing music for my book on the morning commute. Good start, Icarus.

Why? Seem OK but not really what I'm after and a little bit dull in context. Might go back to them at a later date when I'm in a different mood.

I've tried this before, but I'm always up for finding some new music in a genre I still know very little about. I've been listening to a fair bit of electro/dance recently with favourites including Crystal Castles, Justice, SMD, Deadmau5, the Field, Boys Noize, Leftfield, the Prodge and recently Four Tet - what should I go for next?

Try Para One. And Audion - his album Suckfish is exceptional and similar to some of the artists you mention.

I fancy watching a new film that I'll love. I havent watched an arty/philosophical/foreign type of film for a while.

Along the lines of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I [heart] Huckabees, Amelie, Goodbye Lenin!, The Lives of Others, Lost in Translation, Three Colours Blue.

It keeps making me fall asleep. Not because it's boring. I actually have no idea. I start watching it and then wake up a few hours later. Its bizarre. Cheers for the recommendation though, any others?

Let the right one in, but you've probably seen it? I can't recall if it was you who was going on about it in the film thread.

And how can you fall asleep watching Pan's Labyrinth, man? It's so hauntingly beautiful :weep:

House of Flying Daggers could be a decent shout as well depending on your mood.

Try that new Giamatti film, Cold Souls.

As for the mashup stuff, if you like Sufjan Stevens, try this: http://www.illinoize.biz/

Have you seen Science of Sleep?  Same people that did Eternal Sunshine, three languages (English / French / Spanish).  I really liked it.

OK, I'll bite.

I'm listening right now to Hammock, Burial, Stars of the Lid, Monolake, Vladislav Delay – a mixture of ambient/dub techno, drone and dubstep. Anyone got any suggestions in a similar vein? I'm looking for tracks to complete a moody winter mix.

I don't know the genre that well at all but I got a 5 years of Hyperdub CD compilation recently and it's pretty good.

Yeah, I have that already. I'm particularly in love with the Kode9/Spaceape version of "Ghost Town" but the new Burial track is also good. Both tracks are in the pile of stuff I'm currently playing with.

You really wont like Annie Mac like tbh, I think that's a whole different meaning of the term 'mash-up'.

Righteo, I thought this might work as a thread.

Recently I've been hammering Girl Talk, Jaydiohead, E-603 and 2 Many DJs.  Mash-up stuff.  What other similar stuff would I like?

This won't just apply to music.  The idea is that you come in and say "I like Goodfellas, Scarface and Casino" and you might get recommended The Departed, City of God, etc.  You get the idea and you know what I mean.

Go.

The Hood Internet for the mash up stuff. Not as good as Feed the animals, but his stuff is worth a go if you like Mash ups:

Yeah I renamed this thread 'similarism' btw, because I think it might be quite useful at some point and this will make it easier for me to find it.

For example: earlier on I was thinking of saying I like hyphens, what else would I like (as an alternative to hyphens)?  Thankfully Cajun saved the day, but I think the only plausible answer would have been colons, you'll f***ing love colons.  Feel free to englighten me mind.

Also, the ellipsis has its detractors, but I for one think it's... under-appreciated.
