s*** still need to be marked spoilers in here tbh, given how not everybody (Clay and Mike and so on) haven't finished all the books.

Started Book 2 - slow to begin with, but once the 'Main Characters' I'm interested in appeared again, the pace picked back up.

Spoiler

Way more interested in what's happening beyond the Wall, compared to the political struggle over the Kingdom (which is still interesting). Not too bothered about the Dragons at the moment, though was really starting like Drogo before his end.

Snow, Mormont and Jorah Mormont probably favourite characters at the moment.

My fav/hated characters: Spoiler
Loved reading about: Arya, Tyrion, Snow, Gendry and Jaime.

Hated reading about: Catelyn and Davos.

Spoiler
I love Davos.  His chapters aren't really about him though, they're all about Stannis and Melisandre.

Beric Dondarrion is the man.

I suggest we use a system of saying "Book 1", "Book 3" and so on above an spoiler tag so everybody knows what book is discussed underneath the spoiler?

Book 2
Spoiler
I can't stand Stannis and Mellisandre after what they did to my favourite for the throne, Renly. :(

Kaz... your fav ... (book 2 reference) Spoiler
for the throne was Renly? Strange choice. I recognise that they made him pretty lame in the TV show, but still. It was clear that he was all style and no substance in the book. An opportunist to boot. He pretty much lets Ned hang high and dry and he doesn't really show a lot of loyalty toward anyone (except the obvious) and yet they love him anyway. I hated him.

Book 1
Fav characters: Arya, Tyrion and Jon Snow in that order

Least fav: Sansa

Book 2

Spoiler
Fav: Arya, Tyrion, Snow
Least: Stannis (what a t***), Mellisandre

I thought Davos Seaworth was okay.

Have you guys read Book 3 yet? wow. wow.... I thought he was getting a bit of a soft touch... due mainly to the way Spoiler
he treated Sansa and let her keep her virginity. After missing gang rape in the King's landing riot and then missing rape again with Tyrion, I thought: "Okay he lacks the courage to actually have the make sacrifices and feel real pain"...
...but then... Spoiler
he kills off Catelyn and Robb in quick succession and levels Winterfell to the ground... f*** me. And then killing Joffrey that was awesome.

Not my favourite character by a long shot, but my favourite choice for the throne out if the self-styled kings in book two, aye.

Spoiler
fav pov characters; Snow, Arya, Tyrion (obviously) and going to 2nd the Davos call, while Stannis certainly isn't the nicest of guys he's certainly interesting to read about as is Melisandre.

Didn't like reading Theons chaps while Sansa's started dull but grew to like them as the books went on mostly due to The Hound (possibly my favourite character full stop), never minded Caetlyn even though everyone else I know who's read the books hated her

As for Renly, probably was my favourite for the throne too

For those of you who have finished book 4...
Spoiler
Any theories on what happened to Pate? Has he been replaced by a Faceless Man/Assassin? Is Arya studying to become a FM/Assassin? Anyoen else think the Westerlings are decendents of Maddy the Frog? Seems an obvious gimme but I was proud that I figured that out on my own.

Catelyn is a beeeeotch full stop. She has no reason to be as lame as she is towards Jon and have you finished Book 4? I can't see how you could like her after that.
Also Sansa actually became one of my favourite characters in the fourth book after I hated her the most in Book one. Odd but true. Spoiler

Without much evidence to go on for Pate but yes it seems he has, to what end lord knows, and yes she is or at least picking up some of their tricks but doesn't seem willing to go the whole way and utterly abandon who she is. And hadn't thought about that in the slightest tbh

Spoiler
come on take mercy on her, in book 4, not only has she (to her knowledge) had her husband and all her sons killed including her eldest in front of her and her daughters in who knows hands, had her home burnt to the ground to her knoweledge by a boy who she helped raise for 10 years but to top it off she got killed herself and is now back to life but unable to speak, I think she's entitled to be a bit p*ssed off at the world in general

Book 4 stuff
Spoiler
Jamie doesn't like the Westerlings despite the fact that they basically caused Robb's downfall because some old Magi from across the narrow sea and a bunch of merchants wed into the family. Low borne scum and all that. The old crazy gran magi has to be the same one that fortold Cersei's future... I would guess anyway.

And since you read book 4 I was referring to the way Catelyn decides to hang Brienne anyway... she was a narrow minded bitch in life and even more so in death. I never liked her. Jon Snow is the litmus test here... the characters that don't like him are basically c***s - Theon Greyjoy, Catelyn and Alliser Thorne. Those that do like him Tyrion, Ned and the sibs bar Sansa are cool.

Book 4 heated argument and name calling please don't look...
Spoiler
I see your argument and it is a sound one, however taking it out on Brienne was uncalled for. Even an undead Zombie could see what she was all about. Catelyn is just a terrible judge of character. She compounds her mistakes by acting even more impulsively. She is just as bad as Cersei on that front.

book 4 crap

Spoiler
well we don't know that she did hang her, don't think Brienne is finished yet, think the last words in her chapter saying she said one word or something like that and that could have saved her. Also consider here, for the reasons I outlined above, she's been through a lot and viewed her as a traitor because she doesn't have her daughters, sure it may not be logical but neither is being "alive" in her condition. As for her treatment of Jon, her husbands b****** son (or so Ned claimed) produced after their marriage being paraded as his son quite openly and to make it worse looks more like him than any of her legitimate children, she's hardly going to treat him with hugs and kisses, hes an open advertisement of her husbands unfaithfulness and of a woman he refused to speak about who she thought he loved. Understandable she's be cold to him

Book Two and Three theories about TV Show mild spoilers so you could read them and not be totally ruined...
Spoiler
If done correctly the actor that plays Tyrion should win an Emmy. Not only is he a great actor, but he has some factistic material to work with in these books. Including a fantastic speech/monologue in each book.

Big spoiler Book 2
Spoiler
Tyrion's speech to the troops when he charges out of the gate... that should be eipc!!!
Big spoiler book 3
Spoiler
Tyrion's speech at the trial... "I am a monster which is what you want me to be because of who I am..." That was power stuff. I loved it.

book 4 and other unpleasant stuff

Spoiler
hey hey hey lets not go overboard here, no ones as bad as Cersei on that front, she doesn't even have the excuse of being undead and what effect that has on a person.

which is another thing, being reanimated had bad degenerative effects on Beric and that was with a relativly quick revival, Caetlyn was dead for quite some time before being brought back, so much so Thoros didn't think it a good idea, who knows what kind of effect it's had on her thinking

Okay a book one issue that doesn't need to be spoilered. I just had a glance at the "westeros" forum and there was a long standing debate that seemed pretty darn cool.

Rhaegar + Lyanna = Jon Snow?

Think about it... it actually makes a lot of sense.

Book one only stuff...
Ned is protective about Jon and won't tell anyone about his mother (including Jon). He left for less than a year and comes back with a son... seems pretty out of character for Ned right? Ned resigns as Hand over Robert's desire/need to blindly hunt down and kill all Targayian children. "She's just a girl Robert, Let it go!" Lyanna was supposedly kidnapped and abused by Rhaegar. Robert says it was rape... but was it? Maybe Lyanna actually loved him and eloped willingly. And even if it was rape who is to say there wasn't enough time for Lyanna to have a child. And we already know that the Lannisters and the Targaryians only stay blond because they are into incest :fishing: and when confronted with dark haired genes they have dark hair so we have Jon.

Did anyone think of this on their own. I certainly didn't.
