Recommend a... 'Portable Media Player'
« on: Tuesday 16 June 2009, 03:21:03 PM »
Having smashed my Creative Zen Vision M, I'm in need of another and was wondering what the present state of play is.

Last time I checked, Apple still under-performs and over-charges, while having done some reading on Archos, it sounds like they're losing the good reputation they were gaining.

The main thing I'm interested in is audio quality, followed by file compatibility (inc. videos) and portability. I'll need at least 16gb or so storage. The cheaper the better, of course...

Any thoughts?

I'd say the headphones were far more important for quality than the player. Creative Zen with 20 quid headphones is a different planet to an ipod with Bose cans.

Zen's are meant to be the best as far as i'm aware, the iPod classic support apple's lossless format if thats any help.,h

Ive had a Creative Zen Microphoto for 3 years, and have had no reason to change it. It's probably the most reliable and sturdy thing Ive ever owned. Touch wood.

Sony series stuff is very good at a very good price, if you want it for videos the screen size is not exactly massive, but for music the sound quality is amazing, even the head phones they come with are worth 40 quid on there own.

I have the sony NWZ-S639F model, but they have varius different models in this range offering different functions just find one that suits you.  :clap2:

Archos 5/7

http://www.archos.com/

Tried and tested.  Can get price-y though, what with the separate accessories etc.  Probably the more extravagant option mind you.

It takes a wise man to learn from his mistakes, but an even wiser man to learn from others.
This is what should be done. By one who is skilled in goodness, and who knows the path of peace: Let them be able and upright, straightforward and gentle in speech. Humble and not conceited, contented and easily satisfied. Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways. Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful, not proud and demanding in nature. Let them not do the slightest thing that the wise would later reprove.

double thread highjack... need to replace mine too. Just need a basic thing along the lines of either:

Archos 2
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Archos-8GB-MP3-Player-Radio/dp/B001UE6LWG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247669605&sr=8-1

or Samsung YP Q1
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-YP-Q1JEB-XEU-Multimedia-iPlayer/dp/B001JAH0B2/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247669626&sr=8-8

Them 2 any good? Or is there one that beats them both?
Saw him in Primark with Neil Warnock earlier today

'Brah' ? This isnt a bodybuilding forum ;)

Surely the player is about functionality rather than its 'sound' capabilities, since the quality of headphones makes more of a difference?

f*** apple, get something decent, like this -> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Walkman-NWZX1060B-32GB-MP4-Player/dp/B001RTS5UK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247675301&sr=8-1

It has the BEST sound quality according to reviews

One thing that we can't possibly praise highly enough is the audio quality. We tested this player with a range of earbuds -- from the stock ones bundled with an iPod to a set of Westone UM1s -- and we were simply blown away with the dynamics. Hands down, this is the best sounding PMP that we've had the pleasure of using, and sticklers for good sound will definitely be impressed.

Also sony are cool as f***, and you don't need to use Itunes to put stuff on it, simply plug it in, drag and drop from windows, though you can sync with WMP if you want.

Also head to head X series vs Touch http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/UAN/2995/v/3/sp/ :nile:

As a gadget, the iPod Touch is clearly ahead, but when it comes to sheer quality of sound and vision the Sony X-series Walkman just about takes the prize.

But only just. And while we've given the Walkman the prize based on the key elements of superior sound and video quality, in truth it's not good enough to completely blow the iPod Touch out of the water, and the Touch's additional abilities and ease of use give it the edge in terms of value for money. Sony will need to keep innovating to keep ahead in this game.

He wants the best quality media player, thus the sony. If he values apps and games then get an I pod. Its hardly a stuck record when dave says get a touch as he has it and likes it, when I have that and like it. Also I heard apple kill babies in China.
