"A serial rail fare dodger was caught sitting down to a meal in a first class carriage, sipping a glass of whisky and wearing a stolen guard's uniform, a court was told."

Got to admire him really.

try losing a yearly season ticket - they ask you for an "interview" with revenue protection to check you are who you say you are and that you haven't flogged it on

I'd like that to be the case, but is it really possible?  And if so, they're free, what condition would they actually be in...

What he is trying to say is that he puts on a suit when travelling on the train and never pays the fare.

Guess there's only one way to find out - voting Scottish Socialist's Party on 5th May and seeing how their plan for free public transport works out.

f***ed if I'm giving up my car though. >:(

Have you seen the state of public transport in Britain?  By state, I mean all things, sticking to timetables, general nick of the carriages etc.  Imagine the state of it when it's not being funded, at all, by paying passengers?  And THEN, what it'll be like when we have all the normal car drivers on the buses with me?  Pfft, I'd rather jump off a cliff.

Regardless, though, they're not free, so I don't see how Parky's post proves that a TOTALLY free public transport system in the UK would work.  Something probably flew over my head, mind.

Because it's properly funded and run.
Case in point I went on the underground in London in Feb for about 3 stops for £3. Here for €5 I could travel all day in Hamburg on the bus and underground. blueyes.gif

Bluf,
When I say free I'm being provocative. But yes fares in Germany are about 30/40% cheaper and the trains are exceptional.

Nah, rhetorical. Am reading all the reports on the election and time after time i read lazy left wing journalists going on about the super public transport infrastructure and how it puts ours to shame. What they fail to understand is that that infrastructure is due to investment streams from the government that will take France's public debt to 100% of its GDP within 7 years (source BNP Paribas). The daft mugs.

Ah, got you.

I've got to say, I agree with you, even if you were just trying to provoke a debate.  "Public" transport should always be free, but I wouldn't begin to pretend I knew how it could possibly ever be, now.

Bluf,

"The Scotrail franchise is due for renewal in 2011. As representatives of the rail unions pointed at the recent Scottish Labour conference, Scotrail could be brought back into the public sector at zero cost. The Scottish Executive already subsidises Scotrail to the tune of £200 million a year, even although the franchise is now a profitable concern."  :parky:
