Dubai to get moving skyscraper
« on: Wednesday 25 June 2008, 01:36:03 PM »
From the BBC:
Quote
Dubai to get 'moving' skyscraper

Construction of the world's first moving building, a 80-storey tower with revolving floors which give it an ever-shifting shape, is due to begin.

The Dynamic Tower, which will be built in Dubai, will feature 80 pre-fabricated apartments, spinning independently of one another.

"It's the first building that rotates, moves, and changes shape," said David Fisher, the tower's architect.

"This building never looks the same, not once in a lifetime," he added.

The innovative, 420-metre (1,378-foot) building's apartments would spin a full 360 degrees, at voice command, around a central column by means of 79 giant power-generating wind turbines located between each floor

Not sure about the claim that it will never look the same, perhaps the machinery would wear out before it got back to same positions. But unless they floors themselves change shape (?) it would have to re-align at some point, even if 1,000's of years in the future.

I watched a program about this last night on BBC news i think it was, apparently the only people to sign up for one so far are Moscow, Dubai are considering it, within every moving level theres wind turbines, which provides all of the buildings energys, its cheap to make and can be made off site and put together on site, minimising building costs and the problems caused by building work going on. Also there is a lift for the wealthy penthouse owners to get there cars from ground floor, say to floor 80 where their penthouse is located!
Sounds interesting, and how the architect was saying it, i think they may be popping up in every city for the value of them, it being eco-friendly etc

a) To wash it
b) Park it in their 80th floor garage
c) Commit the most dramatic suicide attempt ever known.
They keep saying their strategy will take several years to implement, I accept this and realise that in the future we may be able to hold onto players much easier if we manage to achieve success without burning cash to get there. There's next to no point in overspending until you're in the s*** to get to Europe, only to fall out of it for several years and potentially enter relegation battles. Be frugal, spend the money wisely but at all times keep a core of good players in the side and try the utmost to create a core which is reasonably stable for three-four years.

I fully expect to get slayed and slated here for being a w***** apologist and maybe I'm wrong, maybe all they care about is lining their pockets and f***ing us over but you can argue it both ways. The haters have a more aggressive way of talking about it but we'll not know who's right until MA's ownership comes to an end.

Dubai is full of empty buildings.
"I'm a competitor and I want to play every game, every minute. The manager knows what I'm thinking. He knows I want to play. He makes his choices and I have to respect them."But it's true we don't share quite the same philosophy. For him, it's more crosses, a bit of a more direct style, whereas I'm more the kind of player who likes to play short passes.

I don't know why altitude would make carbon monoxide poisoning more dramatic. It's all just sitting about and going to sleep, at the end of the day.

How would it hold up in an earthquake?

Earthquakes in the persian gulf?

Same odds as a Volcano eruption in Newcastle..

No idea about where the earthquake hotspots or whatever relevant plates are located on the globe, just thinking in terms of the concept itself and how it would withstand an earthquake. I remember a few years ago the theory being proposed that a less rigid structure, one that could move with the vibrations/shock, would be the ideal building for that scenario.

"I took the decision to resign in September 2008 only after very careful and anxious consideration. The decision to resign was one of the most difficult decisions that I have ever had to take in my life. I believe that anybody who knows me and my attachment to Newcastle United and the North East in general will understand how difficult this must have been. I very much hope that the decision of the Tribunal now confirms why I felt that I had no option but to resign from the position as Manager of the Club that I love."- Kevin Keegan speaking on 02/10/2009

less earthquakes on teh south side of the Gulf than on teh northern (iranian) side but they do occur more often than around here - there hasn't been much there to damage until teh last 30 years TBH

Surely this is just a rotating building not a moving one .
