What are tubescreamers like? Are they worth it? I was thinking of getting one as a kind of a boost for solos. My RAT will be my main distortion and then the TS9 would be used for solos and s***.

It all ends here.

sick.

the one i use has the robert keeley 'baked' mod installed. it has more gain and lower mids - basically giving you a much more punchy and smooth boost. i mainly use it for tightening my rhythm tone.

shelling out the extra 50 quid or so for mr. keeley's modified pedals is well worth it.

Are you planning on using a scratchplate? Would be a shame to cover up her arse with it.

Ah, it doesn't spoil it at all! I don't know why I thought it would cover more of the lass. Class.

helps hide all the soldering and whatnot too. i toyed with the idea of a transparent scratchplate to show off more of the paint work but i think the black will probably look better
just need to decide whether it should be white pickups/controls or black ones. probably black i think...

Just took six strings off my 12 string to see how it sounds.  It sounds great, and the wide neck gives me the easier picking of a classical guitar with the easier playing of steel strings.  Just trying to think of any reason why I shouldn't have done it (other than the fact that the over-long headstock looks a bit weird).  I can't think of anything that'll go horribly wrong - obviously the tension on the neck is now reduced; not by much, because it's the treble strings that are off, but it'll still be significant.  Anybody think of a reason why this will hurt my lovely guitar..?  Can't abide the thought of f***ing about with a truss rod >_<

Video of it in action playing Barrios' 'Julia Florida' is here...

...for those of you who are in the mood for a bit of hesitantly-played slow paced Paraguayan action, recorded on a phone :)

Can't imagine it'd make much diff on the neck, tbh. It's probably equivalent to changing to a thinner gauge, I guess. I've had an old 6-string string 'Nashville'-tuned--12-string octave strings (kinda the opposite of what you've done) replacing the regular set--for about three years and nowt's happened.

That was the other thing I was considering, aye.. Davey Graham used to play fingerstyle like that, sounded like a harp or a dulcimer.  I suppose you've done the same sort of thing; taking off the lower strings must result in considerably less pull on the neck.  Do you ever play it?

Aye, quite a bit, tbh. And obviously, if you're recording and don't have a 12-string it's great.

Looking to find a way to connect a Shure SM-57 mic to my PC.

Being an acoustic player, I never understood impedence and line levels and that sort of s****.. what I get when I try to just plug the microphone directly into the soundcard (or through a pocket pod which I hoped would act as a preamp), either through line in or microphone, isa very, very quiet signal which is 90% hiss when boosted to a reasonable level. It's not a great sound card, so I'm probably looking for a USB solution.  Latency isn't an issue because I play solo acoustic; I just need a decent recorded sound.

Any ideas what I'd need..?  Some kind of USB preamp, I'm guessing, but I have no idea really >_<  Far as I'm aware, the SM-57 should be more than capable of recording an acoustic guitar.

You gwan need a mixer or a preamp or a soundcard with built-in preamp.

Cheers, I suspected as much..

Any preamp?  Are there different kinds?  Would this sort of thing be what I was after?  Up to 48dB of clean gain sounds like what I need.. and it also looks, helpfully, like I could plug the mic straight into that XLR hole on the front of it.

Aye, anything'll work. Depends how much you want to spend etc. etc. etc. If your souncard's s***, maybe you ought to consider a combo preamp/interface jobby like what m-audio do.

You might want to try the Tweakheadz Labs site http://tweakheadz.com/index.html. It has a lot of good free info re: home recording.

Yer man in Vampire Weekend is playing a (relatively) new Sheraton. Looks like everything is stock on it. Sounds pretty good actually, so much for people saying nobody would go on stage with a stock epiphone

Been trying to sell my guitar over craigslist for the past two weeks to no avail.  Has anyone done this before and have any advice?  I'm effectively selling the guitar for $200 less than you could buy it for in the store and still no bites (other than people who want to trade or scammers).

Found a DVD with a folder full of stuff I recorded over the years, some of that stuff is really bad. Not that any of it is good, just its pretty bad in that I can totally tell what I had been listening to at the time. There's a lot of really bad Nirvana-esque stuff.
