Green Mile, Beautiful Mind and The Matrix (1) just because it makes you think about the possibilities of life and how intriguing it truly is :)

Just watched The Station Agent. Thought it was absolutely excellent, a great character based movie with interesting likable characters. It's about a dwarf, a guy who works at a hot-dog van and a woman who's dealing with the death of her son. Good watch.

Yes it made me think "it's possible, nay likely that in 'real life' I'm a kung fu kicking badass mo fo who will save the 'real world' from an evil computer virus".

I'm being facetious of course; I see what you're saying.  Makes you wonder.

The best films I've seen recently were Casablanca, Doctor Zhivago and Crash.  Everyone knows about the first 2 but if you haven't seen Crash then I'd recommend it.  It makes a lot of obvious points about racism and then pulls you're pre-conceptions out from under you.  No-one is blamed or marginalised.  We're all people struggling through life and making the best of it that we can.  Stunned me.

I saw crash and thought it was absolute trousers. Seriously. I like my films and I was really looking forward to seeing it, then really disappointed by it.

was disappointed you meant the new one then, the old one is a comedy classic up their with Airplane and The Naked Gun  bluebiggrin.gif I'm getting Doctor Zhivago soon, was mainly attracted to it by the fact Klaus Kinski is in it, what an actor/f***ing nutter he was, some truly great performances he's done

Klaus Kinski is hardly in it, but he's good.  Rod Steiger steals the show though.  One of the least recognised actors but should be held in as high regard as Pacino, De Niro, Brando etc.

Crash isn't particularly original in it's direction, and could be construed as 'soppy', but it pulled on my heart strings like nowt before.  When the lass jumps up to protect her dad I was inconsolable and overjoyed.  Great stuff man.

Ah Rod Steiger. I have only seen him in Giu La Testa as of yet, but he was amazing in that.

Ok how about this for an idea, I'm going to run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it (10 points for the first person to tell me where that line comes from, this isn't the idea by the way, although.... hmmmm, I suppose it could be a kind of secondary idea, maybe.....)

Anyway, my original idea was an "if you like that, you'll like this" type thing where people can say something they've enjoyed and other people can suggest things that they might like based upon what they've said.

Ok, I'll start.

As some of you already know, I'm well into my Darren Aronofsky, so does anyone know something I might like, considering I like Pi and Requiem For A Dream?

The first ones that come to mind:

Braveheart
Gladiator
American History X
The Shawshank Redemption
Man On Fire

There's so much more that I can's straightaway think of any  bluebiggrin.gif.

Euhm, also:

National Treasure
Troy
Se7en
Forrest Gump
Cast Away
The Pianist (absolutely brilliant piece of art)
The Lord of The Rings trilogy
Shrek 1 & 2
Titanic (yeah, I know  bluebiggrin.gif)
Mystic River
Dead Man Walking
The Green Mile
The Bourne Identity
In The Name Of The Father
The Last Samurai

For now this are about the better ones I can think of.

Good idea.  Unfortunately I'm not personally a fan of Aronofsky.  I enjoyed Pi, but requiem For a Dream didn't shock me or move me like it seems to other people.  It was stylish enough though.  I think the thing I dislike about him most is that he's going to remake Lone Wolf and Cub!!!  Why?

If you want a visually interesting drug film have you seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?  Personally I haven't but it's one I've heard great things about but just never gotten round to buying. (Best online price £7.99 here)

If it was the shock of the ending that did it for you, then the most shocking film I've seen was Irreversible.  Monica Bellucci stars in it.  And it's plain horrible.  You won't 'enjoy' it but should definately see it.  I've never looked at flippant film violence in the same way since. (Best online price £7.95 here)

Edit: Best prices added above and i forgot to say ask for my recommendations.

I really enjoyed The Right Stuff the other week.  But I'm not a big fan of Apollo 13.  Any suggestions?

I've seen Fear & Loathing, it is definately worth seeing, it's good, but not quite as good as some people say it is.

I'll look out for the other one, thanks.

What I was really after, now I've had a chance to think about it, is something similar to Pi. ie Independent, or off the beaten track, with an interesting central concept and well acted (is that too much to ask from a modern film?). Do you know anything like that?

It's been popularised since Star Wars came out, but I'd say THX 1138 will tick all your boxes (except modern).

Nicos, is there much of a difference between the original and the director's cut? If so, which is best?
