Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi (Unaltered Theatrical Edition). :)
Is that part of the blu-ray that was released? If not, where did you get it? Hate the digital effects that has been put on the old films, looks so out of place.

No its not on the BluRay. It was part of the box set released in 2008 I think as a bonus disc to the films. Most fans hate them, they're not anamorphic widescreen and they're transfers of the laser disc version (which I think were released in 1993). Most "fans" aren't happy with them though. They're good enough for me though. If I want to see the films I'll slide in the BluRays. If you have any more questions, for the LOVE OF GOD, put them in the Geektastic thread before someone (interpolic) kills us

It absolutely was not a good movie. I can let you get away with the fact that it looked good, but it was 2 hours of searing smugness. Woody Allen at his most smug and unfunny.

It's a movie you didn't like. Doesn't mean that to the general public, or in the opinion of others, it's a bad movie.

"In my opinion it was absolutely not a good movie." is a better phrasing.

"Three reasons for the best film nomination tbh. Firstly because it's a good movie."

Errrr hello? Should I smugly walk you through how you could have better phrased that? At least it's given me some insight into what attracted you to this film anyway.

I could've phrased myself better. But hindsight's a bitch this early in the AM. The meaning was that it's a well made movie that a lot of people will enjoy and have enjoyed, which makes it a "good movie" in the eyes of the general public, which in turn is what tends to have an effect on the Academy's decisions regarding nominations. In terms of the argument I was making, my post will now reflect badly on the points I've made/will make. Hopefully that can be looked past. Generally, movies nominated for an Academy Award in the category of "Best Movie" will be movies that aren't just aimed at commercial success, but also have a bit of an artsy side to them or movies that makes statements on the state of the world now, or the state of it in the past. These movies in general are double edged swords, as the people that love them will love them thoroughly whilst people that don't take to them in general will dislike them heavily. Of course there are exceptions, and these are usually the ones that end up with the Award at the end of the night. I don't think Midnight in Paris would've been nominated if it still only was five spots in the category, and I don't think it will win. But it will now be able to say it was "Nominated for an Academy Award" on the cover of its DVD, which is the main reason they expanded to ten nominees in the category anyways.

I'm nitpicking on phrasing and s*** though, I'm aware of that.  You just happened to poke my biggest pet peeve which is someone giving the absolute statement of "This X is s*** because I didn't like it. Conform to my opinion!" rather than

Nah. Gemmill doesn't like it, therefore is dog s***.

Though, I've gotta say, it's weird that imdb still works on ratings from the masses, rather than just Gemmill's opinion. And from what I've read in here, most of the top 100 are s***.

Midnight In Paris was a weird one for me, it's definitely as smug and pretentious as Gemmill's saying and I f***ing hate Owen Wilson, but I did find it watchable nonetheless.

I love Larry David but Whatever Works is like Midnight In Paris without any of the positives, absolutely f***ing tedious garbage.

At least there was a sort of point to Midnight In Paris, a concept that wasn't quite novel but not recently explored in many films.

Whatever Works was just painful, couldn't wait until it was finished from about minute 1.  Felt embarrassed to have suggested watching it.

Spoiler
1. Predator (1987)
Its aged well, even if it is a corny 80's action movie. I was surprised to read recently that Jean Claude Van Damme made his acting debut as The Predator in this movie, but only for 2 scenes. Both when the Predator was stealth and jumping around the jungle.

2. Predator 2 (1990)
Cheesy. Camp and Danny Glover. Who cares though. There's a decent idea within this film, shame the execution is so poor. It does allow however for a good trivia question - Who are the only 2 actors to have been killed by an Alien, Predator and a Terminator?

3. Predators (2010)
Didn't like it on first viewing when it was released. However, on second viewing when I no longer care about what it should/could have been its decent and fits somewhat within the Predator storyline. Not too sure about the whole collecting 'bad people' to hunt part though.

4. AVP: Alien v Predator (2004)
I tell people I don't like it, but I keep watching it... action cuts were too fast for my liking.

5. Jurassic Park (1993)
Classic. Amazing that it still looks 'modern' nearly 20 years on.

6. One Day (2011)
Watched it with the wife. She hated it (she's recently read the book). I was bored. Do not watch.

7 AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
Very dark. First time I've seen it and somewhat disappointed. Nice touch with the classic 'sounds', shame its just... odd.

8 Boyz n the Hood (1991)
Not what I was expecting at all. A good character developing story (even if the ending seemed a little rushed). Watched this mainly for the references in GTA: SA... enjoyed it, however.

