Is Panama known for its underground caves? If so I can see it as being some animal that got trapped underground hundreds of years ago, and has gradually evolved. although there are eye sockets there doesn't appear to be much in the way of eyes on it.

What happens if the creature was a space traveller and had crashed, was seriosuly injured and stayed the night in a cave.  Seen the children playing the next day and thought it would seek help.
