Yeah, it always makes me sad to hear that Joe McOldy has had to pawn his Super Bowl ring because he has no money/can't afford health care. Could be he wasted it all, but its not as if they got paid even half as much as what the guys are earning now. Those guys paved the way for the current NFL Stars, so they should be looked after a little bit better.

Tiki Barber is also making a comeback. Always found it amusing that he retired and the Giants won the Superbowl the next season

The Ewing theory. When a superstar who's actually s*** leaves the team, the team gets better.

Named after, ironically (or not, considering this is mike we're talking about), mikes favourite player: Patrick Ewing.

Knicks were never better without Ewing. Simmons is a c***.

What about the time we made the finals without him?

People don't sympathise enough with athletes generally, imo. In all sports, the vast majority of their careers are short, the vast majority come in as naive kids from poor backgrounds and little money sense, and the vast majority will have their careers/lives negatively affected by injuries. It is a rough source of employment, and by no  means a steady flow of income.

What about the time we made the finals without him?

Lost him in the conf finals. Made it to the finals on fumes, inspiration and hatred of the Pacers.

Even Baba is a Simmons fan

Although I agree. Ewing was just unlucky to have his prime in the MJ era. The Eastern Conference the year the Knicks made the finals was relatively weak, and it was a lockout year as well. Anyway, I don't want to discredit that year too much because JvG is my man.

Horseshit. We were 8 because the season was short. We were better than the majority of the teams above us. Give us a healthy Pat and we take the Spurs.

Take MJ away from the league, and we win at least two in that decade.

I only feel this way about NFL players for some reason.

Same here.

The other sports aren't as physical and I'm sure the average career and earnings are far lower in the NFL for the lower-tier players than if you compared it to other sports.

Footballers can often go 10+ years and make a decent living (£500+/week is nearly £30k/year) playing in the lower leagues, and there are many lower leagues and many other countries where they can play football. If you make a go for the NFL and fail, you're pretty much done. Basketball also has a worldwide appeal which means Americans can move to Europe, South America and Asia (even Southeast Asia has its own cross-country basketball league).

There's also the long-term effects of continued physical abuse which you suffer from playing in the NFL. No other sport has as devastating a long-term effect as the NFL; concussions, brain damage, speech impairment etc. are all pretty much common for ex-NFL players. I'm sure the most that athletes who play other sports go through might be some chronic back problems, no cartilage in the knees etc.

Although some might have serious issues, they're mostly physical issues that can be rehabilitated and/or would not significantly affect a person living a normal working life. The s*** that NFL players end up with makes the whole adventure not worth it, imo.

Colin Kaepernick (our 2nd Round QB) didn't even bother going. Stayed in SF for the next 'Camp Alex', workouts led for the team led by Alex Smith. Can't believe he's going to be our starting QB, again.

 LAD
They keep saying their strategy will take several years to implement, I accept this and realise that in the future we may be able to hold onto players much easier if we manage to achieve success without burning cash to get there. There's next to no point in overspending until you're in the s*** to get to Europe, only to fall out of it for several years and potentially enter relegation battles. Be frugal, spend the money wisely but at all times keep a core of good players in the side and try the utmost to create a core which is reasonably stable for three-four years.

I fully expect to get slayed and slated here for being a w***** apologist and maybe I'm wrong, maybe all they care about is lining their pockets and f***ing us over but you can argue it both ways. The haters have a more aggressive way of talking about it but we'll not know who's right until MA's ownership comes to an end.