9 Black Dynamite (2009)
Unreal. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Its a spoof based on a the blaxploitation movies of the 60s - namely 'Shaft'. The one liners are fantastic, the 'bad' editing is great.

10 Conan the Barbarian (1982)
I forgot how bad this was. I spent most of the film laughing at how cheesy everything was.

11 Friday (1995)
Perhaps its because I was never a stoner, but I just didn't get this or find it half as funny as my mates suggested it would be. Though that was 10 years ago... and they were stoners.

12 Conan the Destroyer (1984)
Worse than the first film! Wilt Chamblerin is the only saving grace.

13 Batman (1989)
This used to be my favourite Batman movie, however that's changed since Christopher Nolan decided to make 2 great films. I'm not sure why, but the cartoonish/Tim Burton style limits it for me. Still an OK film (amazing 80s soundtrack from Prince), but its just not the same.

14 14 Patton (1970)
The monologue at the start hooked me. I had no idea it was a 3 hour film, and it didn't really feel like it. Great film.

15 Terminator (1984)
Always imagine how amazing the special effects must have looked when this was released. This always feels 'fresher' to watch since I saw it after T2, and just feels like I haven't seen it as much.

16 The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
I never really liked this when I watched it the first few times, but its grown on me over the years. That stupid scene with the kid and the gymnastics... that can be forgiven for how good the visuals are of the Raptors in the Long Grass. Still - prefer the book.

17 Contagion (2011)
Interesting ideas throughout the movie, but none of them seem to progress beyond that. Basically a story about how a virus spreads with very little drama or 'events' in it. There are so many characters in it and so little time for each one that you don't care about them.

18 Commando (1985)
This has to be both the worst movie ever and at the same time the greatest movie to watch while drunk and with mates. The editing is crazy and at times feels like someone has strung together several action scenes from different Arnie movies into one. The acting is bad -- even for an Arnie movie. The soundtrack is basically steel drums on repeat for 60 minutes. Yet, despite all of that I enjoyed it! Its so bad.

Commando: The Musical (Arnold Schwarzenegger)

19 Planet of the Apes (1968)
Genuinely surprised at how well the make up holds up after all this time. Its not that bad of a story either.

20 Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
Bit disappointing after how impressed I was with the first one. The ending... seriously what the hell... its almost as abrupt and as bad as the ending to Quantum Leap, though I can forgive Quantum Leap as its class.

21 Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)
Hellraiser movies are the only horrors that freak me out. I have no idea why. Not really freak me out, but disturb me a little. The horror make up effects are class.

22 Alien (1979)
Classic. I can't understand why people who are aware of this movie haven't chosen to watch at least once. The soundtrack and direction tell the story in this movie, not the words spoken.

23 Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
Think I actually preferred this to 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes'. I had never realised that the story arch continued on as much as it did when I was younger. There's a whole time paradox thing going on.

24 Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
The whole racism/slavery subplot thing was a bit strange (the one black guy in the whole movie is sympathetic to the Apes' cause and frees Ceaser). However, it was interesting to see the story follow what was foretold in the previous movie. Makeup effects have increasingly become worse.

25 Jurassic Park III (2001)
Always boggles my mind that this film, which is nearly 10 years after the first one, seemingly has worse Dinosaurs and special effects. The entire film is substandard. I really have no idea what they intended to do with the 4th instalment, as this one always seems to be scrapping the barrel whenever I watch it.

26 Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
And so I finally come full circle on the Voyage through the Planet of the Apes marathon. I had to take a slight break and watching another film in between as, well... it needed one. Think I was tired by the end of this film, so its perhaps why I feel like its the worst one. Still, overall, all the films together were a lot better than I thought they would be. I've only ever seen the first one (and the TV series), so to finally cap the story off was worthwhile. 'Deeper' than I had appreciated.

27 Planet of the Apes (2001)
The more Tim Burton movies I watch, the more I start to dislike his style and presentation.

28 Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
Better than I was expecting. Wasn't too keen on the whole CGI Apes, but didn't care after a bit. Story was different enough and was still interesting, liked the modern 'slant'. Certainly worth a watch, however if you've seen the trailer you've basically seen the movie.

29 Dead Presidents (1995)
As the film developed I was confused and surprised. I thought it was going to be some Boyz 'n the Hood type deal, but it turned off in the other direction. Whereas the guy stayed in the hood, this guy left and joined the army. Felt like several films in one at one point.

30 Total Recall (1990)
Decent and keeps you 'guessing'. Had no idea Sharon Stone was in this, always thought that the 'wife' was familiar, but never realised it was Stone! Remember being blown away as a kid with the special effects (exploding woman's head). I'm not sure there's a late 80s early 90s borderline B-Movie that doesn't have Michael Ironside as the bad guy.

