DVD/CD burning issues
« on: Sunday 9 September 2007, 01:32:36 AM »
For a while my DVD burner has refused to play or burn CDs, if I put one in it just sits there making a clicking noise and does f*** all else. It's fine with DVDs though, will play and burn them, no probs. I tried updating the driver, didn't work. I tried flashing the firmware, didn't work. So I got a CD burner and put that in as well and used that for CDs and the original for DVDs. Now that's not working either!! It'll play CDs, but won't burn them, when I go to burn something nero gives me an error message saying: "Invailid field in command J: LG CD-RW CED-8080B". Not only that, but when it's ripping something, the PC slows right down and the modem stops working and says that there's something wrong with my USB. In fact there is something wrong with the USB ports, they don't f***ing work, they're completely dead, had to restart my pc to get back online.

It's really f***ing me off, has anyone got the slightest clue what this stupid f***ing machine is doing and will punching it repeatedly solve the issue?

Thanks, but I tried updating the firmware for the dvd and that didn't solve the problem, I've downloaded this one and I'll flash it and see what happens anyway, but according to nero info-tool I'm already on 1.06, so unless it's corrupted I'm not sure if it'll solve the problem.

Cheers for the reply though, I'll let you know if it works.

Haha, Indi's computer just such a f***ing shambles.

If possible, put the drive in another computer and see if it works. If it does: software issue. If it doesn't: hardware issue.

Have you lost  D.m.a to your drive ? Have a look under ide/atapi controllers in device manager and see if it has reverted to p.i.o mode.

Does it actually start burning ?

The whole shebang could be down to a power issue if you're losing power to your u.s.b when the computer is under load

Cheers.

One of them was on p.i.o. mode, so I've changed it to dma, hopefully that'll sort at least some of the problem out, I'll check tonight.

It could well be done to a power issue, there's quite a bit of stuff in there, but I've always had issues with my usb ports, I reckon my motherboard might just be a bit of a lemon, the line-out plug has stopped working so I have to plug my speakers into the headphone jack. Don't think I'll be buying Abit in the future.

It doesn't actually start burning, at least looking at the disk it doesn't look like it does.

Cheers for your help.

Amazes me people still get worked up over components that are nowadays so dirt-cheap. DVD burners cost from like £14.

Yeah, I 'spose, it's just pissing me off that I don't understand what's wrong with it and also that my cd burner has developed pretty much the same fault as my dvd burner, so is that a coincidence or not?

Nope. They both have the same user.

The one NEC do now. They've always been best, not that I keep up with DVD burner releases.

Yeah, that's what you say, but I've seen you waiting outside the newsagent for your copy of DVD Burner Weekly every Thursday!!

Seriously though, thanks.

The one that's knackered is an NEC though, won't do anything but play DVDs, won't burn them and won't even touch CDs, little bit wary of getting another now. Anyone else any good or should I stick to NEC? Which one is their new one, by the way?

Cheers.

Have you checked the connections? The IDE cable fell out of one of my drives and it acted funny.

Yeah.

I had the CD as a slave of the DVD so I thought that might be affecting it and I bought a new IDE cable and plugged the CD into IDE3 on my motherboard and left the DVD in IDE2, all that did was make the CD disappear completely, so I switched them over and now they're both accessible, but the same old problem exists (ie DVD will play DVDs, but won't touch CDs and won't burn DVDs & CD will play CDs, but won't burn them). It's proper annoying.

I have a CD-RW that has previously had data files on it. I have deleted all files and formatted it.
iTunes and Windows Media Player both tell me to 'Insert a Blank Disc' when I try to burn tracks to it.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I have to do, bar using a completely brand new CD-RW (which in that case, is it going to give me the same problem if I try to burn new tracks to it at a later date?)

edit : Hmmm. Reading that CD-RW's might not be readable on standard Hi-Fi's and can only be ready on computers
