NUFC Statement - Alan Shearer

NEWCASTLE United can confirm that Alan Shearer will return to the Club as manager for the final eight games of the season.

The Magpies' all-time record goalscorer takes charge of first team affairs at St. James' Park with immediate effect. Iain Dowie will assist Alan, with Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood continuing in their coaching roles.

The Club have made the appointments while Joe Kinnear continues to recover at home having recently underwent heart surgery.

Managing Director Derek Llambias said: "Everyone at Newcastle United is absolutely delighted that Alan has taken on this challenge.

"Already there is a buzz around the Club and the city. The news has given everyone a massive boost."

Alan will hold his first training session with the squad on Thursday morning before addressing the media at St. James' Park later in the afternoon.

The Club will not be opening the stadium to the public on Thursday.

However, Alan and the squad will stage an 'open' training session for all fans to attend at St. James' Park next Tuesday. More details on this event will follow.

I asked for a Sprite in my local Conservative club.

I was given a small green vegetable.

Fail. Not April 1st yet.

Exactly. That's why they wouldn't announce it if it wasn't true.

If the club actually announced Shearer as a manager on April 1st and then saying it was a joke the day after, I'd kill myself, honest to god

Has to be a p*ss take. Can't see why Shearer would come now (of all times) and also, why would he work under Mike Ashley?

Could be the build-up to the worst ever April 1st joke though.

What a cruel joke on Newcastle fans when we're already down and out on the ground..
"We make you feel good about yourself. “Oh well,” you will say when you glance around your settled squad of players, your suited and booted chairman who drinks orange juice in the stand and your manager who has been in charge for three years. “It may all be quite sensible and a bit mid-table here, but at least we are not Newcastle.” It is nice to make people feel good about themselves." (Gabby Logan, 05/09/2008)

It can't be a joke, surely? Even the few people left backing Ashley would give up.

A desperate move by the club, if it turns out to be true. Just wonder why the hell Shearer would agree to come in - now of all times?