31 Juice (1992)
Basically its a movie about how Tupac ended Adebayor's DJ career. Well its not really Adebayor its Omar Eeps. Apparently its getting a remake, not sure why that's needed... other than the fact the camera work feels like it was done by someone on work experience from Newcastle College.

32 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
No idea why I watched this other than it being on a list of films I have never seen yet feels like I should have seen. Can imagine it was pretty mind blowing when it was released back in the 50's. Am I right, Mike? The Seal is the star of the show.

33 The Thing (1982)
Whenever I see a movie like this I wish I had seen it when it first came out. Must have been class to see the special effects back then. Take away the alien/monster/thing angle and it still makes a good story (keeps you guessing till the end). X-Files did an episode based on this and its one of my all time favourite X-Files episodes (early season 1 - Ice).

34 Escape from New York (1981)
Slightly underwhelmed. First time I've seen it, believe it or not, and I don't know... I watched it and didn't feel anything towards it, really. Felt very dated. Apparently its getting a reboot/remake.

35 The Fifth Element (1997)
Watched this when I was younger and thought it was class. Didn't really appreciate how attractive Milla Jovovich was at the time, do more so now. Yet, now I'm older I notice how... uncertain this film is. Does it want to be a Sci-Fi Adventure film? Is it a Sci-Fi Comedy/Parody film? I don't know. The art and set work is great, I really like the vision that's being sold, but the direction is just all over the place. Acting is so over the top, the set pieces are a bit dumb and slapstick. I mean comedy Sci-Fi can be done, but this is more Spaceballs rather than Starship Troopers... and it doesn't work with the themes and actors available. It makes even less sense when you realise who the director is (Luc Besson - Leon)

36 Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
Now this movie gets away with the quirky over the top cheesy bullshit. Is this the apex of intentionally cheesy 80's action movies? The more I see of John Carpenter movies the more I become a fan, he just seems to nail every genre he sets out to make a movie within - well I say that but I didn't really enjoy Escape from New York. Kim Cattrall was actually alreet in the 80s... compared to her being in her 80s, she sort of looks like Scarlett Johnasson...

37 Zatôichi monogatari (1962)
You know - this was alright! Went in unsure, but said I'd give it half an hour. I was sold within 10 minutes (basically after the gambling scene). Not sure what else to say. The guy just carriers himself so well. I can't explain why it works, but it just does. I think the fact you're not overloaded with sword play and skills adds to the mystery and desire to Ichi just let loose.

38 Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
Not too sure on this one. I watched it and thought it was OK, but I never felt like I could give it my full attention as it never really seemed to draw it. First time I've seen it and it fills so many pop culture gaps now that I have seen it. Probably won't ever want to watch it again, not that its terrible, just... no need.

39 The Shaolin Temple (1982)
The song at the start is class though the dubs kill this movie. Its class to actually see Jet Li do all of his moves without the aid of wires, not sure why he turned to the over the top wire dancing (though does seem to fit with him becoming more exposed in Hollywood). Bit surprised this film was from as late as 1982 as it looks much older.

40 James Bond: Thunderball (1965)
Started to watch all the James Bond films last year, so this is the continuation from it. Think this is about the point they pick up - the Bond Girls certainly seem a lot better. I've read a few of the books and they differ from the movies (books more bloody and racist!).

41 Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
So many quality movies from the 80's with Beverly Hills Cop being one of the best. Even if everything else was s*** the soundtrack alone makes this movie worthwhile (even if that stupid frog tried to ruin it). Thankfully it isn't a bad movie, its a good friday night popcorn flick to watch. Eddie Murphy makes this one of the best 'comedy' movies from the 80s. Reading the trivia posts on IMDb I shudder to think what this movie might have been if some of the other actors had taken the role.

42 A Fistful of Dollars (1964)
First time I've seen this, despite my 'liking' of Westerns. Was a bit taken back at first with the bad 'dubs' until I read that it was originally an Italian movie. Once that was out of the way I had no issues with it, its a really good movie. Soundtrack is decent, if a little loud in the mix.

43 The Spy Who Came In From The Cold (1965)
Good story with some decent acting. Not sure I can say much more than that, other than I enjoyed it. There's no action. There's no gadgets and it doesn't need them. I've always meant to get around to reading Le Carré books, but never took the plunge, watching this has turned the motivation on to actually buy one now. Can only imagine the storytelling in the books works even better.
